Abstract
Examines the HIV/AIDS pandemic and the global response.
Description
As of 1992, more than 10 million people worldwide were infected with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). Although scientists knew how HIV was transmitted, the virus continued to spread unimpeded across borders and continents, giving rise to the deadliest pandemic the world has faced since the bubonic plague ravaged medieval Europe. Exceptionally high infection rates in Southeast Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa continued to take their toll on local populations, and threatened to spread to Europe and the rest of the developed world. In this episode, U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Antonia Novello and Jim Graham of the Whitman-Walker Clinic discuss the efforts of American aid programs aimed at preventing and treating the disease, as well as steps the United States and international community can take to stem the spread of AIDS and HIV.
