Through the analysis of the Danubian Reformed Church District's rehabilitation list of November 2, 1956, this paper aims to categorize church disciplinary procedures against politically misbehaving Hungarian Reformed pastors in the early 1950s. The examples reveal that there is an immense diversity among the cases as far as the causes, the course, and the outcome of the ordeal are concerned. However, a possible pattern for classification emerges: 1. The state started secular legal action against a pastor. The church automatically suspended the pastor from all church activities. After the secular procedure (whether there was secular punishment for the pastor or not), the church governance tried to distance itself from the incriminated pastor, mostly by forced retirement. 2. There was no state legal action against the pastor; however, the church governance initiated a disadvantageous change in the pastor's employment status and sidelined him: a. In some cases, sidelining happened as a result of a show trial; b. In most cases, there was no actual state or church legal action against the pastor. The church governance intimidated the pastor by threatening him with a possible state or church legal action. Consequently, the pastor submitted himself to the disadvantageous change "voluntarily."

The first half of our study briefly describes the life and studies of Gábor Incze, the main stages of his pastoral career and its character, then describes in detail the processes leading up to his retirement, and finally gives an insight into the events of his rehabilitation, which had a dubious outcome.

This original research paper discusses Bishop Albert Bereczky’s (1893-1966) first contacts with revivalism, especially his spiritual conversion experience during his adolescent years. Albert Bereczky, Bishop of the Danubian Church District from 1948 to 1958, was one of the most significant, and yet controversial persons of the Reformed Church in Hungary during the 20th Century. From a popular preacher of the Revival Movement of the 1920s, church planter of the 1930s, rescuer of Jews during the War, he became the tool of state interest of the Communist regime in the 1950s. This paper sorts out the origins of his turn to the revival movement, like his troubled childhood, the emotional and financial insecurity of an illegitimate child, his troubled relationship with his biological father, the positive example of his stepfather, and his deviant adolescence behavior. By showing examples of his personal accounts the paper discusses whether Bereczky went through a ‘sudden’ or a ‘gradual’ c...

Jenő Sebestyén (1884-1950), the Historical Calvinism, and the Soli Deo Gloria Student Alliance.
This paper aims to give an introduction into the origins of Jenő Sebestyén's theological movement, the "Historical Calvinism", while it discusses Sebestyén's formative role in the creation and later development of the Soli Deo Gloria Student Alliance (SDG). Historical Calvinism can be understood as the Hungarian adaptation of Abraham Kuyper's (1837-1920) Neo-Calvinism. Following Dutch examples, Sebestyén inspired his students, especially Zoltán Töltéssy (1900-1932), at the Budapest Reformed Seminary to form a confessional-minded student movement in order to serve the evangelization of the Youth and the spiritual renewal of the Reformed Church in Hungary in the 1920s. Soon, the SDG would become widely popular among high school and university students, attain the support of the church officials, and pursue many debates with the inter-confessional student missionary organizations.

The article discusses a theological debate on church discipline between Calvinist pastors living in the French speaking territory of Pays de Vaud and the Zwinglian City-state of Berne from the mid-1530s to 1560. From 1536 Pays de Vaud belonged to the Bernese protestant administration but consisted primarily of French refugee pastors allegiant to Calvin and his ideas. They Calvinists of Pays de Vaud questioned the civil magistrate's right to interfere into church affairs especially into the practice of church discipline, such as exclusion from the Lord's Supper and excom-munication from the congregation. According to the Zwinglian establishment of Berne the right for exclusion and excommunication belonged to the civil magistrates. In the Calvinists' view the appropriate administrator of the exclusion and excommunication was the Genevian-type consistory, consisting of both clerical and civilian elected members. Noteworthy significance can be attributed to the events in the Pays de Vaud. On the one hand, banished from Bernese territory most of the Calvinist pastors of Vaud were sent to reinforce the French underground evangelical movement. The Calvinists' failure in the Pays de Vaud turned Calvin's attention to France by which the Calvinism became a world phenomenon. On the other hand, from this struggle emerged a theological justification for the state's supremacy over church affairs, namely by Wolfgang Musculus' De Magistratibus. Interestingly, this justification played a more important role in later times than in the actual controversy: Thomas Erastus, the builder of the territorial state– church of the Palatinate, John Withgift, the archbishop of Canterbury and the protector of Tudor-Absolutism against the Puritans, and the Dutch Remonstrants all were influenced by the teaching of Musculus. The goal of this paper is to present how the two controversial sides regulated its church affairs and, in addition, to show the highpoint of the debate between Calvin's Vaudois adherers and the Bernese Magistrate for the government of the church, especially for the right of excommunication.

