The Varangian contribution to the formation of the ancient Russian state is highly
evaluated in the national scholarly tradition, more specifi cally, there are practically
no doubts about the Scandinavian origin of the Rurik dynasty. However, there is
a certain contradiction in the so-called Varangian problem: given a huge body of
archaeological data unambiguously confi rming the active Varangian presence in Rus
in the 10th–11th centuries, we can only have at our disposal a very limited amount
of the linguistic traces of ethnic and cultural connections between Russians and
Scandinavians at that time.
This book presents an attempt at the historical and philological study in the
fi eld of the cultural contacts between Scandinavia and Rus before the very end of the
Viking age. The image of the ideal ruler, the practice of gift exchange, the concepts of
the status and inheritance rights of illegitimate children, a narrative about ancestors
as a way of characterizing descendants, and similarities between personal names,
nicknames and solemn eulogies — these are, to name just a few, the intense points of
this interaction which became the focus of our study.

This study focuses on the interaction between Russian prin¬ces and nomadic Cumans (Qipčaqs, Polovcians). The starting point of our work are names and family ties of indi¬vi¬dual Cumans captured in the oldest Russian chronicles which re¬pre¬sent "minimum quanta" of the historical information. N. M. Ka¬ramzin in the notes to his History drew attention to the fact that some of the names of the Cuman families repre¬sen¬tatives are obviously associated with Russia. These "Rus¬sian" names, in our opinion, are the most important indicator of the cross-dynastic interaction, contacts between Russia and the nomadic world. What is the composition of the corpus of Russian names of Cuman elite representatives? In essence, it consists of only a very limited number of an¬throponyms: Yuri (George), Daniil, Roman, Gleb, Yaropolk, Da¬vyd (?), Vasili. It is crucial that all of these names are re¬gu¬lar¬ly used as dynastic by the Rurikids in the 11th — begin¬ning of 13th century. Most of the names, borrowed by Cumans from Rus¬sians, are Christian names. At the same time attention is drawn to the non-trivial dis¬tribution reflected in the information of sources; while dis¬co¬vering Christian names of some representatives of the highest Cuman nobility, we do not find any mention of the fact that any of the owners of these names, their fathers and other close male relatives took baptism. On the contrary, they are con¬sistently characterized as pagans. Moreover, ancient chro¬nicles contain no reports of Cuman princes taking bap¬tism until the beginning of the Tataro-Mongol invasion. Interestingly, Christian names of those few Cumans of whose conversion we can speak more or less confidently can¬not be found in any records, whether it is a Cuman wife of a Russian prince, an anonymous monk of Kiev-Pechersk Mona¬ste¬ry, an author of an inscription on the church wall or a power¬ful Cuman Prince, who was baptized on the eve of the Battle of the Kalka. In our work we have sought to demonstrate that the cause of the appearence of Russian names in this environ¬ment is a cross-dynastic, intergenic anthroponymic communi¬ca¬tion, a desire to consolidate the alliance with the Russian princes, but not a conversion of the male representatives of the Cuman elite. The set of "Russian" names used by Cumans allows us to determine the circle of their "anthroponymical donors" among the Rurikids and identify a number of rules and laws on which this communication in the language of names was carried out.

The phenomenon of polynomy, whereby a single person can possess quite a list of given names, is very characteristic of Rus society throughout the medieval era. In the twelfth century just as well as the seventeenth, a person could either have gone under one and the same personal name for their whole life, or else accumulated three, four, or even five names. Some of these names were given at birth and some only in later years. In general, newly acquired names would not cancel out earlier ones: not infrequently, all would remain integral attributes of their bearer until death and sometimes have at least a degree of posthumous significance as well. Notably, however, multiple names would hardly ever occur all together in the same communicative situation and would only sporadically appear together within the same written text. Untangling these anthroponymic processes and situations is not easy, even if they involve figures who have received attention by medieval chroniclers and modern historians. Sometimes a degree of confusion surrounds even the various names of tsars. Especially unlucky in this respect were the Muscovite rulers of the pre-Romanov era, Boris Godunov and Vasilii Shuiskii, who is the hero of this paper.

