LSE Cities is an international centre at the London School of Economics and Political Science that investigates the complexities of the contemporary city. It carries out research, graduate and executive education, advisory and engagement activities in London and abroad. Extending LSE’s century-old commitment to the understanding of urban society, LSE Cities investigates how complex urban systems are responding to the pressures of growth, change and globalisation with new infrastructures of design and governance that both complement and threaten social equity and environmental sustainability.

The study evaluates the proximity economy's socio-economic weight & its role as a sustainable and innovative ecosystem. Explores different forms of proximity, examines how the proximity economy connects with circular, sharing, and social economies, and outlines key policies and strategies that can foster and sustain the proximity economy. A collaboration with a great team led by Pierre Hausemer, Nessa Gorman, Francesca Squillante and experts Stefania Fiorentino, Sandra Spule, and Luca Tricarico.
📄 The study on Scoping the Socio-economic Performance of the EU Proximity Economy is out! The study aims to evaluate the #proximityeconomy's socio-economic weight & its role as a sustainable and #innovative ecosystem. The analysis focuses on estimating the potential size of the proximity economy and provides an overview of the different policies and approaches which enable the development and success of the proximity economy. The study examined the policies and practices within EU 27 Member States and the United Kingdom (UK). The policy mapping identified 168 policies across the EU27 and the UK, showcasing different examples of policies, initiatives, and approaches that support a proximity economy ecosystem and align with the new definition and description of the proximity economy. Closing off an endeavour commenced two years ago when I had just received the first package of material for the Executive MSc in Cities at The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). Yesterday my degree arrived – I was in London for graduation in July but left the certificate to be couriered not bent into my luggage. This transformative interdisciplinary program challenged us to rethink our understanding and amplified our attention to the complex challenges and opportunities facing cities. We developed capabilities to analyse, strategize and realise urban change. We did presentations, research, discussions and debates and applied tools and techniques to case studies and live challenges. Huge credit and thanks to LSE Cities which has developed this sophisticated and expansive program, and particularly Philipp Rode, Savvas Verdis, Ricky Burdett and Tony Travers who led this learning journey, were generous mentors, and brought in experts, urban leaders and local and global organisations for us to engage and work with. And my thanks to those who encouraged me to apply for this program: Carlo Castelli, Maria Vassilakou, and Dr Allison Stewart, and Ludo Campbell-Reid who supported this endeavour. Collaborating and connecting with a global cohort of excellent colleagues who brought perspectives and wisdom from a diversity of professional backgrounds and experience was a highlight and a pleasure. The Masters in Cities has synthesised and expanded my appreciation of how spatial, social, economic and environmental elements of cities intersect and interrelate, and has cemented my enthusiasm for shaping and leading urban change. We are delighted to announce a new LSE Cities project in partnership with Islington Council, Re-thinking Green Transitions: A collaboration with young people and policymakers in Islington. Over the next year, Imogen Hamilton-Jones will be working with a fantastic team of young researchers from Islington (aged 18-26) and policymakers at Islington Council to bring young people to the heart of public and policy debates around the green transition in Islington. This participatory research aims to create space for young Londoners to imagine, discuss and share their visions for just and green neighbourhood transitions. Through urban and digital ethnography and creative workshops, we will unpack youth urban imaginaries of local transitions and explore how young people could shape climate policy in Islington.
