My Ranking of Anne Rice’s Books

Full disclosure: My ranking is totally not based on the quality of AR’s writing (which I absolutely love); it’s just reflecting my own personal preferences for certain characters, plots, and themes. Some of her books I deliberately chose not to read; while some I only read once and didn’t care for them, hence their low rank on my list. (I saw the Feast of All Saints movie but never read the book.)

  • S Tier: The Witching Hour, The Vampire Armand, Taltos, The Wolf Gift, The Wolves of Midwinter, Blood Communion
  • A Tier: Cry to Heaven, Servant of the Bones, Blackwood Farm, Prince Lestat, Queen of the Damned, Memnoch the Devil
  • B Tier: Realms of Atlantis, The Vampire Lestat, Lasher
  • C Tier: Blood & Gold, Interview with the Vampire, The Mummy
  • D Tier: Blood Canticle, Tale of the Body Thief, Merrick, Angel Time, Of Love and Evil, Pandora, Vittorio, Violin

(I used the tier template here as my base.)

MY THOUGHTS (I tried not to spoil anything):

#sometimes the way someone sets up a poll tells you that they look at the world VERY differently than you do#VERY differently#like#i can’t even make sense of this#literally who thinks about music this way?#no offense op#i just cannot relate

(from @queenofattolia)

Before 2014 buddy wtf I’ll listen to music from before 1924.

(Also I love pop music from the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s.)

But, in fact, I’ll listen to music that was composed centuries ago??? That’s a normal thing that people who like “classical” music sometimes do. The national anthems of many countries are from the 19th century, or earlier, including the USA’s Star Spangled banner; France’s La Marseillaise is from the 18th. Like, I’m guessing that you will not listen to them recreationally (in case of La Marseillaise you are wrong not to do so, that’s a banger), but you have definitely heard “old” music.

Operas, musicals, operettas, symphonies, and various other compositions I do not know the proper name for. I’ll listen to them.

I’ll sing/hum Beethoven’s Das Blümchen Wunderhold (52/8). Sometimes I’ll even sing Schubert’s Die Forelle, Op. 32, D. 550, though that’s a lot more complicated melody and I’m more of a folk song person and only did 6 years of choir from ages 9-15, in primary school and that was 25 years ago, so perhaps I can be forgiven for my lapsed skills.

But anyway, many of you have probably heard takes on Vivaldi’s music, and rightly so, because Vivaldi composed things for violins that are true ear candy.

Can recommend broadening your musical horizons.

For fucks sake, at least check out Abba.

im not reading that but you should listen to king gizzard! theyre really really cool and awesome and from the past decade which makes them more Interesting to me if that makes sense lol

op, babygirl [Gender neutral] I am listening to Vivaldi four seasons [1700s] what do you mean you put the last one as “before 2014” there’s so much that falls into “before 2014” and there’s a difference between 2009 “before 2014” and 1723 “before 2014” and I am begging you go listen to some abba or queen or beastie boys or the Beatles or something

people keep saying this on my post but im really not interested. i dont need to explore more music lol i already know what i like

I only listen to stuff from the last month cause old things make me feel really sick and uncomfortable. Like its really weird and kind of creepy to imagine people listening to a 2023 song let alone 2022? Real weirdo stuff tbh. And if im being honest there wasmt even any good music until last year with taylors version. Its so dusty and not worth its spit in gold anymore but back then it was worth one good listen. But yeah idk people who listen to that boomer pre 2023 stuff make my skin crawl and should probably just rot

child made of cheese, i do believe you should be boiled alive for this horrid take of yours.

no lets hear them out

A little over half way through with qotd and I have a question about the fandom’s thoughts on Marius:

Why is he so hated? Because, from the knowledge and understanding I have of him, it feels like Armand is a favorite character amongst fans therefore the man who wronged him is hated.

I understand Marius has done disgusting things. In fact, he’s a pretty detestable guy in a lot of ways. But isn’t that the charm of Anne Rice books? These characters are fatally flawed, morally skewed, because she’s telling us a story of humanity through monsters. I feel like Marius embodies that incredibly well.

