Removal of Permissions

[edit]

I've contacted you before. We have a user at English WN (TUFKAAP) -- voted to have his sysop/admin. privs removed -- I am an Admin and Bureaucrat there. Can you take that action for us, please? Bddpaux (talk) 15:45, 24 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Bddpaux: Hi, local bureaucrats on the English Wikinews are able to remove sysop rights. Have you tried contacting one of them first? EPIC (talk) 15:50, 24 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
Did you realise that @Bddpaux: is a bureaucrat himself - so he can remove it yourself via wikinews:Special:UserRights. Leaderboard (talk) 17:28, 24 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Leaderboard: Bddpaux is actually not a bureaucrat at enwikinews anymore - they resigned that role in October last year [1]. That is why I directed them to one of the other three bureaucrats. EPIC (talk) 17:30, 24 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
Oh apologies; he said above that he was. Leaderboard (talk) 18:26, 24 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
Actually: You're right! I most certainly did! Brain cramp! How can I get Bureaucrat back?--Bddpaux (talk) 19:41, 24 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Bddpaux: Hi, I do not know if this applies to the English Wikinews, but some wikis have a system where if you resigned your user rights uncontroversially and in good standing, you can request your rights back. If this is not the case at enwikinews, what you will have to do is submit a new candidacy for bureaucratship. EPIC (talk) 20:24, 24 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
Yes. Right. Yes. Problem is: Our 3 'crats are pretty much in the wind at present. That is the sticky wicket. I am trying to put some kind of infrastructure back together again, if possible. I have been voted to become a CU (as we are hurting for CU's)... but I think I should get 'crat back and then worry about CU. See? And, for the record: there was no controversy -- I just retired, and now am trying to UNretire. So: Can you turn on a switch or two?--Bddpaux (talk) 22:44, 24 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Bddpaux: Well, I also noted their inactivity, but to begin with, you should try contacting them. For example, Gryllida edited globally a little over a month ago, so that might be a hope. In the case a new bureaucrat candidacy will still be required, we would also leave that to local bureaucrats first, but it can be processed by us in the case that the local bureaucrats do not respond, as long as it meets the general voting criteria. So, yes, try to reach the crats first (and perhaps also send an email notification about it to one of them, which a lot of the time does give a quicker response time even if they are less active). EPIC (talk) 01:02, 25 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Check User at English WN

[edit]

So: Can you take action on my CU nomination, please? Hopefully, my 'Crat nomination will move quickly.--Bddpaux (talk) 21:27, 29 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi again! Well, as per the global CheckUser policy, the vote will need to reach at least 25 votes for us to be able to action on it (which can be a bit difficult, but, sadly, it is the policy). EPIC (talk) 21:30, 29 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
For the love of Holy God -- there aren't 25 people within 700 miles of English WN on a yearly basis who would even comprehend voting! Again: Our are pretty much COMPLETELY in the wind. There has to be some kind of work around. 25 is ABSURD for a project our size.--Bddpaux (talk) 15:02, 30 May 2024 (UTC)Reply
The policy has a high requirement since it's a sensitive right (and the same requirement is mentioned in the local policy for appointing CUs), but I too agree that 25 votes can be somewhat too high (which is why multiple wikis have had trouble being able to appoint local CUs :/). However, the two CU candidates in 2021 did manage to get 25 votes, so it's not completely hopeless either, and it might be easier now that it is in the sitenotice (and advertised at the water cooler too, I assume). EPIC (talk) 15:14, 30 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Reasons

[edit]