This article presents a fresh interpretation of the chronicle account concerning the wardens of the Church of Holy Myrrhbearers, featuring a side chapel dedicated to St. Cyril, which was constructed in Pskov in 1546. The focus is placed on the cult of personal patron saints and their influence on the architectural design of the church. The analysis is conducted within

The article discusses the basic model of the dual naming system among lay Christians in medieval Rus’, suggesting identification of the rules and ideas behind the name-choosing and demonstrating the genetic continuity between the Christian dual naming and the more traditional type of dual naming in which the same person had one name from the Christian calendar of saints and the other name of pagan origin. A general overview of the medieval Russian system of multiple names is given.

The symbolic meaning of the choice of the date for her monastic vows is regarded in a broad context of a peculiar language of names and dates whose popularity peaked by the days of Ivan the Terrible. This choice played a special role not only in the family history of princes of Staritsa, but also in both verbal and non-verbal dialogue they maintained with the monarchic sovereign of Muscovy for decades. The question why it was namely the 5th of August in summer of 1563 when the Princess’s worldly life ended, is related to the existence of an elaborate political plan that did not lose its relevance even after most of the family of the Czar’s cousin had perished in 1569.

Историко- ономастический анализ текста надписи на кресте не только позволяет уверенно идентифицировать владельца этого драгоценного образчика ювелирного искусства начала XVII в., но и высказать ряд догадок об обстоятельствах совершения пожертвования, а также уточнить наши сведения о практиках имянаречения, принятых на Руси в XVI столетии / The article demonstrates how onomastic studies can help with interpretation of the key events of Russian history. The central figure of the paper is Czar Vasili IV of Russia (Vasili Ivanovich Shuisky): the fi rst part of the paper focuses on the attribution of a valuable altar cross from the early 17th c., which has to do with the Christian binominality of this monarch, while the second part deals with the semiotics of the Czar’s deposition from the anthroponymic perspective. The votive inscription on the eight-pointed reliquary cross made of gilded silver gilded and decorated with stamped and carved sacred images on its front side says that the cross was donated to the Suzdal Monastery of the Intercession of Our Lady in 1603/04, with the style of figurative images, foliage pattern and the high quality of work clearly indicate the Moscow origin of this liturgical object. Until now, the identity of the donator was believed to be unclear, although the inscription is readable and contains both the names and all information necessary for identification. Many people of Medieval Rus’ had two lay Christian names — today this idea comes as less of surprise to researchers as it used to a decade earlier, yet the tradition of lay
Christian binominality is still to be described and analyzed. Studying specifi c cases sometimes requires almost detective investigation, and challenges faced by a researcher are not incidental: they are rooted in the very ways how this system of lay Christian binominality functioned in the pre-Petrine Rus’: the same person could appear under one name in one case and under the other name in another, and sometimes it is really challenging to fi nd the crossover points allowing to identify, say, Cosmas, servant of God with Prince Dmitry Mikhailovich Pozharsky. The historical and onomastic analysis of the inscription on the cross not only allows to reliably identify the owner of this precious specimen of early 17th-century jewellery but also to make some guesses about the circumstances of donation and to clarify our evidence of naming practices characteristic of the 16th-century Russia.

This paper takes a new look at the “anthroponymical portfolio” of Boris Godunov and his family. Insufficient familiarity with the structure of the Medieval Russian polyonymy (that is, the practice of using many names for the same person) has been known to lead not only to the introduction of redundant and never-existing people to research papers, but also to real people taking redundant, imaginary names, which they did not and often could not have taken in reality. This paper takes a look at both the names the tsar had, without a doubt, and the names under which he existed in previous research (Boris, Bogolep, Iakov, Bogdan, Theodot). Special attention is given to the personal patron saints’ cult in Godunov’s family, mostly to St. Theodotus. Some problems of attribution and dating of several artifacts are raised

This work, using as example the telling case of the naming of the member of the Golovin noble family, describes the general principles of the selection of two secular Christian names for the same person and discusses the possibility of the interdependence of these two anthroponyms. This work demonstrates to what extent the names were determined by the date of the birth of the child, as well as notes the general role of the calendar in personal piety of the people of the Russian Middle Ages. Particular attention is paid to the figures of namesake saints, who become the personal heavenly patrons of the named ones and the icons associated with the birthday of a particular person.

