Description

I am using the beta feature Discussion Tool, and this happened yesterday:

talk_pages_404.png (577×1 px, 57 KB)

It is hard to describe any detail: I clicked on the Reply button, I typed the text into the Visual version of the tool, then clicked on the Reply (actually Save or Publish) button. The error message appeared instead of saving the message.

Reloading the whole page and clicking again on the Reply button solved the issue (and as a positive experience, the tool recovered the typed in text, which was an earlier request.)

Event Timeline

For context, that looks like this page: https://hu.wikipedia.org/wiki/Szerkesztővita:Samat#Translations_of_the_Growth_tools

I don't know what could cause this. Normally, RESTBase returns a 404 error if the page has been deleted (this doesn't seem to be the case) or if we send a non-existent revid/etag (which shouldn't be possible).

I tried finding this error in the logs in case there was anything interesting, but I can't find any entry for this page: https://logstash.wikimedia.org/goto/fe4b4bdd17f80796359b8a77a1d6c4f5

If you kept the tab open for a very long time before posting a reply, then this could be the same bug as T235822: VisualEditor can't save edits (HTTP 404 error) when it was open for more than 24 hours while editing an old revision or after switching from wikitext.

If we hear something more on this we will investigate further.

también a mi me ha pasado cuando yo uso visualeditor

Not sure this qualifies as UBN. It's a few isolated cases as far as I can tell.

Were you by any chance editing when the page was deleted?

(Traducido usando google) ¿Fue por casualidad editando cuando se eliminó la página?

@RhinosF1 Well spotted, that is almost certainly what happened.

@RodneyAraujo I created a new task about your problem: T263962. I think it's different from this one.

matmarex renamed this task from Error contacting the Parsoid/RESTBase server (HTTP 404) to "Error contacting the Parsoid/RESTBase server (HTTP 404)" in reply tool for unknown reason.Sep 27 2020, 9:03 PM

@RodneyAraujo: Please do not assign tasks to people, and please do not change the Priority field. See https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Bug_management/Phabricator_etiquette . Thanks.

If you kept the tab open for a very long time before posting a reply, then this could be the same bug as T235822: VisualEditor can't save edits (HTTP 404 error) when it was open for more than 24 hours while editing an old revision or after switching from wikitext.

This specific scenario has been fixed by the changes from T252558: Create a low bandwidth reply API using parser.php/modifier.php (September 2020).

Although, as seen in T270346, there's a small but steady trickle of these errors (they have the code 'apierror-visualeditor-docserver-http'). The reason is still unknown.

This error message can no longer occur on Wikimedia wikis after T320529. If the underlying problem still exists, it will now result in a better error message. Hopefully it doesn't, but if you see any weird error messages, please file another bug.
