Had an incredibly insightful discussion with Arun Murugesh, Som Narayan, moderated by Sathyanarayanan Sankaran on the circular economy and its challenges and opportunities. It is really reassuring to see the scale of work being done by both Carbon Masters and Saahas Zero Waste and the ways in which they are fostering collaboration within the sector. Can only see bigger things coming! Glad to have been included in this Abhinav Chidella, Rainmatter Foundation and Avaana Capital.
Moderated a panel discussion as a part of climate week organised by Rainmatter Foundation and Avaana Capital on waste and circularity with Arun Murugesh of Saahas Zero Waste, Karthik Natarajan of Fields of View and Som Narayan of Carbon Masters to unpack the ecosystem. Broad takeaways for me beyond the mind boggling numbers. 1. The government regulations in waste management have improved over the last decade and getting better. 2. Waste circularity is still not an industry and for entrepreneurs the time is now to jump in. 3. Start the solution journey anywhere in the value chain but build partnerships without which you will not be successful. 4. Asset light models will not solve problems and can be enablers at best. Capital needs to get ready to fund asset heavy businesses some of which have good IRR in the long run. 5. Some parts of the ecosystem are low IRR and will fall to the informal sector. There is a need to build anti fragility support structures for these actors. 6. Negative externalities of solutions currently relies on the solution providers and will need the ecosystem to weed out bad actors. 7. Reducing consumption and promoting alternatives is the larger conversation that needs to be had. Who will bell this cat? Will address some of these on the OoruLabs podcast (https://lnkd.in/gcNhSFKs) in the coming months. Watch this space. What is the role of games in policymaking? On August 1st, as part of the echo network's SAGE Human Library program, we played City Game to explore how games and simulations can influence policymaking. Participants tackled various needs from their city, from healthcare facilities and research institutes to urban farms and waterfalls in the centre of the city! We dove into an engaging discussion on how games can be a way to explore planning inclusive cities and meeting citizens' basic needs. 💡🏙️ #CityGame #UrbanPlanning #CollaborativeDesign #CityBuilding #CommunityEngagement #InteractiveExperience #PlayToPlan #FutureCities #InclusiveDesign

Fields of View, is building a free to access platform to help Civil society organisations working in vulnerability reduction and resilience to make sense of the community data they collect, and how to put it to use. The backbone of this platform is a simulation tool that we have been developing that looks at the intersectionality of factors that impact vulnerability and how social protection schemes and other resilience mechanisms impact a household's ability to withstand climate, income and health shocks. We conducted a workshop Mid-June, that helped us understand the various conceptions of vulnerability, pathways to resilience and the challenges faced towards achieving these pathways. We had 22 participants from 15 organisations participate in the workshop and contribute to shaping of the platform. The workshop findings shape how the platform’s outputs engage with data to help organisations build more data-informed materials for their advocacy work. It's here! The seventh and final feature in our series showcasing innovative projects supported by the Center for Data Science and Social Impact (CDSSI) at Indian School of Development Management (ISDM). I'm thrilled to introduce you to a project that stands as a true testament to the power of data-driven social impact. Let's welcome E-QLT: A Social Security Simulation Platform, led by the remarkable Yashwin Iddya, Chief Knowledge Officer at Fields of View. E-QLT: Empowering Communities, Transforming Lives E-QLT is a groundbreaking social security simulation platform designed to empower various stakeholders, including government bodies, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), and Self-Help Groups (SHGs). This platform enables these stakeholders to assess community vulnerabilities, test interventions, simulate shocks, and plan for resilience. By utilizing existing datasets or uploading their own, stakeholders can gain valuable insights and make more informed decisions. 🌐 Why E-QLT Shines Brightly: Enhancing Community Resilience*: E-QLT is dedicated to enhancing community resilience against climate and other shocks.. By working closely with CSOs focused on vulnerability reduction, the platform enables them to leverage data for more nuanced and effective approaches to community resilience. Experienced Leadership: Yashwin Iddya, with his Masters in Sustainable Resource Management, is committed to making sustainability actionable through simulation models. His passion and expertise have led to the development of E-QLT, and he continues to drive impactful initiatives. Innovative Mentorship: Yashwin Iddya is mentored by Bharath Palavalli, a dedicated researcher specializing in complex systems. Bharath's pioneering approach to fostering collaboration among diverse stakeholders earned him the prestigious Ashoka Fellowship in 2018. The E-QLT team also includes seasoned professionals like Sridhar Raman, with his 18+ years of experience in urban mobility and transportation modeling, Sukanya Deepak, a senior designer dedicated to shaping sustainable futures, and Srinidhi Santosh, a passionate researcher with a diverse skill set in urban planning and climate resilience. 🚀 A Collective Effort for Lasting Impact As we conclude this series, let's celebrate the collective efforts of the entire ISDM team, including Ravi Sreedharan, Gaurav Shah, Trisha Varma, and all the incredible individuals committed to making a difference. Vulnerability is a complex problem that stems from lack of common understanding of the multi-faceted factors that make households vulnerable. This has led to a situation where, despite many social protection interventions, reducing vulnerability has not kept in pace with the growing vulnerable populations. We seek to address these gaps this through our social security simulation platform E-QLT. Through the platform various stakeholders like government, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), Self Help Groups (SHGs) can see how vulnerable their target audiences are, test interventions, simulate shocks, and plan for resilience. We are looking for civil society orgainsations who work with vulnerable populations to be a part of scoping workshop. Through this worksop, we would like to understand the aspects of working in vulernability and resilience and how it transform to advocacy. With this collective information we wish to build E-QLT so that organisations can uses these data sets for their advocacy initiatives. As part of this endeavour, we wish to build a tool robust enough to handle the needs of different types of stakeholders as well as have the capacity to digest varying datasets to produce relevant outputs. Our simulation workshops with ‘Fields of View’, a Bangalore-based research and policy lab were truly transformative! Held in January and March 2024, these sessions revolutionized the skillsets of our II-year B.Com.(Hons.) students at Brindavan Campus. By instilling critical skills and fostering 360-degree thinking, we empowered them to grasp societal issues and pressing challenges, encouraging active engagement in creating a safer, sustainable, and secure world. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the team from 'Fields of View' and all participants for making these events a resounding success. “The idea was to create a ward-level water security planning tool; pick a ward and create awareness among people about the water security” In 2020, we built a game on water security planning and have been conducting sessions for public policy students and organisations alike. In mid-may, amidst the current water crisis, we conducted the game as an open-to-all event as a way of getting people to engage with the larger trade-offs in water security planning. Hanigalu is set in the fictional city of Paanipura, takes its players through the history of this city, once amply watered by lakes and rivers, but now facing a severe water crisis. “There is a lack of adequate data and continuous data on different aspects of water security. So, the second part of the game was aimed at highlighting these gaps. If you want to plan for a sustainable city, data is crucial for effective planning,” Says Yashwin, Chief Knowledge Officer. 📰 Article link: https://lnkd.in/g8aVpxq3 #simulation #water #watersecurity #equity #watersecurityplanning #sustainablecities #gamesforchange