In the medieval Russian anthroponymic system, a lay person could have several names simultaneously. The public name of a person was not always their baptismal forename. Also, recent research has shown that the full sets of personal names of some of the Russian tsars and their relatives are still unknown to us, not to mention the names of the ruling elite of the state. These unknown names, however, were extremely important to their bearers – these were the names used in confessions, weddings, and funeral services; patronal icon would be commissioned and churches built in honor of the name of one’s saint and namesake. The baptismal forename, essentially a mystery to us, was actually perceived as the main and true name of an individual. In this paper we investigate the names of one of the most wellknown people of the second half of the 16th century – Andrej Ščelkalov, a man of rather humble birth but of great power, a long-lived administrator called “the chancellor,” “the minister” or even “the tsar” by his contemporaries. Moreover, we attempt to discuss this particular name-giving case within the broader anthroponymic context of the era.

The present paper offers a rethinking of inscriptions and images on the famous
artifact known as “Prince Ivan Khvorostinin’s reliquary”. We are interested both in the texts inscribed directly on various parts of this objects and those potentially linked with some of its elements. Contrary to the widely accepted opinion, the article suggests seeing this reliquary not as an attribute of state power, but as a family relic of the Khvorostinins. From this perspective, the important tools of research are the history of the cult of personal saint patrons and the history of secular Christian binominality.

The life story of Tsar Boris Godunov, one of the most intriguing characters of Late Medieval Rus’, is still surrounded by unsolved enigmas, obscure gaps, and omissions. The date of his birth
is to yet be verified and introduced into scholarly discourse. This paper presents evidence that, if interpreted appropriately, we argue it enables us to estimate Godunov’s birthday. Accurate dating is important for many reasons, for instance it helps us to contextualize and broaden our understanding of everyday life at the ruling house, the cult of personal patron saints, and aristocratic naming conventions in Rus’ between the 14th and the 17th centuries.

European diplomatic sources from the early 17th century provide us with previously unaccounted for data on Russian history. Thanks to a report by Georg Tectander, a member of Emperor Rudolph ii’s mission to Russia, we can now establish the exact date of birth for Boris Godunov. An unpublished manuscript by Tectander’s contemporary and compatriot, Baron Heinrich von Logau, who visited the Tsardom of Russia at the same time, allows us to verify this date as well as to broaden our perspective on everyday life and ceremonial of the royal court, on the Tsar’s personal piety and on the status of the ancient tradition of celebrating birthdays and name days. Moreover, analyzing various calendars used by the diplomats of that era allows us to ascertain that one’s preference for the Gregorian or Julian calendar was not defined by national strategies only but remained a matter of personal choice that was subject to change during one’s life

This paper takes a look at both the names the tsar had, without a doubt, and the names under which he existed in previous research (Boris, Bogolep, Iakov, Bogdan, Theodot). This article discusses the phenomenon of using two Christian names by one and the same person among the laity in medieval Russia. The main attention is paid to the late stage of this tradition in the dynasty of Rurikids and in their inner circle. The article poses the following questions: what are the Christian names of Tsar Fedor and Tsarina Irina, what saints they venerated as their holy patrons and on what day was Irina Godunova born?

В статье показано, каким образом имена собственные становятся инструментом планирования будущего при наречении первых и последних Рюриковичей на престоле, бояр братьев Морозовых и безвестных контрагентов многочисленных грамот, написанных в XVI–XVII столетии / The paper dwells on various onomastic means that ensured family unity within a generation in Medieval Rus’, highlighting, fi rst and foremost, the unity between brothers. The important research tools are the history of personal patronal saints cult and the fact that many Christians of the pre-Petrine time uses to have two names: a baptismal one, as well as an additional name from the church calendar. Particular emphasis is put on intentional semantics play of non-Christian names, on the one hand, and on working with recurring Christian anthroponyms in a family, on the other hand. The article introduces a term anthroponymical castling, which is supposed to explain the cases common in Medieval Times where the members of the family carried the same names and underline the systemic nature of this phenomenon. ‘The language of names’ allows to demonstrate ambitions of the family, invoke its history, whether actual or fi ctional, highlight various aspects of family piety and current political situation. The paper demonstrates how given names acted as a means of planning when they were given to the fi rst and the last of the Rurikids to rule on the Russian throne; to the Morozov brothers, the boyars; and to some other obscure participants of numerous events described in the 16th and 17th centuries

