FutureWater’s key expertise is in the field of quantitative methods, based on simulation models, geographic information systems and satellite observations. FutureWater has offices in Wageningen (Netherlands) and in Cartagena (Spain). In countries with substantial activities satellite offices are established: Maputo (Mozambique), Vientiane (Laos) and Meru (Kenya).

💧 India Water Week 2024 💧 📣Yesterday, representing FutureWater, Utrecht University, and the Université de Fribourg - Universität Freiburg and TERI - The Energy and Resources Institute, I had the opportunity to present our work on "Developing a Glacio-Hydrological, Water allocation model and IWRM Plan for the Bhagirathi River Basin, Uttarakhand, India" during India Water Week 2024. 🌍 Climate Change Training: Strengthening Capacity of National and Local Stakeholders in Tajikistan 🌍 🖥️Over the last month, FutureWater and Utrecht University conducted specialized training on "Assessing the impacts of climate change on the cryosphere and water resources in the Zarafshon River Basin" in the Netherlands (Wageningen) and Tajikistan (Dushanbe). Using advanced tools like the #SPHY and #WEAP models, hydrologists, climate experts, researchers, and water managers from across #Tajikistan developed critical skills for sustainable #water resource management. During the roadshow, we showcased the newly developed operational GLOW system for the Maputo and Umbeluzi River Basins to project stakeholders, including the Joint River Basin Authorities - Project Board, Mozambique’s Regional Administration of Waters in the South (ARA-Sul), and the Inkomati-Usuthu (IUCMA) and Pongola-Umzimkhulu (PUCMA) Catchment Management Agencies. 🌍 💧 The ‘GLObal Water Availability Forecasting Service to support Water Security’ (GLOW) project addresses water availability and demand challenges in the abovementioned transboundary river basins. By integrating weather forecasts, hydrological and water resources models (PCR-GLOBWB and WEAP), along with the HydroNET visualization and data integration platform, GLOW delivers near real-time, short-term forecasted (10 days) and seasonal forecasted (6 months) water availability information. We are excited to announce that after two years of collaboration with FutureWater, Emanti Management, Partners for Water and the Joint River Basin Authorities - Project Board, the GLOW project is now ready for operational implementation. GLOW will contribute to improved water management and transboundary catchment collaboration by providing daily and seasonal water availability forecasts, powerful visualizations in HydroNET - Your Online Water Control Room, and a centralized platform for water quantity data. Managing transboundary water resources calls for harmonizing approaches amongst riparian states. The Joint River Basin Authorities - Project Board is part of the GLOW Project which utilizes modern modeling systems and cutting edge technologies to forecast water availability based on existing demands and usage. The JRBA-PB continues to partner with other leaders in water management to leverage technology in order to better serve its stakeholders and execute its mandate.

This European Union and BMZ co-financed initiative, implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, will be followed by in-country training on climate change impacts and a glacier data expedition in September. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and FutureWater have embarked on a collaborative project to address climate change challenges in Turkmenistan. An initial delegation visit to Ashgabat in early July involved consultations with key government ministries to outline the project’s scope and objectives.
