MediaViewer background blends into black backgrounded images, altering the user's perception of the image's proportions
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

Example: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamic_State_of_Iraq_and_the_Levant#/media/File:AQMI_Flag.svg

The image is actually much closer to being square, but because both the background of MediaViewer and of the image are black, the image appears to be of different dimensions than it was the article view, which is very confusing.

I think this is a fairly low priority issue.

I think this is a fringe issue; flags are pretty much the only use case where we care about the dimensions of the image.

See also the issue of the checkered background of transparent images annoying some people (I thought we had a bug for that, but I can't find any) - one approach proposed in T59620 that would solve both that and this is to detect the dominant color (or dominant edge color) of the image and use the opposite of that for the background. That's a fairly complex change though.

Agreed. I don't think this is a big priority, but I wanted to get the task in the backlog at least. :-)

Mass-removing the Multimedia tag from MediaViewer tasks, as this is now being worked on by the Reading department, not Editing's Multimedia team.
