Appropriation, as a concept, stands for turning a thing into personal property. On the other hand, the notion of cultural appropriation stands for privatising the element of other cultures for personal use. Taking the element of other cultures, as well as, borrowing style, motif, story, and other artistic elements (e.g., language) for artistic representation are also acts of cultural appropriation. This article gives a reading of Tauquir Ahmedā€™s film, Haldaa (2017) from a viewpoint of cultural appropriation to show that his representation of Caį¹­gĆ£ia (ą¦šą¦¾ą¦Ÿą¦—ą¦¾ą¦ą¦‡ą¦Æą¦¼ą¦¾) language is a distorted version of the language of Chattogram district that ethically as well as aesthetically mis/represents it. This writing would consider Haldaa as a work of a cultural outsider to show that the mis/representation is a result of an unequal power politics of outsider/insider and representer/represented. This is a discursive analysis of the film because the dialogues are examined from a viewpoint that they are culturally constructed.

This writing, using Gilles Deleuze and FĆ©lix Guattariā€™s philosophical concepts of ā€œbeing a majoritarianā€ and ā€œbecoming a minoritarianā€ as tools, examines the character of Nora Helmer from Henrik Ibsenā€™s A Dollā€™s House (1879) to show the transformation in her approaches as a journey of an individual from ā€œbeing a majoritarianā€ to ā€œbecoming a minoritarianā€ to argue that, unlike Torvald Helmer, Nora has realised her doll-like condition, and subsequently begins her endless journey of a revolutionary--a ā€œbecoming-minoritarian.ā€
According to Deleuze and Guattari, the difference between the notions of majoritarianism and minoritarianism is not quantitative rather they are ideological. The concept of majoritarianism represents the system, the standard of a system, and the constantness of a system. On the contrary, the notion of minoritarianism represents all the subsystems that challenge the system, the standard of a system, and the constantness of a system. This critical discourse analysis of Ibsenā€™s A Dollā€™s House, with reference to the concepts of ā€œbeing a majoritarianā€ and ā€œbecoming a minoritarian,ā€ examines the characters of Nora and Torvald to show the contrast between them as individuals where Nora begins the journey as a doll, a majoritarian, and gradually transforms herself to ā€œbecoming a minoritarianā€ but Torvald remains a doll--a majoritarian.

Binary and non-binary people are frequently characterised by their external genitals as well as their gender performances. Arguably, these categorisations don't help to understand some of the female characters (i.e., Rehana, Mimi, Annie, and the principal) of Abdullah Mohammad Saad's film, Rehana Maryam Noor (2021), because their activities, in my opinion, can't simply be interpreted from a biologically characterised viewpoint. This writing tries to appreciate the above-mentioned female characters from the majoritarian and minoritarian viewpoints developed by Gilles Deleuze and FĆ©lix Guattari, in their seminal work, A Thousand Plateaus: Capitalism and Schizophrenia (1980 in French). Deleuze and Guattari try to categorise gender roles from a political viewpoint that is quite opposite to the biologically characterised gender role.

In the film, Emma tries to explain ā€œExistence Precedes Essence,ā€ a Sartrean existential concept, to AdĆØle. Later, AdĆØle, after making love to Emma, humourously says: ā€œOrgasm Precedes Essence.ā€ Does the title have anything to with this writing? Probably not. But it sounds as significant as the other one: ā€œExistence Precedes Essence.ā€ In this writing, ā€œExistenceā€ precedes ā€œOrgasm,ā€ and, for sure, in another one ā€œOrgasmā€ will precede everything.

Meaning is a political bargain. Probably there is nothing natural about the process of producing meaning because meaning is a naturalised system used for the act of naturalising something. For instance, the ongoing bargain between the right to abortion and bans on the right to abortion could be an example of naturalising a new meaning (Dobbs v. Jackson) by rejecting another formerly naturalised meaning (Roe v. Wade). Considering "abortion" and "bans of abortion" as two different political ways of producing meaning, this writing analyses "abortion" as an existential means of producing meaning and "bans of abortion" as a post-existential means of producing meaning. The purpose of this writing is to show: "why does an existential means of producing meaning (e.g., abortion) become politically meaningless with reference to a post-existential condition that systematically makes meaning a predetermined notion?"

The basic difference between a book and a film is that: for a book, one needs to imagine the picture of the written discourse, and for a film, there is no need of imagining the discourse. Otherwise, the act of decoding the sign is the same for both book and film. Significantly, compositional elements are same as well (e.g., intertextuality). But the media of encoding a sign makes the difference: for a book, it is mostly symbolic (e.g., word) and occasionally iconic (e.g., photo) or both; but for a film, it is chiefly iconic though symbolic sign (e.g., sound) also plays a vital. However, this writing deals with the issue of intertextuality and tries to locate intertextualities depicted by Todd Phillips in his film, Joker (2019). Intertextuality According to Julia Kristeva, intertextuality denotes the notion of a literary text sharing an interdependent relationship with all the texts written before. She proposes, 'a literary text is not an isolated phenomenon but is made up of a mosaic of quotations, and that any text is the 'absorption and transformation of another'.' She also proposes that intertextuality signifies a switch of one or numerous sign systems into another or many. Kristeva uses the word 'transposition' to describe the switch. For her, transposition is not simply the echo or projection of discourses but the transposition of discourses into one another so that signs of a discourse are overlapped with signs from another discourse/s.

This study examines gender and complexion as biological identities of human beings and shows how these two biological identities conflict with humanism. Human beings have no control over being male or female as well as having different skin tones, which help to distinguish one from another. With time, gender and complexion have become strong human identities, which often influence individuals to think, talk, decide, and act making them conscious of their different gender and complexion-based identities and unconscious about humanism: the system that unites the human world rejecting all gender and colour based identities. Through textual analysis, I would like to examine gender and complexion based human identities to establish that the essences of these two biological identities differ from the humanistic philosophy. In this study, gender and complexion based identities are examined to show that gender and colour based discriminations between human beings are the outcome of the existing influence of biological identities. Humanism is shown as a system, which can overcome the problems created by gender-based and complexion-based identities.
