While 'freedom', 'equality' and 'humanity' are often considered central concepts to committed scholarship, these same concepts are also being deployed globally in legitimizing contemporary wars. Now, more than ever, there is an urgent need to reformulate the notion of commitment as inherently intertwined with various forms of complicity. The essays collected in this volume look at ways in which commitment can be 'saved' as a critical practice and also uncover instances in which commitment fails to operate properly, becoming an ethical rhetoric that serves the reconfirmation of the status quo. How can we distinguish different forms and norms of commitment? What to do when commitment becomes a desirable fetish or a good in itself, when commitment becomes, so to speak, 'commitment kitsch'? Including contributions from acclaimed young scholars and internationally recognized theorists such as Sara Ahmed, Mieke Bal, Timothy Brennan, Elleke Boehmer and Rey Chow, this volume aims to open up a new realm where such pertinent questions can be discussed.

Een multicultureel Vlaanderen is geen keuze maar een realiteit. Vele Vlamingen smaken graag de aangeboden consumptie-producten van de multiculturele samenleving, van etnische restaurants tot wereldmuziek, maar spuwen de mensen die ze produceren uit omdat ze ‘onze cultuur’ niet zouden delen. Het debat over multicultureel Vlaanderen gaat in feite over (de grenzen van) ‘de Vlaamse cultuur’. Het is tevens een debat dat tegenstellingen tussen conservatief en progressief, tussen rechts en links, overschrijdt.

Een leeuw in een kooi wijzigt op radicale wijze de termen waarin het debat tot nu toe gevoerd is. Het geeft een baanbrekend perspectief op de multiculturele samenleving in Vlaanderen en bespreekt een reeks heikele thema’s gaande van religie, feminisme, kolonialisme, klasse en identiteitspolitiek. Hierbij wordt de controverse niet uit de weg gegaan. Zes redacteurs leggen de armoede van het huidige linkse referentiekader over cultuur, identiteit en racisme bloot. Ze nemen standpunten op de korrel van ‘wie het goed bedoelt’ en delven aspecten van het Vlaamse verleden op die tot nu toe verdoken zijn gebleven, om het multiculturele heden beter te begrijpen. Gedreven door een groot engagement en steunend op een uitgebreide academische expertise schetsen de redakteurs een weinig verhullend beeld van het multiculturele Vlaanderen. Exploring the intersections of memory, gender, and the postcolonial, Colonial Memory explores the phenomenon of colonial memory through the specific genre of women’s travel writing. Building on criticism of memory and travel writing, Sarah De Mul seeks to open Dutch literature to postcolonial themes and concepts and to insert the history of the Dutch colonies and its critical recollection into the traditionally Anglophone-dominated field of postcolonial studies.

This article examines the complex intertwinements of feminism, anti-colonial Marxism and imperialism in the work of the recent Literature Nobel Prize winner Doris Lessing, particularly in her writings on colonial Africa and the travelogue African Laughter. The article outlines the implications of these intersections for the representation of Zimbabwe against some political, aesthetic and epistemological developments in Lessing's oeuvre. Through a reading of African Laughter, the article argues that a crucial tension is at stake between Lessing's political project of giving voice to black Zimbabweans and the western female protagonist as the authoritative subject of this project. The aim is to render an innovative perspective of Doris Lessing's status as a feminist icon, which she gained in the wake of her acclaimed novel The Golden Notebook (1962), by proceeding from postcolonial feminist scholarship.

This article focuses on ‘tempo doeloe’, a mode of nostalgia to the Dutch East Indies (colonial Indonesia) in contemporary Dutch literature. The phrase ‘tempo doeloe’ denotes ‘the good old days’ in Pasar Malay, the colloquial colonial language that was used in the Dutch East Indies. The article examines some of the historically contingent dimensions, mnemonic features and ideological complexities of tempo doeloe. Particular attention is devoted, first, to how tempo doeloe is constitutive of a memorial community of repatriates in the Netherlands, and second, to how notions of authenticity and beauty are critically imbued with this particular type of nostalgia. The aim is to gain a better insight into tempo doeloe as a historically contingent Dutch mode of nostalgia for empire and to review some of the recent theoretical perspectives on possible intersections between memory and the postcolonial.

Literature, Language, and Multiculturalism in Scandinavia and the Low Countries presents a ground-breaking comparative approach to the study of multicultural literature. Focusing on the development of migration literature in Sweden, Denmark, Flanders, and the Netherlands, the volume argues that the political and institutional preconditions for the development of ‘multicultural’ literatures are still given within the frame of the nation-state. As a consequence, both the field of ‘migration literature’ and the (multi-)lingual quality of literary texts are shaped differently in each state and in each language area. The volume delineates the development of multicultural literature in Scandinavia and the Low Countries as a function of the specific language situations in these countries as well as the various political, institutional, and discursive contexts.

This book not only offers a comprehensive theoretical and methodological analysis of multilingualism and multicultural literature, but also provides overviews sketching the discourse on multiculturalism, language and the development of the literary field in Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Flanders.
