Evan Williams sends one runner on the 914-mile round trip to Perth on Thursday

South Wales-based trainer Evan Williams hasn’t had a runner at Perth in the last five seasons but that looks set to change. It’s easy to see why he’s not a frequent visitor as it’s a whopping 914-mile round trip to the Scottish track. He’s set to send one runner up there on Thursday and it’s definitely one to put in the notebook. Check out our free tips page for daily content across British and Irish racing.

3.18 Perth

The Gypsy Davey made a very promising start to his career under rules, having gotten off the mark in the last of his four starts in Irish points. Williams’ gelding was a winner on his debut over hurdles and a couple of subsequent winners came out of the race.

He followed up under a penalty at Hereford next time and he made all the running to win by a length-and-a-half. The handicapper allotted him an opening mark of 110 off the back of those efforts which looked rather generous.

Evan Williams has seven winners from 41 runners here at Perth, which gives him a strike-rate of 17 per cent. That’s certainly healthy enough and the fact that it has been at least five seasons since he last had a runner suggests The Gypsy Davey isn’t being sent for a day out. It’s also worth noting that Williams has had just three runners in the last fortnight and two of those have won.

Connections wasted no time in sending him chasing and he made his chase and handicap debut at Market Rasen in May. Frankly he was a little disappointing back in third and even more so at Ffos Las next time. It would be dangerous to give up on him just yet however as he’s lightly raced enough to find further improvement.
