Letter from the CEO DID YOU KNOW?
The treadmill was invented in 1818 to grind corn through the labor of English prisoners. Unsurprisingly, the treadmill was quickly identified as a form of punishment in itself, with ground corn a mere incidental outcome. By 1842, half of Britain’s prisons featured treadmills where prisoners, including Oscar Wilde, would toil for six or more hours each day. Treadmills of this sort arrived in the US in 1822 but never took hold, and by 1827 the few that had been built were all but abandoned. In 1902, Britain outlawed treadmill use in prisons.
One hundred and forty years later, William Staub of New Jersey somehow convinced the nation that a former penal torture tool was something we all needed in our homes and recreation centers. His Pacemaster 600 ushered in the era of the treadmill as we know it today, when otherwise upstanding citizens will fight for their turns on the infernal machines. GVR owns 25 treadmills.
Pima County library card holders can check out “Culture Passes”. Each pass provides two free admissions to area attractions. Visit the Green Valley Joyner branch at 601 N. La Canada to inquire about tickets to the Amerind Museum in Dragoon, the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, Tucson Botanical Gardens, Tucson Museum of Art, and more.
One of the first things that drew me to GVR was the mission statement. In 2020 the mission statement read: To provide recreational, social, and leisure education opportunities that enhance the quality of our members' lives
It’s not so different now: To provide excellent facilities and services that create opportunities for recreation, social activities, and leisure education to enhance the quality of our members’ lives.
Soon after my arrival, I found another element of GVR to love: how involved, inspired, and committed the membership is. Green Valley Recreation exists because of grass roots efforts by tenacious people who shared a dream of a fun, fulfilling retirement. A lot has changed since the early 70s, but some things stay the same: enthusiastic, determined people make things happen.
This fact could not have been clearer at the recent kickoff event for the Glass Arts studio construction at Santa Rita Springs. The rooms were full of grinning, grateful people, many of whom had worked for years toward the day when they could count on having the space and tools they need to pursue their retirement dream.
The Glass Artists Club, currently working out of Abrego North, expects the new space to be operational this fall--in time for a new season of glass artists to arrive and for the usual seasonal activities at Abrego North to resume. Keep an eye open for a grand opening event in October or November.

FITNESS FLASH
BUILDING MUSCLE? SLIMMING DOWN? LOOK TO PROTEIN!
With egg prices coming back down, it may be a great time to return to this high protein, simple staple. Protein is a key dietary element for folks who are trying to build muscle or burn fat. Protein sticks with you longer, reducing between-meal snacking, and helps repair and build muscle tissue after a workout or therapy session. Most protein sources are easy on the post-meal blood sugar spikes, providing steady energy throughout the day. Eggs offer about 6.5 grams of protein and 65 calories each, and can be prepared in nearly endless ways.
For a quick bite before or after your workout, try egg bites—they are easy to prepare and freeze and are super versatile.

In April and May, GVR will run a trial program. Lee Smith, GVR’s Fitness Coordinator and certified trainer, will spend two hours each morning in three different fitness centers: Canoa Ranch, East Center and Las Campanas. Lee will be available to answer questions, help members with their form, and make suggestions as requested.
As well, GVR is now offering free fitness center orientations, a complimentary 30-minute personal training consultation, and personal training packages.
You will basically make mini frittatas using a muffin tin.
• Preheat the oven to 350°.
• Add chopped ingredients to your taste to an oiled muffin tin. Some popular ingredients include grated cheese, bacon, sausage, turkey, mushrooms, onions, bell peppers, spinach, broccoli, and tomatoes.
• For a twelve-cup tin, beat together eight eggs and 1/3 cup milk. Season with salt and pepper, then fill each cup nearly to the top. Bake for 15-18 minutes, cool for two minutes and enjoy! Freeze thoroughly-cooled egg cups on a baking sheet and store them in a zip lock for easy access to a few at a time.
