Short Biography

Prof Andy Lowe is a British-Australian scientist based at the University of Adelaide. He is a global expert on plants and trees, particularly the management of genetic, biological and ecosystem resources, publishing over 300 papers and books in his field and supervising over 100 technical staff and higher degree students. He has discovered lost forests, developed DNA traceability tools that are helping to eliminate illegally logged timber from global supply chains, developed climate resilient restoration programs, and served the United Nation’s Office of Drugs and Crime and is a lead author of the Intergovernmental Platform for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services – Land Degradation and Restoration report. Andy has helped secure over a quarter of a billion dollars worth of research funding in his field and is an experienced and respected research leader, board member, as well as mid-career mentor. Andy has served as Scientist in Residence for The Australian Financial Review and is passionate about communicating the societal impact of the science he gratefully receives to undertake his work from public and private sources.
