Graduate of Medicine (1981) at FCM—Faculty of Medical Sciences of Pernambuco, University of Pernambuco, MSc in Community Health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (1987), and MPH in Public Health—Epidemiology at the School of Public Health, Emory University (1991). Measuring abdominal obesity to evaluate cardiovascular health risk and improve prevention; 2. establishing a causal association between a food additive, diacetyl, and bronchiolitis obliterans; and 3. evaluating community-based physical activity interventions in Brazil. Currently funded research: 1. type two diabetes prevention and 2. study on the associations between heavy metals and cardiometabolic diseases. Fellow of the American College of Epidemiology. Over 160 publications. H-index = 46. Three nomination certificates for the CDC-ATDSDR Charles C. Shepard Science Award.