I understand if he makes you uncomfortable, because he makes me uncomfortable too. Just like Lestat and Gabrielle make me uncomfortable or even Louis and Claudia. Yet I love these characters, I love their dynamics and the complexities they display. Why is Marius the outlier here?? Am I still missing context??

The vast majority of AR’s vampires are P.O.S., but that’s usually what makes them fun–gothic horror/romance tends to make you root for the monster; human or otherwise. So my tolerance for BS is pretty high when reading TVC, cuz I know what I’m getting into.

With Marius, he lost SO MANY points for me when we learned that Marius KNEW Armand was still with the Children of Satan/Darkness, and LEFT HIM THERE.

I was gobsmacked.

Like–I get that Marius was burned to hell and back, and even with Akasha’s blood it took him forever to heal & recuperate enough to even think about investigating CoD/S. Esp. cuz just being an old AF vamp with the Queen’s blood doesn’t guarantee that you can’t get your arse jumped by a whole effing coven waving torches at you. Santino stole dang near all of Rhoshamandes’ fledglings, and Rhosh is like First Generation old AF and couldn’t do squat to get them back! So I totally get it–Marius knew it was highly likely that he’d lose again, and wanted to wait till he was stronger b4 storming the base by himself (neonate fledgling Bianca wasn’t gonna be any help).

But it was when he realized that Armand had become indoctrinated and Marius said he was disgusted/disappointed that Armand would rather live by their rules than Marius, where I was like eff this guy. What part of Armand being KIDNAPPED BY A CULT & TORTURED wasn’t ringing!? Marius knew Santino’s methods, and the cult’s twisted religious fanaticism (that Andrei/Amadeo ALREADY demonstrated), and how impossible they were to reason with!

Marius even knew to never breathe a word about TWMBK, cuz Armand was too effing young, and could never keep that a secret from the cult!

So why TF would he think the mere pittance of years (not even a decade) Armand spent with him would be more influential than CENTURIES spent with Santino & Alessandra & Rhosh’s fledglings!?

So yeah, by Blood and Gold Marius had pissed me off; I can’t stand that my way or the highway attitude, when he KNEW Armand wouldn’t’ve stood a chance against the coven. I was totally on Armand’s side in the divorce.

But I was also happy when Armand was finally able to make peace with Marius in the Prince Lestat trilogy; cuz it’d been painfully obvious seeing how obsessed he was over Les that he’d never gotten over Marius (since Les is basically Marius’ clone); and that a lot of his hangups were based on abandonment issues & trauma from knowing his Maker had forsaken him–just like God had forsaken vampires.

Okay so Jacob did a podcast with Naomi that was released today and on it Naomi said someone at AMC told her "dont ask Jacob about race" she went ahead and ignored them as she should because that's insane and stupid but it's not lost on me that she was then replaced by a white woman who asks the most useless questions in the world. Nevermind AMC granting access to weird racist pedo apologists like Maven who dont even like the show but still to get to show their whole ass to an acclaimed director like Levan Akin. And a gaggle of other white interviewers/journalists who either are utterly useless or downright racist/antiblack and weird in their articles. Something incredibly nasty is at work and even if I sort of trust Rolin, I will never, ever trust AMC and I hope the higher ups go straight to hell.

ca-suffit Answer:

jfc. thank u for telling me / us.

it starts at 1:05:25ish for the amc talk

I ran this through a transcriber:

NE: I was gonna make Jacob compliment the interview with the Vampire podcast on recorded media. And then we were gonna into it! You know, people came at the DMs and they said: where’s the podcast?! I said: I don’t know. I don’t know. And they just felt like, you know–and so I’m just trying to still engage with the community.
It’s an active, loving community. Okay, you really have a show that has a very beautiful, active, loving fanbase; and I even got a bit of that runoff, in a way that I didn’t know would happen! And I thought that was interesting for me.