So, you are comfortably aware of the kerfuffle at English Wikinews. My words have absolutely been an incendiary component within that whole mess, no doubt. I am passionate about Citizen journalism and have given many years to that project. I've done some notable soul searching over the past 18 hours or so. This week, I've been accused of all manner on non-sensical stuff (novel news to me), including various forms of weirdness about some of my edit summaries (I write the most boring edit summaries to be found anywhere, when I actually write them); it is a sizable bunch of oddness. Since about December 1st, the vandalism at that project has been an exhausting tsunami (you may've worked some magic recently to help out with that, not sure) and have sought to encourage and maybe develop some reporters/Reviewers when/if/where I could. This has impacted my mood as far as interacting with others, and I suspect maybe even my blood pressure: that is utter madness for a volunteer wiki. I acted a bit too quickly on an RfP -- I did. Things could've been worked on/tweaked, but my action was utterly overruled. It takes hardly a light wind to run people away from that project, and I got a little too excited that someone wanted to hang out for longer that 2 hours.
A little time and a little distance can often be good medicine. I talk about how much I value Citizen journalism. My behavior needs to show that, or else I'm just a cheap hypocrite. There are some people there who show up, pot stir a wee bit, behave in an oppositional manner and then aren't seen again for 3 weeks. All these things lumped together, lead me to this: You guys huddle up(heck, you're a Steward -- you are essentially Darth Vader around here), and do whatever it is you deem appropriate. My current RfP's? Whatevs. Do as thou wilt. User George Ho has literally launched a counter-campaign on those -- I mean burning the midnight oil to work against me(I'm telling you: that dude breaks more than he fixes). I'm not retiring. I'm not quitting. I'm not vanishing. But: I am entering a period of self-exile. To that end:
*Between this moment, and the end of December, I may offer about 40 key strokes over there (aggregate) -- but no more. I need some distance to figure out where I am and where that project will land.
*During that time, as an Administrator, I might zap a few 'speedy delete' articles, but no other actions whatsoever. For 52 weeks from today, I will not push a single button (comments or otherwise) for one single RfP -- not a single one -- those will be a no-fly zone for me.
*For the remainder of this year, I will not offer a single word (vote, comment or otherwise) about policies, or attempt to bring in old users or anything like that; over here OR over there. I received some bizarre and strange criticisms in that department, let me tell you.
My mentoring as a new Administrator (quite some time back) spanned about 10 seconds. Generally, my interest in 'Crat or CU is just simply because they are so darned difficult to find over there -- nothing more. During my exile, people there can call me a vegetarian pirate and I will not respond. That is unusual for me. Generally I do NOT lie down when people disparage my words or actions -- and 2 users there have sprained their ankles this week to do that very thing: and I didn't leave it untouched. -- but I will for the rest of this year.
If you want to comment here -- please do so! I won't say anything ugly to you -- I won't. Heck, you're probably one of the most innocent parties involved in this! Thanks for your time. I'll see you down the road.--Bddpaux (talk) 15:28, 1 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi again - I did note what happened but I don't know this whole story. That is why I did not change my vote, but rather that I needed more time to think about it. EPIC (talk) 15:47, 1 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
It is critical that I dont paint myself as an angel —- I wasn’t. But this has proven to me that, at WMF projects, one can be “mean and bad”, without being “wrong”. User George Ho is, with surgical precision, engaged in a counter campaign against my RfP’s. He tosses words like ‘civility’ around, while strolling about with 2 gallons of gasoline and a blowtorch. He most probably isn’t violating policy per se, but he has destruction in his eyes, I promise. I mean: I would bet he is the kind of guy who brings a handful of darts to a hanging. I see what defense lawyers mean when they use the term, “charge stacking”. It is largely wicked when one considers how little he HAS EVER DONE to push a broom or a mop around that project. The egalatarianism at WMF projects doubles as poison. It is demoralizing at a basic level.—Bddpaux (talk) 21:38, 1 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi - stewards do not have any special authority in other projects, and what would be the best thing would be to contact the administrators at viwiki about the issue. EPIC (talk) 14:39, 8 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi EPIC

[edit]

You locked global the User:AdmiralDonSchneider with the notice "Cross-wiki abuse: CommanderInDubio". Do you have please any concrete facts? In the German CU have been made some wrong conclusions, they write there "probably". "Probably" is no reason to ban or lock. By the way the user has no edits. As a bureaucrat on sourceswiki and formerly admin in some more projects I know the matter a bit. Cheers. Answer pls here or at sourceswiki. -jkb- 20:30, 18 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi -jkb-, I locked AdmiralDonSchneider and DerWizzard after CommanderInDubio was locked, based on the CU results at dewiki which had indicated that both accounts were likely operated by CID. I had not seen any concerns about the results possibly being incorrect when I had locked, but in the case scenario they are not related I wouldn't have any problems with unlocking them. EPIC (talk) 20:48, 18 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
There are no „wrong conclusions“ and they didn't write „probably“. They are certain (as certain as CU can be) that AdmiralDonSchneider and DerWizzard are related to each other. And they say it's "very likely" (not just „probable“) these accounts are sockpuppets of CID, based on the technical evidence, the abusive mails (which have been turned over to stewards as well) and the editing behaviour of DerWizzard, all of which leads to no other likely explanation rather than them being sockpuppets of CID. There is extensive documentation regarding the technical evidence on CU wiki, which dewiki CU and stewards have looked at.
And regarding AdmiralDonSchneider having no edits: The account was involved in an abusive mail + crosswiki sock puppetry and has already been blocked at dewiki -> more than enough reason for global locking. Johannnes89 (talk) 21:11, 18 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hi Johannnes89, I didn't ask you anything. -jkb- 21:15, 18 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
As the responsible check user I can confirm that Johannes' remarks are correct. - Squasher (talk) 21:33, 18 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hi -jkb-, I'm a bit confused as to why you're standing up for CID here after he put you on CC in his harassing mails and you actually know exactly why the lock is appropriate here. --Icodense (talk) 22:03, 18 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hello

[edit]

