The image shows the residence times of small tracer particles ("bubbles") in a fluid flowing past a cylinder (dark blue disk); the colors indicate the time taken to exit the wake by a bubble placed at that point. The presence of red regions, corresponding to long residence times, demonstrates that bubbles can be permanently trapped in the wake.