JA: No, you were a big part of that, you know? You didn’t get runoff. But also, like, the thing that I really enjoyed as well about it is I think, like, you engaged with the show in the same way that I do. Like, it was really nice to talk to somebody who was, like, enjoying it in the same way that like it wasn’t like, I don’t know, you understood the weight of the show, and the storytelling and it’s all very like–it’s all very grandiose and beautifully written. But at the same time, it is hilarious. Like, it’s a funny show! And it’s a funny show by design as well. Yeah, I thought you did a beautiful job, and I wouldn’t have come back the second time if I didn’t.

NE: I know, I know! I know, it was so funny that one point they were like, before, like, the first time where it was like: okay, PLEASE don’t ask Jacob about race! And like, PLEASE, like, there was like all this stuff, and I go: Jacob and I gon’ be fine! Like, I literally say, you know, that’s like–we gon’ be fine! I said: he has been hurt in the past, I can imagine! But we will be fine.

JA: I mean, the thing is, as I was like: Don’t ask me, like, about race and Game of Thrones. Like, that’s very different. We could talk about race, when we’re talking about interview with a vampire. I can stand with it.

AB: Sometimes I forget about certain things. I think about the insanity that you like–like the number of questions like: oh, gray worm~! Now, in this season, in this episode what were you thinking when you were playing this? Like, the number of those kinds of questions you’ve had to have been asked are like insane. You had to like, like anyone who’s been part of like a giant, a giant thing has had to weather probably some of the worst questions in the world with a smile.

JA: I had pretty bad, bad interviews. Yeah. But like, again, I just feel like as I get a little bit older, and also like, and again, just to caveat, like, I’m not, I’m not someone that thinks like everybody needs to have children. I don’t like that for me personally, and I think as well, because my childhood was interesting. I’m like, I, having children is really put a lot of things in perspective for me. And I just like, I’m reaching a point with, with interviews–like, we’re hanging out with chatting. This is different. This doesn’t feel like like question answer thing. But with those question answer things, I’m like, it doesn’t matter. So I’m kind of going to just say what I want! Like I told you. Like I think that like, AMC and, and anybody else that I work with probably just like slightly butt clenched every time I sit down to do an interview because I’ve just like run out of that sort of self censorship that you need to do those things. And I don’t think anybody really wants that anyway. It’s boring. I hate when you hear the same answer. Yeah. Like I engage with, I love podcasts. I love like, I love learning everything I can about films when I watch them. And so I watch interviews sometimes. And I hate seeing the same interview. And it’s like it is boring and a nightmare getting asked the same question again and again and again and again. But I feel like then you could just answer a different way. Even if it comes to like–I haven’t got to this point yet, but I know Michael Gambon used to just lie. Like he just changes answers.

___________________

Ok, so it seems that Jacob is 100% on board with talking about race, but AMC “butt-clenches” every time it comes up, and THEY told interviewers not to ask him about race, cuz Jacob’s prone to go off and be uncensored & candid, and might say something people don’t like. Which is par for the frikkin course with Hollywood. The racist white money machine gon’ do what the racist white money machine gon’ do.

Even when they literally have Rolin Jones talking candidly about race

they’ll still dance around it and act like race isn’t being discussed, bull effing crap, that is an effing LIE, and I don’t GAF what they told Delainey to say, that white fans just love to quote to gaslight everyone into believing that this show and every effing FRAME isn’t about a BLACK vampire’s experiences. (Esp. when DELAINEY’s the one with TWO lines about race: Armand being darker-skinned than Lou, and Madeleine being a “weird white woman!”) Passive aggressively shading us whenever “that sector” of the fandom starts “looking too deeply into” the show, and telling people to just block liberally to “curate safe spaces” in the fandom for your fragile white feelings when ROLIN is the one who’s BEEN saying that RACE EFFING MATTERS.

I was so bummed when they got the producers to do the insider interviews in S2, cuz I missed how forthright RJ was, even when he put his foot in his mouth. He wrote this show with a Black lead and a Black Claudia and an Asian Armand for a effing reason, and it is so disappointing that journalists are so effing passe and like Jacob said: BORING. We’re not effing stupid.

dxxtruction:

So like, since Armand was not the one to plan, carry out without a level of coercion, and so perpetrate the anti-blackness of the trial (This is accredited to Santiago, those who came to it of their own will, and furthermore the Laws themselves used by them in this way).

