In the past two weeks, the GLOW project team - FutureWater, HydroLogic, and Emanti Management - completed a roadshow across Mozambique, Eswatini, and South Africa. During the roadshow, we showcased the newly developed operational GLOW system for the Maputo and Umbeluzi River Basins to project stakeholders, including the Joint River Basin Authorities - Project Board, Mozambique’s Regional Administration of Waters in the South (ARA-Sul), and the Inkomati-Usuthu (IUCMA) and Pongola-Umzimkhulu (PUCMA) Catchment Management Agencies. 🌍 💧
The ‘GLObal Water Availability Forecasting Service to support Water Security’ (GLOW) project addresses water availability and demand challenges in the abovementioned transboundary river basins. By integrating weather forecasts, hydrological and water resources models (PCR-GLOBWB and WEAP), along with the HydroNET visualization and data integration platform, GLOW delivers near real-time, short-term forecasted (10 days) and seasonal forecasted (6 months) water availability information. This service will help water managers and decision-makers mitigate droughts, and floodings, and enhance transboundary governance while supporting SDGs 2, 6, and 13. 🌱 ♻ 🌡
𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐅𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐋𝐎𝐖 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞:
🌦️ Weather Forecasts: Short-term (10 days) and seasonal (6 months) for proactive water management.
💧 Reservoir Water Availability: Real-time and forecasted reservoir levels for optimized dam operations.
🌊 River Discharge Predictions: Essential for managing transboundary resources and meeting ecological flow requirements.
🏞️ Water Demand & Supply Forecasts: Insights across the domestic, agricultural, and industrial sectors, highlighting potential water shortages.
📊 Visualization and Data Integration Tools: User-friendly dashboards offering near real-time data for improved decision-making.
🚨 Early Warnings: Timely alerts for droughts, floods, and water shortages.
🔄 Transboundary Governance: Supports collaboration for managing shared water resources.
💡 The roadshow allowed us to showcase the operational GLOW system, gather feedback, and discuss enhancements to ensure GLOW meets the evolving needs of regional stakeholders. We're excited to continue refining GLOW as we address real-world water security challenges! 🚀
