  • 🌊 We’re providing underwater services to maritime authorities in Belgium and France as part of the ongoing Multipurpose Maritime Operation (MMO) in La Manche and Southern North Sea. EMSA's service of observation-class Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROV) offers additional capabilities to national authorities for increased awareness under the sea’s surface. During the recent deployment in Cherbourg, our ROV service was used by the French Navy across a range of different scenarios: 🔍 Inspecting shipwrecks up close 🌊 Recovering exercise mannequins ⚓ Detecting underwater threats in shallow waters The deployment also demonstrated the potential synergy between divers and ROV, including how unmanned tools can effectively support underwater operations. 🤝 This EMSA-led MMO runs until mid-September with the cooperation of Belgian and French maritime authorities, and supported by our sister agency, the European Fisheries Control Agency (EFCA). #MMO #coastguardcooperation #ROV

Over the past six years, our Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) services have supported 16 EU and EFTA Member States across nearly 60 operations – in a total of over 7000 operational days. EMSA first started exploring the potential of RPAS technology for the civil maritime domain nearly a decade ago. Since then, our RPAS capacities have assisted maritime authorities at Member State level in an ever-growing number of tasks – from multipurpose maritime surveillance to emissions monitoring. Our new report – EMSA RPAS services for maritime surveillance – shows the evolution of this unique service, summarising key outcomes from the past six operational years, and evaluating the use of RPAS in the maritime domain. And it seeks to share insights with maritime authorities interested in establishing their own RPAS capabilities for maritime surveillance. Access the report here: https://lnkd.in/dsy9tPSe

🌊🚢 As part of our Multipurpose Maritime Operation (MMO) in La Manche and Southern North Sea, an awareness session was delivered to the participating authorities in Belgium on a key feature of EMSA’s Integrated Maritime Services – Automated Behaviour Monitoring (ABM). 💡 Through this service, automatically generated alerts of anomalous ship behaviour are available to coast guard authorities, thereby enhancing their maritime situational awareness both for time critical situations as well as historical analysis. ⚠️ A vessel’s sudden change of heading in a Traffic Separation Scheme, or a vessel drifting too close to a shore or oil terminal, are just a couple of examples of behaviours which could trigger automatic alerts for the competent national authorities. 🇧🇪 🇫🇷 Enhanced support of this kind is being provided to Belgium and France on a daily basis and throughout the MMO, which runs until 15 September, in cooperation with the European Fisheries Control Agency - EFCA. ⚓ The support provided branches out across six different coast guard functions including maritime safety, ship casualty and maritime assistance, fisheries inspection and control maritime environmental protection and response, search and rescue, and monitoring and surveillance. 🔗 Read more about EMSA’s ABM service: https://lnkd.in/d5srP6cV #MMO #ABM #coastguardcooperation

This summer our RPAS is supporting Spanish authorities in the Port of Barcelona with emissions monitoring.   The specially equipped RPAS is being used to measure exhaust plumes from ships, helping ensure compliance with EU and IMO regulations on sulphur content in marine fuels.   Data from the RPAS is fed into the THETIS-EU platform, managed by EMSA, which records and exchanges the results of individual compliance verifications performed by Member States under the Sulphur Directive. This can trigger follow-up inspections of individual vessels.   Nearly a quarter of all maritime trade in Spain flows through the Port of Barcelona, which is one of the largest commercial and industrial centres in the Mediterranean region.   As well as emissions monitoring, the RPAS can help port authorities to detect issues like oil spills and floating debris in the port’s internal waters, anchorage area and North and South access channels.   Find out more about our RPAS service https://lnkd.in/dg_5EWNu
