When American Pie first hit theaters in 1999, the coming-of-age film was quickly crowned a cult classic.

Following the story of four high school seniors who make a pact to lose their virginity by prom night, the raunchy teen comedy spawned three sequels, five direct-to-video spinoffs and many cultural references.

Not only that, American Pie also catapulted the careers of budding actors Jason Biggs, Seann William Scott, Alyson Hannigan and Natasha Lyonne and saw a resurgence for beloved stars and future Emmy winners Eugene Levy and Jennifer Coolidge.

Ahead of the 25th anniversary, Biggs shared his perspective on the pop culture phenomenon and its fans.

"What that time has given me is perspective and real appreciation for the impact that the movie has had around the world. Wherever I travel, people want to talk to me about it," Biggs told PEOPLE on June 16, 2024. "There's now another one or two generations of people that have seen the movie, identified with the movie, liked the movie. It's been a really, really special thing for me."

The actor also noted the "special" relationship he has with American Pie fans, who always offer a "positive interaction" and "nothing but good things to say."

Biggs added that he enjoys how people talk about American Pie "with such nostalgia."

"Now, of course, there are new fans of the movie, which is really cool and special, but there are people of a certain age, meaning my age, that have grown up with this movie and with me," Biggs continued. "And so there's a real special connection that I have with them, and it's very cool to be here 25 years later and still talking about it."

Decades after making audiences laugh at hilariously awkward moments — including the infamous pie scene — see what the ensemble cast has been up to since the film's release on July 9, 1999.

In 2005, she was hospitalized for various ailments and has since maintained a relatively private life. Chuck Sherman lied about losing his virginity in the original American Pie but still managed to have sway over women with his "Sherminator" alter ego.

Chris Owen, who played Chuck, hit the jackpot of teen films in the late-'90s, appearing in Can't Hardly Wait (1998), She's All That (1999), October Sky (1999) and American Pie (1999) all in a row.

He followed that success with several National Lampoon films, including 2002's National Lampoon's Van Wilder. Owen took on a more serious role in 2007's The Mist. He later reprised the role of Chuck in American Pie 2 and American Reunion.

Besides Eugene, Owen is the only actor from the first film to appear in one of the direct-to-video American Pie Presents spinoffs, 2005's American Pie Presents: Band Camp.

While she has kept busy in film, she has had more success on the small screen in series like Six Feet Under, Chicago Fire, South of Hell, American Horror Story: Murder House and American Horror Story: Apocalypse.

The Czech exchange student Nadia was the object of Jim's affection and schemes. Who could forget the snowball effect of Jim recording Nadia undressing without her permission? This leads to a viral video of him embarrassing himself while trying to hook up with her, forcing Nadia's host family to send her back to Europe before prom after they watch the video.

It was a breakthrough role for Shannon Elizabeth, who followed American Pie with Scary Movie (2000), Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001), Thirteen Ghosts (2001), a memorable cameo as "Harriet, the sexy one" in Love Actually (2003) and Jay and Silent Bob Reboot (2019).
