𝗟𝗲𝘁'𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗶𝘁 𝗮 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗲𝘆… One hundred hours? Five hundred hours? A thousand maybe? How much time do you think it takes to determine where and how a wind turbine for an offshore wind farm can be installed or how and along which route across the seabed the (export) cables can be buried? Admittedly, it's not an easy task. That's why we'd like to tell you about it using a recent example.    In the Polish section of the Baltic Sea, our colleagues at Gardline carried out the necessary surveys prior to the realization of Ocean Wind’s offshore wind farm BC-Wind. With four specialist survey vessels Ocean Observer, Ocean Vantage, Horizon Geobay and the Horizon Geodiscovery, many measurements and analyses were carried out at the turbine locations and along the route of the future inter-array and export cables. The Ocean Observer conducted bathymetric and geophysical surveys to determine the exact water depth, map the shape of the seabed and characterise the sub-seabed geology at planned locations for the cables, wind turbine generators and associated foundations. Thereafter, the Ocean Observer conducted a shallow geotechnical survey along the export cable route to measure soil conditions for cable burial. The other three vessels were operating in the offshore wind farm array area focussing on gathering data for the design of the wind turbine generator foundations. This deep geotechnical site investigation is necessary to exactly determine the soil characteristics and soil layers. This crucial information is then used to determine what foundation type and size will be needed to support a wind turbine reaching more than 200 meters above the sea surface weighing thousands of tons.    The total duration of this offshore survey? More than 8,000 hours. So let’s call it a thorough job...   #boskalis #creatingnewhorizons #survey #bcwind #poland #gardline #horizongeosciences #oceanobserver #oceanvantage #horizongeobay #horizongeodiscovery #offshorewind #advancingtheenergytransition

𝗟𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗮𝗿𝗺 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗨𝗦 Every offshore project has its own peaks. For the transport and installation campaign for Ørsted and Eversource’s Revolution Wind offshore wind farm off the east coast of the United States, we reached one when our crane vessel Bokalift 2 successfully installed the largest foundation recently. This wind turbine foundation is 114 meters long and weighs 2,105 tons. Later this year, the Bokalift 2 will install two even larger foundations, but these serve a different purpose in the 704 MW offshore wind farm, which will provide Connecticut & Rhode Island with green power. They are needed to carry the two offshore substations.    Along the East Coast of the United States, Boskalis is working with a large number of specialized offshore vessels this year. In addition to the Bokalift 2, these include our crane vessel Bokalift 1, several semi-submersible heavy transport vessels and US vessels engaged in surveying, monitoring, and component transportation.    We congratulate our colleagues on reaching this impressive milestone. #boskalis #creatingnewhorizons #bokalift1 #bokalift2 #offshorewind #advancingtheenergytransition #unitedstates #revolutionwind

𝗚𝗶𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝟳 𝗰𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗽𝗶𝗲𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗮𝗿𝘁 After the Giant 7 successfully installed the first nearshore export cable for TenneT's 700 MW offshore wind farm Hollandse Kust (west Beta), our cable-laying vessel started this week on export cable number two. In other words, the artwork performed by the Giant 7, in close cooperation with our specialist burial sledge tool BSSIII, is repeated.   Two export cables are needed to connect the offshore wind farm to the onshore power grid. Boskalis' Giant 7 and BSSIII are ideally suited to install the cable in the shallow part of the North Sea, close to shore and also on the beach. About four kilometers offshore, our cable-laying vessel Ndurance takes over the installation of the export cable. The trenches for this export cable in the seabed are dredged by our trailing suction hopper dredger Gateway. Following the installation of the export cables, Boskalis will install a 9-kilometer-long 66kV interconnector cable between the TenneT projects Hollandse Kust (west Alpha) and Hollandse Kust (west Beta) offshore connector platforms.   #boskalis #creatingnewhorizons #giant7 #hollandsekustwestbeta #cableinstallation #advancingtheenergytransition