The goal of this paper is to discuss Zwingli's role in the Reformation of Bern. Firstly, the earliest period of Berne's reformation is discussed, including the priority of Luther's influence on the city. Then those channels are discussed by which Zwingli practised a leading role in the city's evangelical movement; namely his writings relating to Berne and his extended correspondence. By Zwingli's correspondence, those persons are introduced who nourished close relationship with the Zurich reformer, especially Berchtold Haller. Finally, Zwingli's role at the Disputation of Berne and in the consolidation of the Bernese Reformation is examined.

On 24 May 1956, Délpest Reformed Diocese-by the consent of the Danubian Reformed Church District-downgraded the Szigetszentmiklós Reformed Parish to the status of mission parish. The 700 members strong, almost 400 hundred years old parish's chief elder was also relieved of his duties whilst the consistory was dissolved. The downgrading of the long-standing parish, the dissolution of the elected consistory, and the deprivation of its right to elect its minister gave rise to protests both inside and outside the parish. An array of scandals, disciplinary issues, and difficult as well as intricate lawsuits followed. The matter also generated waves in the entire Reformed Church since the presidium of the diocese overlooked the ecclesiastic rules and regulations, ordering the downgrade without the consent of the diocesan assembly-also assisted by the presidium of the church district-, accepting the new situation and appointing the mission minister. The case of Szigetszentmiklós is a great example to understand the global picture of the actions taken against the disloyal ministers and consistories by the ecclesiastic governance intertwined with the one-party state.

Attempts for Political Rehabilitation
in the Reformed Church in Hungary before 1956
On the 20th of October 1956, the General Convent, then the highest
executive body of the Reformed Church in Hungary, issued a Rehabilitation Edict. The Edict’s attachment sorted the pastors who were sidelined in the early 1950s supposedly for political reasons.
It is to be noted that the Edict was issued three days before the ’56
Hungarian Revolution started and the pre-Bereczky church government led by László Ravasz was reinstalled. It becomes apparent that the low-church reform movement (later known as the Reformed Renewal Movement), Bishop Bereczky’s belated High-Church reform steps – like Dean Sándor Fekete’s exclusion from power and László Papp’s appointment to deputy bishop of the Danubian Church District – moreover the positive precedent of the rehabilitation of the Lutheran Bishop Ordass all resulted in the start of the church rehabilitations before the ’56 Revolution turned the tables, reinstalling the pre-Bereczky church government. Because of this aspect, László Papp’s role in the starting of the rehabilitations and the inner-upper renewal attempt
of the church must be made clear.

Bishop Albert Bereczky (1893-1966) was undoubtedly one of the most significant, controversial, and yet ambivalent persons of the Reformed Church in Hungary during the 20th Century. If we call the period between the two world wars the “Ravasz-era,” then the first half of the 1950s can definitely be characterized by the name and activity of Albert Bereczky. After Ravasz’s retirement, Bereczky followed him in the bishopric seat of the Danubian Church District, then in the presidency of the Synod and Convent of the Reformed Church in Hungary. His office term was overlapped with the harshest anti-church policies of the Communist State led by Mátyás Rákosi.
The Bereczky’s contribution to these policies are still debated. Did he act on conviction or was he only the unconscious tool of the communist political interest? Did he save the Reformed Church from a much greater peril, like total eradication, or would there have been another way for the church instead of what Bereczky described as “the narrow road of the obedience by faith”? This study gives a short introduction to the main stages and formative events of Albert Bereczky’s life and activity, while represents the main opinions concerning his motivations.