And that Armand was forced to take the role in it he had. His anti-blackness rests more so on the fact he’s unwilling to admit to the true extent to his complicity in it - of which there was never any doubt he was complicit - and not so much to the degree of his own perpetration of it (within which he can only be at full fault for being overly-complicit in things). Even if all that complicity had been worked through and dealt with, hiding anything only makes worse his complicity, as it disregards the violence still contained within being complicit.

And even if it were to save his life, which is a valid right to be granted, to not reveal or confront the extent to ones complicity in anti-blackness leaves no room for both parties to move out of the cycle of that violence. So for that the right to protecting ones life can be morally questionable, especially if you’re sticking around said person(s). The victim(s) can not confront or have full ownership over the things that had happened to them, and be granted to act against that sort of cycle for themselves. And even if the other party were to privately learn from that mistake, never to repeat this complicity, there’s a lack of regard still, in this kind of instance, for the victim(s). Given they, in this case Louis, isn’t apart of that conversation, and can’t make his own discernments about what actions would be best for him to protect himself.

It assumes a level of ‘knowing better’ and 'making it less of a problem’ or 'keeping the peace’ over like speaking truth to power, and a right to cause disorder in order to enact meaningful justice against oppressive and violent forces. Which are just very anti-black sentiments to carry. (This very quickly became a post not about IWTV so sorry.)

One could argue complicity in the long run has far more dangerous effects than perpetration, and that’s also exactly because complicity is so widespread and varied. It has a wide margin of being excused or private, and individualistic in how its dealt with. This happens on a fairly daily basis. Some complicity to violence a fact of life in a culture of violence. And it is also sometimes done to take rightful violence off themselves (sometimes unrightfully), which makes dealing with it there difficult. A lot of which is not our fault, nor can we, except on a collective and wider-community level, do much meaningfully about it. But one taking the position should reflect, and better, do onto their best ability to enact for a greater good how they too are to various shades complicit in oppressive violence. Anti-black or otherwise.

vampirefest:

Hello, dear companions in darkness! We’re only a few days away from our Bloody Valentine !

Once again, we ask your help to determine once and for all:

What is the most romantic moment from the Vampire Chronicles? ❤️ 🥀 💌

Loustat’s San Francisco Reunion “Have you come back to me, as lovers say?”

Loumand’s love confession “I want you more than anything else in the world”

Devil’s Minion “You’re mine, beautiful boy”

Lesmand’s Cinderella moment at the ball in TVL

Loustat flying together at the end of QotD

Loumand “Do you see how ruthless I am in love?”

Nickistat “My lord, the wolfkiller”

Lesmand in MtD “You look good to me, you damnable little devil, good to love.”

Daniel’s turning “Say the word, my love, I’ll do it. We’ll be in hell together”

Loustat marriage proposal in ROA “Wither thou goest, I will go”

Other (let us know in the comments)

"Whither thou goest” for me – that was when Louis had finally made peace with everything it meant to love not only Lestat, but most importantly love himself–finally putting everything that had happened in Merrick to rest so that he could make a fresh start. LOUIS asked Lestat this time–there would be no more room to blame Les or anyone else for his choices from now on.

what the fuck

1. how the fuck did this post become so popular

2. everyone just commenting ‘QUERCHED’ is delightful

3. some people have suggested i use grammarly. this is letting the robots win and also would deprive me of the opportunity to complain about insignificant technical things instead of just wanting to scream over writing all the time

4. i use googledocs because i want access to my writing on multiple platforms and also because fuck microsoft

5. the difference between [its] and [it’s] is that [it’s] is always used as a shortened form of [it is] and [its] is used as the possessive of [it]. yes, this goes against the usual practice of just tacking on an [‘s] when you want to indicate ownership. yes, english is absolutely a trash language.
