We should collaborate! is one of those easy answers that's easy to say and hard to do. And it is essential if we are going to tackle our complex and shared challenges. Dr Kate Simpson reflects on what it takes to build truly powerful, lasting collaborations that unleash possibilities. (And no it is not all about alignment) We'd love to hear your experiences of collaborating - the good, the bad and especially the ones you learnt from https://lnkd.in/eHN4c4V3 #systemcraft

Global systems change consultancy and institute helping leaders and organizations tackle complex problems.
About us
Leadership and strategy for systems change: We are a global consultancy and institute helping leaders and organizations tackle some of the world’s most complex problems. From our offices in Kenya, UK and USA, we have a long-standing record of impact on food systems, peace and inclusion, climate and nature. With our clients and partners, we're helping creating a more peaceful, equitable and sustainable world. A decade of transformative impact: From our work on the front lines, we’ve established a unique depth of understanding about what it takes to drive change at scale. For instance, we’ve partnered with the World Economic Forum to unlock inclusive private sector investment across Africa, worked with Yara to incubate the leading youth agripreneurship initiative on the continent, helped the UK’s National Grid devise it’s Net Zero Carbon Strategy, and worked with East African governments to understand and counter the threat of violent extremism. Working with the world’s leading organisations: We work with respected institutions spanning the development, government and private sectors, including USAID, the World Wide Fund for Nature, The Rockefeller Foundation, the NHS and Econet. They choose us for our applied understanding of system change, our relentless drive towards transformative action, our well-established regional understanding and networks and our positive approach to collaboration. A collaborative approach: Wasafiri, means “travellers” in Swahili, and was inspired by the phrase, “Traveller, there is no path: we make the path as we walk together.” This simple statement evokes a sense of how we will work with you; as trusted adviser and collaborator. Our people are change-makers and innovators; thematic experts, facilitators and researchers. They bring deep expertise, local insight, proven experience, and are a pleasure to work with.

This is the time of year when a few of us at Wasafiri (well maybe just Dr Kate Simpson) are distracted by the Tour de France So a massive Wasafiri congratulations to Biniam Girmay of Eritrea on becoming the first Black African to win a stage of the Tour de France. Given the popularity of cycling in a number of countries on the continent (notably Eritrea, Rwanda and South Africa) and the ability of riders, it has been a long time coming and points to the difficulty of accessing the teams, races, financing and facilities that competitive cycling needs. Hopefully this is just the start https://lnkd.in/eJfngrFg

We know that football has the incredible power to drive social change. Common Goal is hosting an amazing event this July during UEFA EURO 2024 in Berlin where they will be bringing together 300 passionate people – from football clubs, UEFA Champions League, government bodies, youth leaders, fans, players, sponsors, and national federations – to explore how football can drive sustainability. Wasafiri will be there too, discussing how football can shape the next generation of changemakers, among other fascinating topics and so will our friends over at Impact, who are dedicated to creating positive change and empowering action. This summit will a great opportunity to collaborate and use football’s power to tackle big sustainability challenges. Stay tuned for more details and join the movement! #Euro2024 #CommonGoal #InclusionInFootball
❤️ In 2020, Manchester United's Marcus Rashford went above and beyond in a way that we hadn't seen from a footballer many times in the past. Schools had to close in the UK due to the coronavirus pandemic, which meant a lot of children went without access to free meals leaving thousands of families in a desperate situation. Working with FareShare UK, he managed to raise funds and provide food for vulnerable children around the country, raising enough to provide three million meals according to the UK. His action didn't stop there as Rashford penned an open letter to British MPs, urging the government to reverse their decision not to provide free school meals during the summer holidays. Shortly after Rashford went public, the government reversed its decision. The 26-year-old's efforts to provide free school meals brought about significant changes in government policy. This movement came from a personal place, as he told The Players Tribune in February: "I was just trying to use my voice to make sure that kids weren't going hungry, because I know exactly how it feels." Rashford used his platform and resources to change the lives of so many children for the better. Football impacting society in the best way possible 🙌

Greetings from Kimana Oloitoktok, Kajiado County, South East Kenya. I had an interesting session with farmers sharing advocacy tools for mainstreaming agroecology in local government structures. We had a very lively discussion about transitioning to organic farming and using Agroecological practices. This group of farmers have never seen a successful organic farm, in fact one farmer said that he cannot believe that I only water my garden and without synthetic inputs, I harvest produce every week! His suspicion was I am receiving help from super powers! They have never seen or been exposed to biological control and when I provided two farmers with fruit fly and Tuta Absoluta pheromone traps, the traps were fully colonized in a few days indicating the high pest incidence that synthetic inputs have been unable to manage. And finally, when I shared with them how my farm is teaming with beneficial insects, it was a hard sell to convince them that there are actually good insects in our ecosystem. If these farmers have been using conventional farming systems for all these years, why are they still struggling with high pest incidences, low yield and exposure to highly hazardous pesticides leading to serious health problems? Are we still asking if organic can feed the world? When you work on the ground you find that there is still so much work to be done to transition farmers to sustainable farming practices. I understand that we all can't be in the field, but my call to action is for us to make it a priority to work on the ground with practitioners and reduce the paper work and bureaucracy if we hope to bring about real change. ~The harvest is plenty but the labourers are few~ Biovision Foundation, Harun Warui, PhD, Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung, ICIPE - International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology, IBMA - International Biocontrol Manufacturers Association, Koppert, James Njuguna, IFOAM - Organics International, Victor Manyengo
