hey so uh. backhanded compliments are not compliments. stuff like "i liked this despite xy" or "i usually don't like this, but xy" or "i liked this except for xy" or "i liked this, but i wish you'd add/change xy" is not nice. i don't doubt that some people genuinely don't intend to be rude and don't even think about how these phrases might come across, but i can assure you that it often leaves a sour taste and a weird feeling that is not only unpleasant for authors, but also very easy to avoid. get this: there's simply no need to say these things when you can just as easily say "i liked this". and should you find yourself incapable of commenting on someone's fic without bringing up a negative point, being condescending, demanding or anything of that nature, i beg you to reevaluate your thought process and keep that uncomfortable insult-kind of compliment-concoction to yourself.
