Information

Martin Ostoja-Starzewski (Master’s and Ph.D., McGill University) has research interests in the (thermo)mechanics of random and fractal media; advanced continuum theories; and aerospace, biophysical, and geophysical applications. His paper “Universal elastic anisotropy index” replaced the Zener index to become a standard characterization of new compounds and materials. He has(co-)authored 230+ journal papers and 4 books: 1. Microstructural Randomness and Scaling in Mechanics of Materials, CRC Press (2008); 2. Thermoelasticity with Finite Wave Speeds, Oxford University Press (2009); 3. Tensor-Valued Random Fields for Continuum Physics, Cambridge University Press (2019); 4. Random Fields of Piezoelectricity and Piezomagnetism, Springer (2020). He also (co-)edited 15 books/journal special issues and co-organized numerous meetings. His work has been cited 10,000+ times. He serves as Editor-in-Chief for the Journal of Thermal Stresses, Editor of Acta Mechanica, and Chair Managing Editor of Mathematics and Mechanics of Complex Systems, besides being a member of the editorial boards of 10+ other journals. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the American Academy of Mechanics, and the Society of Engineering Science, and an Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. In 2012 he was the Timoshenko Distinguished Visitor at Stanford University. In 2018 he received the Worcester Reed Warner Medal (2018).
