This commentary is the only series of Commentaries in modern history written by a single person on the entire Bible and aimed at layfolk .  Everyone needs a commentary on the Bible that they can understand and that answers their questions about the meaning of the text.  So I wrote one.

On the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the German monk and reformer Martin Luther posting his theses (October 31, 1517), the contributors of this volume invite us to expand our understanding of “the Reformation” by an examination of aspects of Reform which are lesser known than Luther to probe some less-explored corners of the Reformation. To be sure, Martin Luther himself receives attention in this volume. But the aim of this book is really to take the occasion provided by the increased attention paid to the Reformation during the year 2017 to explore other theologians, movements, and ideas. The expanding of the scholarly mind and opening up of new vistas often overshadowed by larger figures, like Luther, can only be good for the study of the Reformation and Early Modern era.

In a very careful study Kraus describes the Hebrew text of Genesis 1-4, its LXX rendition, how Jerome and the Latin Vulgate render the text, and how the passage is translated in German (by Luther) in English (by Tyndale) and by the Dutch State Translation. In this monograph, though, Kraus is not merely concerned with the Hebrew text and its rendition in various languages: she is interested in how the relationship between male and female are translated. Consequently, though the title of the book would lead readers to presume she investigates the entire span of Gen 1-4 in fact she focuses more narrowly on 1,16-28; 2,7.9.15-17, 2,18-25; 3,1-13; 3,14-24, and 4,1-2.17.25. As she states her purpose, “The questions that I shall address mainly concern variations between the Hebrew text and these translations and what they may reveal about the translators’ understanding of women, their role in the male-female relationship, and their place in society” (p. 1). Kraus sets the stage for her study by offering preliminary observations on the problem of translation. Her explication of the Hebrew text follows and is meticulous and tremendously done. Of the relationship between men and women from the point of view of the author “... we have here a relatively “innocent” androcentrism that somehow seems to be an essential part of the narrative” (p. 38) she says.
