Meet the artist

Welcome to my art blog! My name is Robin and I am an illustrator who loves matcha lattes, my cat Perrin, and my collection of plants!

I started this tumblr when I was studying scientific illustration back in 2013, and after I graduated I worked as a layout artist in animation for several years. I am currently spending half my time as a layout supervisor, and the other half working on personal projects.

Thank you for all the likes, reblogs, follows, and kind messages. I really appreciate the support, and I look forward to sharing more art with you soon!

Tablet: Wacom Cintiq 13HD
Program: Clip Studio Paint
Brush: Basic hard round brush, but to be fancy I made it slightly oval

I’ve been feeling like posting more lately so here’s a WIP!

Finally got into the right frame of mind to start working on the next piece for the geometric cats calendar. Who else is not a fan of their messy-as-hell sketch phase? :D

I sometimes procrastinate starting on a new piece, because I know the initial sketch is not going to look as good as I’ve pictured in my mind. But I force myself to put some scribbles down and it gets easier from there.

I wanted to do one that was pretty much all Hollow Knight haha. Used to be pretty big into game series like Assassin’s Creed and Dragon Age, but these days it’s shorter indie games with a beautiful and distinct art style.

I made these two cute charms/keychains based on elements in my art. It’s nice to have some small and quick projects after a large time-consuming one. The next idea I have for this will be a strawberry.

But for now, back to working on another geometric cat illustration!

legendarykerfuffle asked:

hello! i really liked your hollow knight cross stitch. you mentioned that you glued a piece of mounting board in between the layers. for the layer in the front with the foliage, did you have to cut out a similar shape from the mounting board?

Thank you!

For the front foliage, I have a long rectangular piece of mounting board along the bottom. The plastic canvas is stiff enough that it’s fine for the top parts to not need the backing (they’re just hanging over empty space).

Here is the pattern and info for my Hollow Knight layered cross stitch, if you’d like to make one yourself!

Total canvas size is 92 W x 64 H.

Images 3 to 6 are the layers from back to front.

The black outline from the plastic canvas will be the black outline around the sections, instead of actual stitches (see prev post).

The dark grey bars at the bottom are filler stitches with a random neutral colour. I did this to keep the thickness of the whole layer consistent, even if it’s a bit extra work.

In between each layer, I glued a piece of mounting board to give the layers depth.

How I have been cross stitching on plastic canvas:

  1. I use 14 ct black plastic canvas (you can find it at Amazon or Michael’s) because I like having black outlines for my art. You can use clear canvas for no outlines. I cut out a piece that’s larger than the final size, and cross stitch on it using 3 strands.
  2. I trim the canvas leaving a line of plastic that encloses the stitches, then I trim the corners so they’re not sharp. If you’re using clear canvas, this is all you need to do and you won’t need Step 3.
  3. I use black thread to do an overhand stitch around the whole edge. This gives the edge the same look and feel as the rest of the piece, instead of looking like black plastic.

For my day job I am a 2D layout supervisor, and here is the show I’ve been working on!

Thank you for all the love on my Hollow Knight cross stitch! I enjoyed it so much that I think I will make all 4 of the options in the poll, so next up is the Knight and Hornet hanging out in Greenpath, overlooking the waterfalls. (I want a more chill friendly vibe than having them fight, haha.)

Some people have also asked how I did the layers, so I will make a small guide for that in the next couple days!

Progress of the first two layers! The (bad) lighting is making the bg look more blue, but it really is green, I swear.

I am also learning that hot glue is not in fact the magical glue that holds everything together, but weld bond glue sure is.