Good day, can I patrol epic ota, thank you in advance. @EPIC Selamiben (talk) 15:21, 19 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Huh, what do you mean? EPIC (talk) 15:23, 19 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
https://meta.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/Meta:Autopatrollers I meant it @EPIC Selamiben (talk) 15:25, 19 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
It's still not too clear to me what you want to say. I assume you are requesting autopatrol rights? For the most part they are not given on request but rather mostly sua sponte by administrators. However, you can still try making a request at Meta:RfH. EPIC (talk) 15:37, 19 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I request auto patrol, I made a request on the page. @EPIC Selamiben (talk) 15:48, 19 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Selamiben: autopatroller only affects your ability to edit in a very marginal way and not in the way you probably think. What's your specific reason for requesting autopatroller rights? --SHB2000 (tc) 12:43, 20 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
I don't have any special reason @SHB2000 Selamiben (talk) 12:48, 20 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Welp, you've explained for yourself why that request on RfH was declined. SHB2000 (tc) 12:55, 20 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hey Epic, you blocked one of their socks, globally--I don't know if you're a CU, but it is probably a good idea to hardblock their IPv6 /64 range. Thanks! Drmies (talk) 15:23, 19 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi, indeed I have CU at loginwiki but unfortunately most accounts I found were already staled there (they had used old sleepers). However I had gblocked one of the /64 ranges they used, which I assume is the same range that you are referring to here. EPIC (talk) 15:35, 19 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hey EPIC--this guy showed up again, but through the French wiki: User:IEditArticlesAboutMusic. I can't tell if your global block of that range was a hardblock--maybe they used a different IP? There was one regular IP in the list I saw, so maybe they do get out of the house sometimes. Would you mind having a look again? Thanks! Drmies (talk) 16:37, 28 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Never mind--I see you already blocked a range. Thanks! Drmies (talk) 16:46, 28 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
No problem. It was a softblock, yes (since it was a big range), but it expired today. Reblocked it and locked another sock I just found. EPIC (talk) 16:51, 28 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hello, I applied for the Epic Global Blocking Exemption. Can you review? I can't edit this. Selamiben (talk) 11:19, 20 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

I don’t really know why my IP adress was blocked

[edit]

Hello I am writing this because recently, when I wanted to see if I can edit articles, I noticed that I am globally IP blocked to 2025 for something called “Long-term abuse” (don’t really know what this means). Maybe I actually did something wrong, I don’t say I’m holy but the notification didn’t show me what did I write or what page did I edit that I’ve got banned. I just don’t know for what actual reason I am blocked. I just want to know that’s it. I really hope that You will reply to my question, thanks for taking time and reading this! MrPenguinzzz (talk) 15:40, 20 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I don't know what IP or range you are editing from. In either case, please email us at stewards@wikimedia.org with more information and we will assist you. EPIC (talk) 15:42, 20 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Anyway, shouldn't you consider Steward_requests/Global#Global_lock_for_Genggi_Tetomu to be re-opened? There are potentially new evidences to support my "lock evasion" claim. Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 11:44, 23 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
I've taken a second look, but I'm still not entirely sure whether this actually indicates lock evasion. EPIC (talk) 12:54, 23 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Again EPIC if my sock is locked can I contribute using my main account Exphainet? The policy is not clear at all. 14.170.194.78 14:47, 23 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Nope - if your account is locked you simply have to appeal by emailing us at stewards-appeals@wikimedia.org. Using another account to circumvent the lock is lock evasion. EPIC (talk) 14:49, 23 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Global lock for Assifbus

Hello, EPIC, User:Assifbus was blocked by the sysop of Chinese Wikipedia, Chinese Wikinews as well as English Wikipedia due to long-term abuse, would you please lock the account? I would generally say that TwinkleGlobal is the best to use for reporting to SRG, although regarding the specific user you are mentioning, given what has already been said on the last SRG requests for the same user I would recommend opening a request for a global ban instead. After some investigation, I believe that - is ChanComThemPho's main IP range. You should do some checkuser on the IP range to catch sleeper accounts. I've blocked hundreds of his socks over many years. Thanks! Nguyentrongphu (talk) 00:52, 30 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

That should be it, we don't have a local VRT queue or mailing list. You should watchlist Meta:Requests for CheckUser information (which is very low volume), and if you don't already you may want to patrol Category:Requests for unblock. Best regards, — xaosflux Talk 11:03, 6 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, going ahead and adding that one to the watchlist. EPIC (talk) 11:27, 6 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Global blocking request

Hello, because the Steward requests/Global page is protected, I could not submit my request there, so I entered the conversation directly with you. Please globally block the following accounts that are user socks "S-M-T-AA (talk · contribs)". These accounts have been identified and closed in Persian Wikipedia.

Done for Haft Sabz, pending with Linclinc7373 since that one doesn't seem to be blocked at fawiki. Note that you can place requests for global lock on Talk:Steward requests/Global, which will then be moved to Steward requests/Global. EPIC (talk) 11:41, 12 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Potential Sock of Jefferyhhh

[edit]

Hello EPIC,

Local user Jefferyqqq has recently submitted an unblock request. Some users have pointed out that their username is very similar to Jefferyhhh and Jefferymmm, both of which you have locked. Please perform a check if possible to determine the relationship between Jefferyhhh and the two users listed prior. As a local SPI clerk and admin, I recognize that this request is a bit informal, but I still think it deserves to be looked after. 22:13, 12 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, I will look into it in a while. EPIC (talk) 22:14, 12 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
@ATannedBurger: Just took a look through LWCU and they are  Confirmed to the two others, along with multiple sleepers. All related accounts locked, and the unblock request can be declined. EPIC (talk) 22:41, 12 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Dölja

