He returned to Yale and earned a doctorate in military and diplomatic history in 1975. In 1977, he took a position at Ohio State University as a professor of military history and related subjects. He was a senior fellow at the Naval War College from 1991 to 1992 and retired from Ohio State in 1995, taking the title of professor emeritus)
