Security is an issue that has been at the "heart" of International Relations since its inception as an academic discipline. Despite its importance, both academically and empirically, it remains a controversial concept, without the academic community having come up with a commonly accepted definition. Coming to the more specific issue of National Security, its modern view includes a multitude of dimensions and threats, which extend beyond the military security with which it was intertwined during the Cold War. This paper approaches the three main dimensions of National Security (military, economic and political security), both in the general context of the nation-state and in the specific country in question. In the field of military security, the Intelligence Services are called upon to clarify both the magnitude of the military power of the adversary states and the intention to use it. In particular, Greece, which is in a constant military confrontation with its eastern neighbors, needs the intelligence support that will allow it, to face this threat both in terms of military power and political intentions. The importance of financial security has multiplied in modern times. Intelligence Services through financial espionage at its various levels (macroeconomic, microeconomic, financial counterintelligence) are called upon to play an important role in defending it. Greece, which has been in a difficult economic situation for the last decade and is connected to the global economic developments, can benefit the most from the provision of financial information. Finally, the Intelligence Services ensure the organizational stability of the states and through their action assist the decision-making by the leaders and in general the implementation of the political aspirations. On the other hand intelligence services have features that could pose a threat to democracy itself. Modern states have responded to this problem by creating a multi-level control system. The failures of the past, but also the threats that Greece faces have demonstrated the need of reforming the Greek Intelligence Services in order for them to become more effective in defending the country's National Security.