𝗥𝗼𝗰𝗸 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 What many probably do not know is that in preparation for the installation of an offshore wind farm, a number of activities need to take place. One of these key preparation activities is rock installation. For that aim, our subsea rock installation vessel Rockpiper sailed ‘ahead of the troops’ earlier this year prior to the current installation campaign. The Rockpiper prepared for the offshore wind farm installation activities by our crane vessel Bokalift 2. And so the Rockpiper literally carried out the groundwork for the installation of the turbine foundations.   We highly appreciate the collaboration with Dexter/QSL for the rock work activities. And we wish all vessels involved good luck with the execution of this historic project!   #boskalis #creatingnewhorizons #rockpiper #unitedstates #subsearockinstallation #revolutionwind #offshorewind #energytransition #bokalift2

𝗪𝗲 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗼𝘂𝗿 ‘𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗲’ 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻 Today we celebrate World Ocean Day. A day on which, among other things, we reflect on healthy and clean oceans. As global dredging and marine experts, the oceans and beaches are our natural working environment, which is why we make every effort to treat ‘our global office’ in the best possible way.   One way to keep our oceans healthy is by keeping our beaches clean and raising awareness about this important topic. That is why in 2013 we joined forces with the North Sea Foundation (Stichting De Noordzee) to organise the annual Boskalis Beach Cleanup Tour in which the entire Dutch North Sea coast is being cleaned by volunteers including Boskalis colleagues and their families. This initiative also inspired our colleagues at many locations across the world to organise local beach cleanups. In recent years, hundreds of colleagues have helped clean up litter from beaches in Kenya, the Maldives, Oman, Bangladesh, the Philippines, United Arab Emirates, Denmark, Germany and the UK, among others. We thank these colleagues, as well as our clients and partners who joined them for their commitment to keeping our oceans healthy and clean!   #boskalis #creatingnewhorizons #worldoceanday #beachcleanup

𝗔 𝗿𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗱i𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗮 𝘃𝘂𝗹𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝘀𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 The Omringdijk on Vlieland protects the residents of the Dutch Wadden island against the sea. Currently, this dike does not meet the national water safety requirements. And so extreme storms, expected again from October, could cause rocks to be knocked out of the revetment, creating a hole in the dike.   To prevent this, Boskalis is working on the reinforcement of this dike on Vlieland as part of Rijkswaterstaat's High Water Protection Program. This is the largest Dutch dike reinforcement operation since the Delta Works and designed to prevent flooding in the Netherlands. Once the work is completed, the dike will be able to withstand the sea water - which continues to rise every year and thus poses an increasing threat to the low-lying Netherlands - for the next fifty years. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘆?! With the energy transition in full swing, the turbine foundations for offshore wind farms are more needed then ever. As a result, transporting monopiles is becoming an increasing challenge. With our extensive fleet of impressive heavy transport vessels, Boskalis is able to carry multiple monopiles in a single voyage.   Our semi-submersible heavy transport vessel Blue Marlin is ideally suited for this type of transport and took this discipline to a next level recently. Thanks to an earlier widening of the deck to 63 meters, the vessel is able to transport as many as twenty (!) monopiles for the Eoliennes en Mer Iles d'Yeu et de Noirmoutier offshore wind farm in France. A record, even for our versatile fleet!   After unloading the twenty foundations in the port of La Rochelle, the Blue Marlin is sailing back to Southeast Asia to load another twenty monopiles for the French offshore wind farm. Meanwhile, sister vessel Black Marlin is also underway for a second load of monopiles for Eoliennes en Mer Iles d'Yeu et de Noirmoutier offshore wind farm. On board the Black Marlin there is place for eleven monopiles. 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗮𝗴𝗼? Every company has its own highlights. A unique project, the naming of a new vessel or 'just' a special moment to dwell on. One of our 2023 highlights began exactly one year ago today. On 31 May 2023, after a long mobilization in the Netherlands and Djibouti, our colleagues of Boskalis subsidiary SMIT Salvage set foot on the FSO Safer: a decaying 47-year-old, single-hulled oil tanker with 180 million liters of oil on board, moored off Yemen’s Red Sea coast.   Those who followed the media in the weeks and months that followed know the outcome. After an intensive salvage operation coordinated by the United Nations, our SMIT Salvage colleagues managed to transfer the oil from the FSO Safer to a replacement tanker, averting a huge environmental disaster.   In the video, we look back on this special project.   #boskalis #creatingnewhorizons #smitsalvage #fsosafer #oiltransfer #avertenvironmentaldisaster