This paper dwells upon an uncommon precedent of choice and functioning of a name of a 17th century member of the Turgenev family. This individual case draws our attention to certain common processes of Russian onomastics evolution in the era of the fi rst Romanov tsars
and the early Petrine period. One can see how religious and cultural orientation of the monarchs fi rst infl uences their immediate circle and then — the society as a whole. The name-choosing tradition refl ects, to some extent, the dominant trends of that era, but remains an original
phenomenon evolving in accordance with its own patterns. The paper focuses on exotic and/or deliberately constructed personal names that could have existed as monastic or baptismal names but rarely made their way into lay documents. Their emergence in everyday use attests
to a general overhaul of polyonymy system where a single individual could have received up to 4 or 5 personal names, both Christian and non-Christian, both lay and monastic, during their lifetime. Furthermore, the paper demonstrates that the name Partimofey (Portimofey) could have
emerged under two diff erent patterns. Moreover, the reason behind the two equally plausible hypotheses concerning this name is not some indecisiveness on part of the researchers, but rather
the specifi cs of the transitional stage when the tradition itself had not yet adapted to the options brought to the foreground. Back then, the authors of lay documents were faced with a challenge of writing down unusual names, previously unknown to everyday life, and the form Partimofey was a bizarre outcome of domesticating the unknown

The paper discusses the general principle of the dynastic onomasticon of the pre-Mongol Rurikids, which was closedness: the pagan names of the princes were not supposed to be used by anyone outside of the ruling house. The present work covers the whole range of actual and phantom deviations from this principle, presenting an analysis of what might make these deviations acceptable. The right to a certain name, the functioning of the names and their transfer to non-dynastic strata are very closely linked with the power structure and the interaction between the princely family and their elite milieu. The subject of the ruler’s kinship (either consanguinity, affinity or fictive kinship) as a tool of construction of power relationships, the subject of the political mobility of the nobles and their role in conflicts between princes, the role of kinship in government — all these and many other controversial issues of pre-Mongol Russian history can be quite fruitfully studied from the onomastic perspective. The answer to the question of how, when and why such personal names as Sudislav, Viacheslav, Rogvolod or Iaropolk could suddenly become available for non-princely children, is often crucial for studies dealing with the various alliances, conflicts and long-term strategies of pre-Mongol Old Rus’.

(Any scholar, or indeed any interested reader, concerned with the cultural history of Rus’ in the 10th to 13th centuries has inevitably to face a kind of paradox: while the role of Scandinavians in the political and ecclesiastical life of pre-Mongol Rus’ was far from insignificant, the evidence from native Russian
sources concerning this group of immigrants is scarce and quite fragmented. Against this background, any coherent sequence of elements on Russian–Scandinavian relations in extant Old Russian written sources acquires particular importance. Extraordinarily, across the entirety of the narrative space of the 10th to 12th centuries, Rurikids aside, there is just a single family whose Varangian origins are identified explicitly, whose close affinities with Scandinavia are noted, and for whom biographical details of three men representing three generations are given. These three men are Yakun the Varangian, his nephew Shimon and one of Shimon’s sons, named George. A very curious series of coincidences was therefore needed to leave records of at least three generations of a Scandinavian family in Old Russian manuscripts – and records containing unambiguous indications of their Varangian origin. This ongoing investigation into Varangian genealogy seems to support the suggestion that some of the chronicle’s more complex and enigmatic stories may echo oral histories of aristocratic families whose descendants, in one way or another, had personal ties to

Involvement in power could be embodied not only in the way the girl was named at birth, but also in changing her name in marriage and/or in monastic tonsure. Particular attention is paid to the family situation of Dmitry Ivanovich Godunov, the uncle of Tsarina Irina and Tsar Boris, one of the most influential people of that time. The family of Dmitriy Ivanovich is known, in particular, for the richest donations of specimens of artistic sewing, and it is traditionally assumed that his wives supervised the workshops where these precious objects were made. However, the ideas about the matrimonial life of Dmitriy Godunov were still very intricate and controversial, and, accordingly, the reliable attribution of artifacts that left his house was impossible. This work is designed to fill this gap.

This paper takes a new look at the “anthroponymical dossier” of Boris Godunov and his family. Theodotus. Some problems of attribution and dating of several artifacts are raised.

The present paper offers a rethinking of inscriptions and images on the famous artifact known as “Prince Ivan Khvorostinin’s reliquary”.