[edit]

Request for Unblock surahalmulk

[edit]

Dear Wikipedia administrator EPIC,

I am writing to request the unblocking of my account "surahalmulk," which was blocked for "cross-wiki spam," and also my website link, "surahalmulk.net." I assure you that any actions interpreted as spam were unintentional, and I am committed to adhering to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. I value my ability to contribute to Wikipedia and understand the importance of maintaining the integrity of the project. If there were specific edits or actions that led to this block, I would appreciate more information so that I can address these issues directly and avoid similar mistakes in the future. I am willing to take any necessary steps to demonstrate my commitment to constructive editing, including: Reviewing and following Wikipedia's policies on cross-wiki editing Limiting my edits to areas where I have specific knowledge or expertise Engaging in discussion on talk pages before making significant changes Participating in any required training or mentorship programs I assure you that, if unblocked, I will be more careful in my editing practices and will strive to make valuable contributions to the encyclopedia. Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to the opportunity to resume editing and collaborating with the Wikipedia community.

Here is the reason, in my opinion: When I created my first page on the Wikipedia page, "Surah Al-Mulk," me and my other partner added content and a link to the original website, surahalmulk.net. Everything was OK. But after one month, a user named Malikhammad—I don't know who this is. This guy massaged me on my talk page and said, Give me your account; I will paste your link on every wiki page related to Surah Mulk. Then I said, "Okay, it can help other users read in-depth content who are interested. But I don't know that this guy just passed a link to every wiki without any content or information. Then, I said to this malikhammad, Give me my account. They said no; I will give you your account when you give me money. Then I created another account. After creating an account, I see that the user is blocked, as is my website link. Then, I take time to think about what to ask the wiki admin. That's the truth about why an account is banned. My request is to unblock my account and link. If you think that the account is not able to unblock then please unblock the link. Once Again Thank you for your time.

Sincerely, surahalmulk Hammadbhipro1 (talk) 07:26, 16 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi - happy to hear that you don't plan on repeating what led to your account being locked, but unfortunately, this is not the way to appeal. If you want to appeal your lock, please email us through stewards-appeals@wikimedia.org with an appeal and it will be handled in a timely manner. Creating a new account after your first one was locked is lock evasion, which is equally lockable, so please don't do so - I will therefore also lock this account, at least until your main account is unlocked. EPIC (talk) 07:58, 16 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
I have send a 50 + email but no one replay me. every day i write a new appeal and send, but no one help me, i have write a request to so many admin, but no one helping me. 154.80.105.14 03:43, 17 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Your request will be handled once there is time. We get a lot of lock appeals, thus why it can take time. EPIC (talk) 06:32, 17 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you! Finally, a person responded to my email and asked me 5 important questions. I have answered it, finally. Now I'm waiting for their response. Thank you 154.81.247.103 04:16, 22 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Deletion of my page

[edit]

Hey!

I recently published a page Grace Charis https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grace_Charis it says you deleted it. I am not sure why, can you help me and restore it? Everything on there is true and owned by me. Thanks. Gracecharis (talk) 23:39, 16 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi, like I noted on your talk page the page was deleted because it was out of scope for this wiki. See Meta:Scope for more information; this wiki does not host original encyclopedic content, and that is the scope of Wikipedia. EPIC (talk) 23:45, 16 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Possibly hoax across project involving a "Joseph Williams"

[edit]

Hi EPIC! I'm an editor primarily working on English Wikipedia, and I'm unfamiliar with the procedures for handling suspected hoaxes across multiple Wikimedia projects. I apologize if this isn't the most appropriate venue to raise this concern.

There appears to be a coordinated effort to create entries (likely a hoax or possibly just a non-notable person) about a "Joseph Williams" across various Wikimedia projects, including English Wikipedia. Recently, I reverted an article hijack attempt on the English Wikipedia for "Joseph Williams (music publisher)" (revision history: [2]), which appears to be part of this attack. The attempt originated from a new user ("Aka4627"), who changed a redirect into an article and used a false edit summary.

Further investigation reveals a corresponding Wikidata item (Q126122910) containing the same (likely fabricated) information. I noticed many of the edits on Wikidata pages seem to originate from group users that you globally blocked (potentially sock puppets) who only edit these related pages. The Wikidata revision history shows user "Removevandasalim" for most of the recent edits perpetuating the hoax and has not yet been locked.

According to the Wikidata item, similar hoax articles appear to exist on other language Wikipedias.