The Exclusion of Dean Sándor Fekete from Church Government (1956)
Sándor Fekete (1915-1972), Dean of the Budapest North Church County between 1952-1956, was one of the most enthusiastic agents of communist state interest within the Reformed Church in Hungary. The means by which he arranged the relocation, suspension and, in some cases, the forced retirement of dissenting pastors, displays many parallels with the show trials of the Rákosi Era. Fekete’s methods made him infamous among his colleagues and blackened the whole church government. In order to regain his lost popularity, Bishop Albert Bereczky turned Fekete’s means against him, and made him leave the pastoral duty by the exaggeration of one of his “minor” abuses of power. This study shows examples of the nature of Fekete’s methods, the process of his disciplinary trial, and the reasons for his exclusion from church government and pastoral duty.

Wolfgang Musculus' Loci Communes (Common Places) of 1560 places the administration of the church under the authority of the secular magistrate, emphasizing that the secular government is in charge of even the most internal of church matters , like the appointment of pastors, the supervision of church discipline, the administration of church property, and the enforcement of ecclesiastical ordinances.
According to Helmut Kressner's viewpoint Musculus' understanding about the secular government's authority over church affairs was formed by the controversy between the Bernese Magistrate and the theologians of Geneva. James Thomas Ford's research points to the fact, that many of Musculus' arguments that appears in the Loci Communes have already been used in other tracts in which Musculus exhorted the Augsburg Council to establish the Reformation in the city in the 1530s.
The goal of this paper is to present these common arguments, discuss what they are based on, and examine what kind of role the early church and the Church Fathers played in Musculus' justification of the state's involvement in church matters.

Baden, 1526 és Bern, 1528. Két hitvita, amely az 1523-as zürichi-disputa mellett a legnagyobb súllyal nyomta rá bélyegét Svájc reformációjának történetére. Az első vereséget, a második győzelmet hozott a reformáció számára. Míg a badeni vereség azzal fenyegetett, hogy Zürichet és Zwinglit kitagadják a svájci konfederációból, addig a berni győzelem megnyerte a reformáció ügyének a legerősebb városállamot az Alpoktól északra, lehetőséget adva a mai francia-svájci területek reformációjának, és így közvetve Kálvin János genfi működésének.
A két vita résztvevői közel ugyanazok voltak, a megvitatott tételek, a felhozott érvek szintúgy. Mi állhatott, akkor a két vita ellentétes előjelű végkimenetele mögött?

nemegyszer a saját vonásaikat szemlélték.
Szembesült a menekült lét kihívásaival, bizonytalanságaival, a honvággyal, idegen létének felrovásával.
azoknak a reformátor formálódásában betöltött szerepét mutatja be röviden.

A tanulmánykötet tíz szerzője e "leckét jól megtanulva" veti papírra objek-tíven a reformáció hagyatékával kapcsolatosan megfogalmazott téziseit. 1 Egyetemi előadótanár, dékán. Az ’56-os forradalom kitörése előtt három nappal a Magyarországi Református Egyház Egyetemes Konventje elrendelte azoknak a lelkipásztoroknak a rehabilitálását, akiket az 50-es évek első felében az egyházkormányzat részéről politikai okokból méltatlan hátratétel ért. A méltatlan hátratételt idő előtti nyugdíjazás, fizetéscsökkentés, kikényszerített álláscsere, de akár a lelkészi tisztségtől és nyugdíjtól való végleges megfosztás is jelenthette. Voltak olyanok, akiket minden eljárás nélkül, megfélemlítéssel vettek rá a szolgálatuk elhagyására, másokkal szemben koncepciós fegyelmi eljárásokat folytattak le.

A vita nemcsak teológiai eszközökkel folyt.
