Dr Rades is Professor of Radiation Oncology and Director of the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Lübeck and the University Medical Center Schleswig-Holstein, Campus Lübeck, Germany. He was appointed Professor in 2008 at the University of Hamburg. He then moved to the University of Lübeck and the University Medical Center Schleswig-Holstein, Campus Lübeck, where he was appointed Head of the Department of Radiation Oncology in 2010 and Director of the Department in 2021. In addition to Radiation Oncology, Dr Rades received his Board Certification in Palliative Medicine in 2006. Dr Rades has received several national and international awards including two honorary professorships in Vietnam, and was nominated Fellow of the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) and honorary member of several national scientific societies. He is an editorial board member of more than 10 international peer-reviewed journals and has authored or co-authored more than 500 peer-reviewed publications. Moreover, he has been an invited speaker and given teaching lectures at major scientific meetings including ASCO, ASTRO, ECCO, ESMO, and ESTRO. His major areas of clinical work and research include palliative radiotherapy (metastatic disease), the treatment of head-and-neck cancers and lung cancers, and radio-chemotherapy of different cancer types. Of particular concern to him is the development of treatments, tailored to the specific needs of the individual cancer patient.