I'm bringing this to your attention because it seems you've previously globally locked some of the users involved in this hoax attempt. Thanks! Wikipedialuva (talk) 05:34, 18 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Odd account creations

[edit]

I am trying to understand the odd creation of my account at the Kiswahali Wikipedia as Ldm1954 on July 23rd. I am on the English wiki as Ldm1954 and have a reasonable number of edits so I am not at newbie, but do not know the inner workings. A beaurocrat on the Kiswahili wiki MuddybLonga has given me admin right for 24 hours so I can look. I see that you recently did a block for abuse that might be similar, or not. At the moment all I can see is a large number of user creations similar to here which just say "created by machine" or "was created". In almost all cases these new accounts have zero edits, so many to most are spurious. Maybe you have more expertise to investigate; I will have a bit more of a look later. Ldm1954 (talk) 13:41, 24 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi! Excuses but I don't really understand your question; what are you trying to ask? EPIC (talk) 13:46, 24 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Can you look at the creation list I indicated "here" above and see who created those accounts. For at least one you did a global block recently. The question is why were they (mine is only one of 20 or more) created without permission. Ldm1954 (talk) 23:42, 24 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Copy pate of content from above:You did a block for abuse that might be similar, or not. At the moment all I can see is a large number of user creations similar to here. Ldm1954 (talk) 23:44, 24 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Ah, no, the lock in question was for an LTA who generally has a habit of registering at a lot of projects. They are likely unrelated to the other user creations at swwiki. EPIC (talk) 00:50, 25 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
That account was one of those created at swwiki "by machine", the same as my account. I think there was more than one which was blocked/locked.
I dont know how to find out who/what created the accounts. It was at a minimum an unwarranted software glitch, at a max deliberate vandalism, sockpuppet or something. Ldm1954 (talk) 01:22, 25 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Addendum. What has happened is that accounts/pages from Wikipedia have been copied to the swwiki, see sw:Mtumiaji:Muhammed amine benloulou, and similar on the list.
"What you see on this page was copied from https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Muhammed_amine_benloulou"
Either someone released a bit on wikimedia to do this or on swwiki. Ldm1954 (talk) 08:14, 25 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
What that means is that there is no local userpage, and therefore it shows the global userpage instead (the Meta userpage) if there is one. EPIC (talk) 08:24, 25 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Spambots by username?

[edit]

Hi, EPIC. I was wondering if an account with a spambot-like username registers on a project that spambots target, can they be reported?

For example, the user "Wyatt73P43944598" from cswikiversity. ClumsyOwlet (talk) 18:14, 24 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

I would say the answer is sometimes. I do remember now, that I got a similar question not too long ago (User talk:EPIC/Archive 2024#Spambots), I think I could apply the same answer here as well. EPIC (talk) 18:19, 24 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
(Regarding the specific account, looking at LWCU that does indeed look like a spambot, so I locked that one) EPIC (talk) 18:21, 24 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

A quick question

[edit]

Hello and Greetings, I am wondering if you could guide me in the right direction. Our wikipedia's logo text is very old and in an outdated font. I would like to change it. dv:wikipedia

-Glacious (talk) 22:57, 27 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi! Judging by previous cases you would need to open a local discussion proposing a potential logo change - if there is consensus to change to the relevant logo you can create a Phabricator task to have it implemented. Superpes15 is likely more familiar with this than I am, but I think that this would be the way to go. EPIC (talk) 23:10, 27 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi. I'm about: Steward_requests/Global/2024-w31#Global lock for HOMIEZAVR.

Deletions

[edit]

Hi! I noticed that you do many of the deletions I request on Global Sysops page. I always check the files before I request deletion. And I think that many of the files in scn:Catigurìa:Pruposti pi eliminazzioni lesta should be deleted (and many other files too) (unused and no license for example). But there are also some files there that I'm not sure about (put there by someone else long ago). So instead of just putting more files in there I would like to hear if you have any advice? Does "simple requests for deletion" mean files that we should only request deletions if we are sure about all the files in the category? And should I remove the files I'm not sure about or should I just go ahead and request a deletion and let the global sysop decide? I requested deletion of the NowCommons-files yesterday to reduce the number of files in the category so that helped a bit :-) --MGA73 (talk) 16:23, 7 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi! As you say GSR is meant for requesting clear-cut/simple actions, so I would say it depends on the rationales for the speedy deletion requests. In the case of unused files with no license, the NowCommons stuff and other uncontroversial/clear deletions, I think they can go to GSR. In potentially controversial or unclear cases, at least in the case of scnwiki, I'd say to seek the opinion of one of the two local sysops (one of which is also a steward), for them to determine whether they should be deleted or not. Of course, this is not the case for all wikis (many of them do not have (active) local sysops), and in those cases such requests could best go to SRM. EPIC (talk) 16:46, 7 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. I will find a way to separate simple from perhaps not so simple cases. And if I ever list cases that could be controversial then I will make sure to write that in the request. It seems the local users are not really active (I wrote to them in May). On some wikis the admins do not wish to delete files because it would upset the community. So files I nominated for deletion 10 years ago are still not deleted. On some wikis it is the admins that upload the bad files. One day I might start a RfC about what to do (if anything) (as suggested on SRM). --MGA73 (talk) 07:21, 8 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

This request seemed to be very strange to me, it looks like a common user instead of a vandal. And CP case may be forwarded to WMF Office instead of dealing by stewards. Can you check the deleted photo about whether it is correct? Lemonaka (talk) 08:45, 8 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
It appeared to be correct as far as I remember, but Legal deleted it from the servers (our practice for dealing with CSAM is locking, suppressing if not already done, and informing WMF Legal to delete it entirely). I think they have appealed their lock and I believe Legal was informed about the appeal too, so it's continuing from there. EPIC (talk) 08:58, 8 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Appeal for Unbanning of Account “alexio2727”

Hello,

I’m writing to request the unbanning of my account, “alexio2727.” I believe the ban was issued due to an incorrect association with abusive behavior. I want to clarify that I have not engaged in any disruptive activities, and I am not connected to the other accounts that seem to be linked to mine.

