Zwycięzcą został reprezentant Czechosłowacji Emil Zátopek , który na tych igrzyskach zwyciężył również w biegu na 10 000 metrów i w biegu maratońskim . W finale ustanowił rekord olimpijski uzyskując czas 14:06,6[1] .
