πŸ™πŸ½ Game 5 Is Tonight: Let's Go Guards + Cleveland's Meat Loaf Connection

Cleveland Daily: Catch up quickly on what's happening across Greater Cleveland today.

Cleveland sports fans loved Josh Naylor's "rock the baby" home run and Myles Garrett getting his record-setting sack on Sunday, but we didn't love that both the Guardians and the Browns lost. The Guardians still have hope and a good chance of pulling off an upset in Game 5 at Yankee Stadium tonight. Fans fear the Browns may be hopeless right now, though.

What else is new in Cleveland to start your Monday?

  • Meat Loaf's Bat Out of Hell has a significant Cleveland connection.
  • A University Hospitals nurse saved a man's life in the Muni Lot last week.
  • Vandals keep hitting Holy Cross cemetery and defacing final resting places.

🐐 Also, an adorable goat needs a home. And the very last link in our Chatter section will take you to a video of Yankees fans losing a fight with Guardians fans this weekend. 🀣

1) The Guardians lost Game 4 Sunday night, 4-2, sending the American League Division Series back to New York with the series tied 2-2. Game 5 at Yankee Stadium will start at 7:07 p.m. Monday. The Guardians threatened but could not mount another thrilling come-from-behind victory as they did in the ninth inning of Game 3 Saturday.

  • Fans loved Josh Naylor's solo home run in the fourth inning as well as his "rock the baby" trot around the bases and gestures at Yankee pitcher Gerrit Cole, who after the game called Naylor's ribbing "cute."
  • This was Cal Quantrill's first loss as a starting pitcher in Progressive Field. In 34 Cleveland starts, he'd won 14 games until Sunday.
  • Cleveland.com's survey of parking lot rates for the weekend's big games showed the lowest at $40 (900 Tower garage and Erie Court garage) and $42 (for overnight valet at The 9) and the highest at $100 (East 9th Street across from the players entrance).
  • Terry Francona says: "If you'd have told me back in March we'd have signed up to play Game 5 in New York ... I might jog to New York. ... I'm excited."
  • Aaron Civale will be the starting pitcher for the Guardians. All hands will be on deck for relief, too. Jameson Tallion, who lost Game 2 in New York, is expected on the mound for the Yankees.

2) Did you know about Meat Loaf's Cleveland connection? His most famous album β€” 1977's Bat Out of Hell β€” was produced and released on Cleveland International Records by Steve Popovich, who had left Epic Records and returned home to Cleveland to start his own label. A panel discussion for the album's 45th anniversary will take place Oct. 21 with Meat Loaf's daughter Pearl Aday, singer Ellen Foley whose voice is featured on "Paradise by the Dashboard Light," Steve Popovich Jr. and others at the Music Box Supper Club.

3) A cardiac nurse from University Hospitals St. John Medical Center in Westlake saved a man's life after he collapsed in the Cleveland Muni Lot while tailgating prior to the Browns-Chargers game a week ago. Helen Ramsey of Amherst ran to the man's side and began CPR. During her fourth cycle of compressions, the heart attack sufferer was revived. Paramedics took him to a nearby hospital and he recovered. β€œThe feeling of his breath coming into his lungs as I’m compressing, it was an awesome feeling, it was nice that it was a good outcome,” Ramsey said. This is the third time she's saved someone's life while out in the community.

4) Myles Garrett is the new Cleveland Browns sack leader, breaking the record of 62 held by Clay Matthews during the first quarter of Sunday's Patriots game. Garrett strip sacked quarterback Bailey Zappe. Garrett now has 62.5 sacks. This was his fourth sack of the season. Garrett got another sack later in the game and hurt his shoulder on the play. In his entire Browns career, Clay Matthews actually had 75 sacks, which started in 1978, but they didn't become an officially recorded statistic until 1982 so 13 of them didn't "count".

5) Several episodes of vandalism have been reported in recent weeks at Holy Cross Cemetery in Brook Park. Orange, black and green spray paint was used to deface statues and altars with profanity and symbols. A statue of Jesus was broken. Inside one mausoleum, flowers were destroyed and a table knocked over. Other mausoleums were also defaced and donation money was stolen.

  • Eliza is a good listener: "OK, how could you possibly resist these puppy dog eyes from Eliza?! Eliza is a resilient little lady. When she arrived at the kennel, she was skin and bones and understandably a shy and unsure about her surroundings. But with a little time and TLC from our staff and volunteers, Eliza has begun to fill out and blossom!" (City Dogs Cleveland via Facebook)
  • The power of love: "In 2018, I shared a personal story with WKYC Channel 3 - Cleveland viewers about my nephew Jordan, who was born nearly three months premature and is on the #autism spectrum. The story was about how his mother taught our entire family how to love Jordan in a way where he could thrive. Fast forward to 2022, and Jordan is a freshman in high school thriving! He went to homecoming over the weekend and when I saw him all dressed up in his suit with his friends I immediately started crying. It's amazing what love and acceptance can do in the life of a child." (Danielle Wiggins of 3News WKYC via Facebook)
