എല്ലാവർഷവും സെപ്റ്റംബർ മാസത്തിലെ ഒന്നാം തിങ്കളാഴ്ച അമേരിക്കൻ ഐക്യനാടുകളിൽ പൊതു അവധിയായി ആഘോഷിക്കുന്ന ഒരു ദിവസമാണ് ആണ് തൊഴിലാളി ദിനം അഥവാ ലേബർ ഡേ. [1][2][3]സമൂഹത്തിന് അത്യന്താപേക്ഷിതമായ തൊഴിലാളികളെയും അവരുടെ കൂട്ടായ പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങളെയും ഈ ദിനം ആദരിക്കുന്നു. ലേബർ ഡേ വീക്കെൻഡ് എന്നറിയപ്പെടുന്ന നീണ്ടവരാന്തത്തിൻറെ തിങ്കളാഴ്ച കൂടിയാണിത്. ഇതിനെ ഒരു ഫെഡറൽ അവധി ദിനമായി അംഗീകരിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.
പത്തൊമ്പതാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിൻറെ തുടക്കത്തോടെ തൊഴിൽ സംഘടനകളും തൊഴിൽ പ്രസ്ഥാനങ്ങളും വളർന്നു. തൊഴിലാളി സംഘടനകൾ ഒരു തൊഴിൽ ദിനത്തിനായി വാദിച്ചു. 1888-ൽ ന്യൂയോർക്കിൽ വച്ച് 5 സെൻറ് ലേബർ യൂണിയനും നൈറ്റ് ഓഫ് ലേബർ ചേർന്ന് ഒരു പ്രകടനം നടത്തി. 1887 ഒറിഗോൺ ആണ് അമേരിക്കയിൽ ഇതിനെ ഔദ്യോഗികമായി അവധി ദിവസമായി അംഗീകരിച്ചത്. 1894 അമേരിക്കയിലെ 13 മൂന്ന് സംസ്ഥാനങ്ങളും ചേർന്ന് തൊഴിൽ ദിനം ആഘോഷിച്ചു.
കാനഡയിലെ തൊഴിലാളി ദിനവും സെപ്റ്റംബർ മാസത്തിലെ ഒന്നാം തിങ്കളാഴ്ചയാണ് ആഘോഷിക്കുന്നത്. അന്താരാഷ്ട്ര തൊഴിലാളി ദിനമായി മെയ് 1 ലോകമെമ്പാടും എൺപതിലധികം രാജ്യങ്ങൾ ആഘോഷിക്കുന്നു.

പത്തൊമ്പതാം നൂറ്റാണ്ടിന്റെ തുടക്കത്തോടെ കൂടി തൊഴിലാളി സംഘടനകളും തൊഴിലാളി പ്രസ്ഥാനങ്ങളും വളർന്നു എന്നിരുന്നാലും പല പ്രസ്ഥാനങ്ങളും അവരവരുടേതായ തൊഴിലാളി ദിനം ആഘോഷിക്കാനായി തിരഞ്ഞെടുത്തു. അമേരിക്കൻ ഐക്യനാടുകളിൽ, സെപ്റ്റംബറിൽ ഉള്ള അവധി ദിവസമായ തൊഴിലാളിദിനം ആദ്യമായി അവതരിപ്പിച്ചത് 1880 ലാണ്.
നിയമപരമായ അംഗീകാരം[തിരുത്തുക]
1887ൽ ഒറിഗൺ ആണ് തൊഴിലാളി ദിനത്തെ പൊതു അവധി ദിനമായി അംഗീകരിച്ച അമേരിക്കൻ സംസ്ഥാനം. 1894 അമേരിക്കയിലെ 13 സംസ്ഥാനങ്ങളും ചേർന്ന് ഫെഡറൽ അവധി ആയി ആഘോഷിച്ചു. എന്നിരുന്നാലും കേന്ദ്രഭരണ നിയമമനുസരിച്ച് കേന്ദ്രഭരണത്തിൽ ഉള്ള തൊഴിലാളികൾക്ക് മാത്രമാണ് ആണ് ഈ അവധി ബാധകമായിരുന്നത്. 1930 അവസാനത്തോടുകൂടി തൊഴിൽ സംഘടനകൾ ജോലിക്കാരെ അവധി ദിവസം കിട്ടുന്നതിനായി സമരം ചെയ്യിച്ചു. ക്രമേണ അമേരിക്കൻ ഐക്യനാടുകളിലെ എല്ലാ സംസ്ഥാനങ്ങളും ഡിസ്ട്രിക്റ്റ് ഓഫ് കൊളംബിയയും മറ്റു കേന്ദ്രഭരണപ്രദേശങ്ങളും തൊഴിലാളി ദിനത്തെ നിയമപ്രകാരമുള്ള അവധി ദിവസം ആക്കി.
