At this point, I doubt anything would surprise me. Ten bucks says you're wrong.

  • Guys I’m not an American people - are these super old notes? Fury does a bit of a double take so I’ve always wondered.

Also, if they are old, are they actually worth a lot more than 10 dollars, or is it not old *enough* to work like that?

  • @pollydoodles

From what I can see of the money it looks like a standard $10 from 2012

The bottom one is older. And $10s still look like the top. The last question about how old it would have to be to be worth more than 10 dollars I'm not sure of

  • Thank you, that’s so interesting!

  • I think Fury is surprised bc Steve is paying up on a bet made entirely in jest. He never wanted Steve’s money; the bet was made to indicate how confident Fury is that Steve will be surprised in the modern world.

Further, Steve hands him the 10 without comment (but on, y'know, a flying aircraft carrier), leaving Fury to recall their previous conversation and understand that Steve is acknowledging Fury was right.

(Doylian explanation of which is that Whedon wanted to call back to the previous joke, but the bit didn't need much screen time, so nothing needed to be said.)

  • Gotcha. Me & my husband did a big Marvel rewatch recently and were suddenly like - wait, does Steve have old money? We would never know cause we don’t know what USD looks like 😂 but it does make sense for it just to be the callback for Fury. Firmly establishes Steve’s character, too

  • steve doesn’t have any family heirlooms left that he can give to tony as a token of commitment, so he gives him one of his two dog tags to keep instead. tony knows that when steve was issued his tags, the regulation was that one would stay with his body if he was killed in action and the other would be taken away for record keeping. they don’t talk a lot about what it means that steve gave one to tony, but it probably means about the same thing as tony giving steve override permissions on his suits.
