🧪 Glass containers have long been a staple in pharmaceutical packaging, ensuring the integrity, safety, and efficacy of drugs. Our colleagues Serena Panighello and Giovanna Pintori applied advanced glass surface analysis techniques such as dynamic secondary ion mass spectrometry (D-SIMS) and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), in tandem with more consolidated chemical functional methods for pharmaceutical products. The purpose of this work is to correlate chemical and physical properties to better assess common failure modes of pharmaceutical containers and thus to mitigate the potential impact on drug quality and patient safety.