The block on my home IP has also affected my ability to contribute to Wikipedia, even though I have always acted in good faith. I kindly ask that my case be reconsidered, as I am committed to following Wikipedia’s guidelines and contributing positively to the community.

Thank you for your understanding. 2600:1012:B0C1:7431:7C45:927B:B2B8:1A02 12:47, 9 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

And we are going to overturn this result. 阿南之人 (talk) 06:56, 12 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
The reasons why the global lock was not implemented was stated in that request. In case they start being abusive cross-wiki then we can absolutely lock, but outside of some edits to an unblock request two days ago there has been no edits from that account since 2020, the user already had their talk page access revoked and made no further edits since then. EPIC (talk) 07:29, 12 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Add: I just got to know that at least one another user @ATannedBurger (who is one of the admistrators in zh-wiki) received a severe threathening e-mail from EnglishWashington (the e-mail contents were published on the ATannedBurger's Telegram channel). Dear EPIC, I understand your reason not to block him, and thanks to your reply and concern, but I don't know how to deal with users like him? 自由雨日 (talk) 10:24, 12 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@自由雨日: Are the email threats verifiable? If so then I think I could lock the account (we had a similar case recently which also led to a global lock). If ATannedBurger could contact me with the evidence, that would be helpful (or I could try and contact them myself). EPIC (talk) 10:35, 12 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@自由雨日 Which channel is the email content in? 阿南之人 (talk) 11:03, 12 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
The ATannedBurger's Telegram channel. You may tap on his account to see it. Although the channel's public, I don't know if it's proper to make it public here, considering ATannedBurger may not want too many users to know. 自由雨日 (talk) 11:12, 12 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
I could contact them privately for the evidence, in case they could provide it. EPIC (talk) 11:20, 12 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
I just received a response, so I have now locked the account. So Done. EPIC (talk) 19:14, 12 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Piermark

[edit]

Hello again. You just globally blocked user:Grundtvig Kirke. For your information, user:Den Danske Folkekirke is a sockpuppet. Supertoff (talk) 04:59, 15 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, locked that one as well. EPIC (talk) 05:39, 15 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Dear @EPIC. I am a (relatively new) CU on wp:fr. I see that you blocked globally many Piermark accounts recently, I am trying to understand the process. For ex. that one m:Special:CentralAuth/Radio Occitània jumelée Radio Beckwith, I don't see the corresponding investigations on en:Wikipedia:Long-term_abuse/Piermark, where can I find them? I would also like to understand if we still need to do anything on the french side, of if everything has been taken care of. --Lewisiscrazy (talk) 16:39, 16 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hi! Most of them have not been found in any CU investigation, but most have rather first been reported to SRG (and some on IRC) for us to lock, and then checkusered by a steward through loginwiki (LWCU). Some of them are found in the LWCU investigation and then locked, but they are mainly found based on behavior.
Most of it has been taken care of, but it could happen that the frwiki CUs could find something that we haven't since LWCU only covers registration data. EPIC (talk) 17:29, 16 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for your answer. Do we want to keep blocking junk accounts for ever? Is there a global discussion about blocking the IP range that is being used repeatedly ? --Lewisiscrazy (talk) 08:56, 17 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
There hasn't been, but they mainly use large mobile network ranges, meaning it would unfortunately be too much collateral for longer global blocks. EPIC (talk) 09:02, 17 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Blocking user which adds news about en:Kim Dotcom ?

[edit]

I see that user Estrellato asked you to block an IP user Steward_requests/Global#Global_block_for_2A02:8440:7158:B276:1014:B8FF:FE4B:D5D7 due to cross-wiki abuse.

It came to my attention when Estrellato came to Serbian Wikipedia to revert IP's contribution, but it seems to me that it is a valid piece of news, from DW, none the less (sr:Посебно:Разлике/28366797‎)

It seems that block is wrong, and, while IP contributor went to several Wikipedias to add this piece of news to approprate articles, it does seem those are valid and useful contributions.

