Geographer. Full professor in Physical Geography at the Department of Geography and Tourism (Faculty of Letters - University of Coimbra) and researcher at the Center for Studies in Geography and Spatial Planning (CEGOT), where he coordinates the Group 1 - Nature and environmental dynamics. He is also foreign collaborator, in Brazil, of several Research Groups. He was director of the Faculty of Letters of the University of Coimbra (2004-2006), Director of the Department of Geography, President of the Portuguese Association of Geomorphologists (2003-2005; 2013-15); President of the National Commission of Geography (2012-2016) and Co-ordinator of the Centre of Studies on Geography and Territorial Planning – CEGOT (Universities of Coimbra, Oporto and Minho; 2013-2016). Throughout more than 40 years of university career he has developed work in the areas of the Geomorphology (Karst and fluvial), the Environmental Studies (Risks and vulnerabilities; Geoheritage) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) applied to the Territorial Management, having developed his work in the Central Portugal, but also in Brazil, Argentina, Cabo Verde, Angola and Mozambique. He published more than 350 papers, supervised 23 PhD Thesis and belonged to the editorial board of more than 20 scientific journals,
