Dr. Sawaid Abbas

Dr. Sawaid Abbas is an Assistant Professor at the Centre for Geographical Information Systems, University of the Punjab, Lahore, Pakistan. He received his Ph.D. degree from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2017. His main research focuses on the smart sensing nexus for climate and development. His thematic focus spans water scarcity, food security, climate risks, and environmental monitoring with an emphasis on the Asia-Pacific region, including Pakistan and China. His key work on ecology involves tropical and subtropical secondary forest succession, mangroves, floods, droughts, and rangelands. In the urban environment, his work on Smart Sensing Technologies received a team award for Outstanding Achievement in Technology Transfer. He brings a unique combination of data science and communicating knowledge by involving regional stakeholders to translate scientific knowledge into policies and sustainable management practices. He recently studied coastal ecosystems and their responses to climate and anthropogenic stressors in the Asia-Pacific region. The Living Indus – Investing in Ecological Restoration has become a new focus of interest for him, addressing sustainability challenges related to food security and river basin management. Besides this, he is also an editorial board member of Frontiers in Environmental Informatics and Remote Sensing, Remote Sensing Applications: Society and Environment, Frontiers in Remote Sensing, and editing special issues in Remote Sensing.