Ђидо (talk) 03:47, 16 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Ђидо The translations were bad quality (using machine translation software), and the edits themselves many times sourceless or using an unreliable source. Spamming across several Wikipedia languages (15+ in this case), especially if you are not using a source, is considered abuse.
If you want, you can restore the edit on srwiki, and right any grammar errors and use another source, or better yet write the news yourself. But most Wikis do not want machine translated text with questionable sources. If you've ever tried machine translating in to japanese for example, you would know that literally nothing will be correct. I hope this helps you understand. Estrellato (talk) 04:51, 16 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
At least, in case of our Wikipedia, translation was quite good, I didn't even notice that it was translated, and source is Deutsche Welle, quite good and respectful source. I think you jumped to conclusion about "cross-wiki spam". Reverting bad translations is one, but blocking the /64 span for that is, IMO, a tad excessive. Ђидо (talk) 05:25, 16 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
> But most Wikis do not want machine translated text with questionable sources
While that may be true, you should not assume policies of Wikipedias where you are not regular contributor. Ђидо (talk) 05:26, 16 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
The block happened namely due to cross-wiki poor machine translations. When it comes to IPv6 addresses, /64 is not excessive - it is generally the standard when it comes to blocking IPv6 addresses (see en:WP:64).
Anyways, the good part of a global block is that local wikis are able to exempt the global block locally, which both srwiki and other wikis are free to do if they wish. EPIC (talk) 05:33, 16 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Ђидо While the Serbian translation might have worked out fine, I can guarantee as a native speaker that both the Swedish and Spanish versions were severely subpar, and the user also did not include the DW source in most of his edits. Estrellato (talk) 07:05, 16 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Again, you are assuming that, because Swedish and Spanish Wikipedias got bad edit, all others got bad edit too? a) You do not need to know Serbian to see that source is valid. b) You should not be making judgements on quality of text in languages you are not native in. Ђидо (talk) 07:08, 16 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
And you are free to revert the text if you want it, and as the steward has already explained to you - cross-wiki poor machine translations is considered abuse.
And you are right, I do not know Serbian, but if I see so many faults in edits in languages that I do speak, I think you could see why I would assume the other edits contain various faults as well. Estrellato (talk) 07:15, 16 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
I refrain from reverting edits on other Wikipedias whose languages I do not understand, unless it is very clear vandalism (profanities in my native languages, and similar...). But you do you.
As for global lock, it still does seem excessive -- there were 11 edits, out of them 7 of them had DW source attached.
Global blocks should only be placed where a combination of page protection, local blocks, and other technical and non-technical measures would be ineffective or inefficient.
I will consider this conversation closed now.
Ђидо (talk) 07:20, 16 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
First of all, it was a global block, that expires after 24 hours. Not a Global lock. There's a huge difference. Second of all I would consider the Global blocks guideline of "otherwise blatantly disrupting multiple projects" very applicable in this case. Estrellato (talk) 07:34, 16 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
I do not particularly care for block status of this particular IP range, as I already fixed my Wikipedia to retain their contribution.
What brought me here is arbitrariness of ban. It seems a bit out of scope of guidelines in Global blocks: Machine translation is not specifically listed there, and I am not sure it falls under vandalism or spam.

Admin permission question

[edit]

Hello. I recently decided to try to revive hsb.wikt. Project is dead for many years now, but hopefully when I update it's technical side, scholars will agree to edit it again (atleast one of the editors was scholar). I already made some changes, but I also need to edit common.css/.js. Is there any chance to get an admin even tho there is no discussion about it as there are no editors at this moment? Sławobóg (talk) 19:57, 21 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Sławobóg: You can post a request for adminship locally. If there is a dedicated page for requesting adminship, then you should post it there, otherwise you can use the local village pump or the local equivalent to one. It should stay open for at least one week (but not for longer than about three weeks), there does not necessarily need to be any votes but as long as there are no objections then you can make a request at SRP once a week has passed. So, there does not need to be a local community, but there needs to be a local request. EPIC (talk) 20:05, 21 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Additionally, I want to note that to edit common.js/.css, you will need interface admin rights. You can apply for them at the same time as applying for sysop, or you can choose to only apply for IA (depends on if you will have use for sysop rights as well, or if you only want to edit the interface). EPIC (talk) 20:06, 21 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Oh okay, I thought admin can edit that too. Thank you for the answer. Sławobóg (talk) 20:17, 21 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

I sent you a message in "Steward requests/Miscellaneous". I think you have not seen it. Nevisand (talk) 11:38, 23 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

I did see it, I would still like to see further evidence/examples if possible? EPIC (talk) 11:41, 23 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@EPIC I understand, but since you do not know Persian, I am unsure how to explain it to you without causing confusion. Let me just give one example, and if it’s not enough, we can review other examples later:

In Persian, like in English, verbs have two tenses: “present tense” and “past tense.” In our discussion, these English phrases can be considered equivalent to the terms “«بن کنون» root of present tense” and “«بن‌گذشته» root of past tense” in Persian.

