Not like that film was a one-off either.

I would like to add The Birdcage (1996) to this list of drag queen movies (mind you, it’s based on a French stage play from 1973).

image

Which starred Nathan Lane as a drag queen just two years after he had voice Pumba in “The Lion King”:

And we ESPECIALLY need to remember Victor Victoria from 1982 (during the REAGAN administration) which is SET IN THE 1930S and stars everyone’s favorite curtain-sewing nanny as a struggling soprano who decides to pretend to be a boy doing drag (DOUBLE THE DRAG FOR YOUR MONEY). I mean look at this photo:

Count Victor Grazinski isn’t putting up with your transphobia (or you being a dick to Robert Preston).

Unfortunately, the representation of drag and female impersonation (as it was often called pre-Stonewall) is scant in mainstream American cinema due to the Hayes Code. There are definitely more, but these are biggest, “family-friendly” names I can think who have starred in major motion pictures as drag performers.

I’m currently reading The Fellowship of the Ring for the first time and since I don’t have a particularly flash copy of it I’m enjoying adding little drawings here and there.

This is from three years ago but I realised I never posted these other two drawings.

As a trans guy who’s been working out for a few years now and has learned a lot about their body and building muscle and whatnot in the process, here’s something I don’t see mentioned, like ever.

Abs don’t really look Like That™ when they’re relaxed.

Here’s a few examples from a Reddit thread asking for pictures of people both flexing and not flexing their abs

image
image
image

I rarely see male body positivity posts in general but I’ve never seen this mentioned, and honestly? Call me stupid for it if you want, but I genuinely thought that super defined look was something that was achievable in a relaxed state, simply because I’ve never seen anything to the contrary.

As someone with body dysmorphia as well as dysphoria, you can imagine the damaging effects that might have had on my mental health trying by to achieve the impossible. I can only imagine how many other masculine folk out there could be struggling with the exact same thing.

Anyway like, this is mostly to point out for masculine folks that might be pushing themselves too hard, that you’re probably doing better than you realise.

Anecdotal stuff aside, this is an important thing for artists to remember as well! This is something I never realised despite being an artist that goes to figure drawing classes on the regular and having modelled for them myself- because of course people with abs are flexing for the poses! I was doing it too!

God, even when they exist, I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve seen those services cut for lack of funding, turn out to be abuse schemes by some religious group, be in conflict with a law that means they can’t actually help anyone…

Thinking about the food bank that gave out pallets of rotting grapes to families for Thanksgiving. And they actually were trying their best to get produce into the hands of people but they only could offer what they had been given and it was a shit ton of grapes that hadn’t sold.

Thinking about Job training that actually turned out to be a sweatshop where you folded towels for 15 cents an hour.

This king about the mental health office that refused to send my prescription to my pharmacy, lied about it and then threatened to call “my parole officer” when I was upset because most of their patients were court mandated to go there but I was not one of them. They had simply forgotten that and decided to play the same games they did to those who had no choice. As soon as they realized I did not have a parole officer they stopped playing around and immediately sent the prescription.

Thinking about how Ebt pays out less money than the minimum amount the government says is needed to live by almost half. How there’s so many tricks in the application to try to block you from getting aid you need.

Thinking about how many services are cut off from you if you have a criminal record and how being homeless is illegal in so many places.

Thinking about how the only job bank in my county shut down a decade ago in the middle of a recession.

Thinking about how rental assistance across the country have waiting lists years out.

Thinking about how employment resources is often getting someone to berate you while showing you the exact same Monster.com listing you could find online yourself and that’s it.

Thinking about all the studies that showed giving people money outright with no strings attached was the most effective way to uplift people out of poverty…

Also, maybe two of the things on that list actually help with poverty. So yes. When you are suffering from poverty (a lack of money), there will be loads of people, many in government, who assume that what you really lack is job training or mental health services.

While all of this is true, I also think it’s worth highlighting the not-insignificant amount of racism in the hateful comments. Their issue isn’t just that a popular or pretty girl likes anime, it’s that a black woman (especially an attractive one) can’t possibly be into anime. It just doesn’t compute, no matter how many black people, celebs or not, show up to cons or cosplay or even just talk about it. I also feel that a lot of the gatekeeping and dismissing her faves as mainstream falls into this category. They keep trying to push her back into the out-group, because from their perspective she can’t possibly be a real fan.

I mean “Black girl who was loud in class” isn’t a racist dogwhistle, it’s an air raid siren.