On this page, you can see that a template for the verb “خواستن” (to want) has been provided (within the table). However, when introducing the tenses of the verb, three tenses have been presented for “خواستن.” This is while in Persian, all verbs only have two tenses, and the third tense introduced here is a construct of that user’s thoughts. We do not have a “«بن آینده» root of future tense” in Persian. I do not think his approach is wrong, and perhaps creating a new language can be a very good thing; however, this language is not Persian, and such content should not be written in the main section related to a Persian word. Wiktionary is not a place for writing personal thoughts and ideas (unless a separate section for this purpose is defined).
Our user in question has edited the template “Template:Persian Conjugation” in such a way that the “«بن آینده» root of future tense” is defined for verbs (completely mechanical).
This template has been used for many pages for various verbs like “رفتن” (to go), “دیدن” (to see), “خوردن” (to eat), etc., which are all among the most commonly used verbs in Persian, and secondary information should not be shown to the audience about them. He is personally using Wiktionary for his own ideas (without any respect for the rights of the audience and other users).

I hope my explanations are sufficient and have not tired you. Nevisand (talk) 13:38, 23 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@EPIC Is there a problem? Nevisand (talk) 05:17, 25 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@EPIC The malicious user deletes his talk page, so that the moderators do not see his confessions of vandalism and personal abuse of the fawikt. See here. Nevisand (talk) 05:33, 25 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
I could bring it up with the others to see what they think. EPIC (talk) 05:52, 25 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@EPIC I am very grateful to you. I have one more request from you: Please also help about having a moderator for faWickt. There is an old user on Wikipedia and Wiktionary: "Darafsh". He is an administrator in Wikipedia. Sepas 🙏 Nevisand (talk) 06:00, 25 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
In that case a local request for adminship will need to be opened for the community to vote them in. EPIC (talk) 06:02, 25 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Block

[edit]

You're blocking me because I wanted to have a user locked globally, but I withdrew his report? Isn't the duration a bit... excessive? I would also have formulated the reason differently! Justman10000 (talk) 09:58, 26 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

I blocked you from editing SRG as you had showed several misuses of SRG after previous feedback as well as a warning, and you had gotten several similar criticism at your home wiki which showed that it is likely not language barrier being the problem. I am willing to reconsider or lower the block but I will have to talk to the other stews first. EPIC (talk) 10:43, 26 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
However, misuse is exaggerated! It would be misuse if I did it maliciously, which was not the case! But for the record:
  • Do not report IPs/accounts that show no, little or no recent activity
  • Do not report just any LTA account
  • Do not check for proxy/VPN with Spur, VPNAPI or similar services (only with Proxycheck)
So far correct? Justman10000 (talk) 15:28, 26 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
But in the Russian Wikipedia in particular, masses of IPs are blocked because of proxies! Where Proxycheck also says that they are not! Justman10000 (talk) 15:35, 26 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Justman10000: thank you for your interest in helping report vandalism, but we'll keep the duration for now. In the future, it'd likely be easier if you just didn't report IPs, and limited your reporting of accounts to those that are actively vandalizing cross-wiki. Vermont (🐿️🏳️‍🌈) 17:24, 28 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
You know that I primarily report IPs? Justman10000 (talk) 18:19, 28 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Justman10000: in part, that's the problem; many of your reports were of IPs which didn't need to be blocked. Would it be easier to limit your reports to accounts and IPs that are actively/recently vandalizing cross-wiki? Vermont (🐿️🏳️‍🌈) 18:59, 28 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Well, the primary IP reports are actually Proxys and VPNs Justman10000 (talk) 19:02, 28 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Mostly correct. You don't necessarily need to use Proxycheck.io, there are other reliable proxy checkers as well (IPHub for example), just avoid the unreliable ones.
Anyways, like mentioned I will have to bring it up with the other stews before reconsidering, as this had been discussed privately and supported by several stewards, before the block was implemented, so the decision was not taken on my own. Like I mentioned I would be okay with giving a second chance, but it's mostly up to the others at this point. EPIC (talk) 15:46, 26 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Can you give me an advice?

[edit]

Hi!

I have tried to make bar.wikipedia update the list of suggested licenses per bar:MediaWiki_Dischkrian:Licenses but with little success.

I first suggested to remove GFDL as a suggested license. Local admin thought it should be up to users to chose a license. Okay I have to accept that.

Then I suggested to do something because right now when users uploade a file as GFDL they get GFDL + the license upgrade that was valid to files uploaded before August 2009 bar:Vorlog:Bild-GFDL). I think it is unclear if the cc-by-sa-3.0 license is valid but even if it is then I do not think it good practice to sneak in an extra license during upload. So IF they (or some of them) want to keep GFDL as an option they should at least chose bar:Vorlog:Bild-GFDL-Neu. They could also make it a dual license with both GFDL and Cc-by-sa-4.0.

Thirdly Wikipedia upgraded license from 3.0 to 4.0 and I suggested to add that license too.

My question is if I can request stewards to upgrade if I make a post at their village pump and either get support or if there is no response? Or is practice not to do changes from meta if there is an admin that is sometimes active? MGA73 (talk) 14:39, 27 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi! If there are locals that can perform the task, standard practice is that we do not perform them unless they are inactive. If you obtain a local consensus it can of course be implemented, but at first hand it is up to the local administrators to do so, so in this case I think WikiBayer would be the right person to ask. EPIC (talk) 14:58, 27 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. I will make a suggestion and see what happens. --MGA73 (talk) 15:12, 27 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
