During the course of the seventeenth century, the Villa d’Este in Tivoli did not receive from its administrators the worthy attention it needed, and the restoration interventions promoted in 1605 by Cardinal Alessandro d’Este were already long gone in the 1618 engravings by Dominique Barriere. The decline of the building and its gardens, already attested from the mid-seventeenth century, becomes even more accentuated, as demonstrated by the drawings, engravings and paintings of the time.
The essay therefore aims to establish a dialogue between the stories of visitors to the villa during the seventeenth century starting from that of John Evelyn, focusing on Francesco Scannelli, art expert at the service of Francis I Duke of Modena who stayed at the Villa d’Este of Tivoli in 1654.

The essay intends to focus on the use of the adjective serpentinato in Father Sebastiano Resta’s notes and letters. In a letter sent to Bishop Marchetti and in the manuscript Aggiunta e Supplemento to the first volume of Correggio in Roma there are indeed two variants of the
adjective: serpeggiatura and serpeggiante. These few pages aim to analyse the historical legacy of the adjective in exam, starting from its first attestation in Lomazzo’s Trattato (1584), then passing through Scannelli’s Microcosmo (1657) and finally in Malvasia’s Felsina (1678). The Oratorian read and studied extensively these books indeed. Therefore, a common thought emerges between Scannelli, Malvasia and Father Resta in using the adjective to describe elements of Emilian painting: indeed, the cases presented here involve masterpieces by Correggio, Parmigianino and Nicolò dell’Abate.

In his book "Il Microcosmo della Pittura", Francesco Scannelli mentioned several prints reproducing masterpieces. This contribution aim to understand if Scannelli had a print collection of his own, and which prints he knew or had. Scannelli mentioned the predella of Ercole de' Roberti in the church of San Giovanni in Monte in Bologna; the frescoes by Andrea del Sarto in the Scalzo cloister in Florence; The Martyrdom of St. Lawrence by Titian reproduced by Cornelis Cort; the decoration of the tower of the Dillingen castle by Livio Agresti; The Crucifixion by Tintoretto reproduced by Agostino Carracci; the Alms of San Rocco by Annibale Carracci, reproduced by Francesco Brizio and finally The escape of Aeneas from Troy by Federico Barocci, reproduced by Agostino Carracci.
The essay discusses the case of the exhibition "Raffaello, Correggio, Caravaggio. Un'esperienza tattile. Sulle orme di Scannelli, Zagarolo, Palazzo Rospigliosi”: the role of the team of art historians, the process of the 3D printing and the successful tour of the exhibition in schools and museums.
Following the chronology of the documentary attestations, the various paintings attributed to Leonardo da Vinci during the seventeenth century and discussed in the essays are listed were. In addition to the inventory attestations, relating to the Barberini and Medici collections, the reports made by some historians are taken into consideration seventeenth-century, as in the case of Francesco Scannelli in reference to the Aldobrandini and Borghese collections in Rome and to the Estensi gallery in Modena, or as in the case of Filippo Titi, regarding the lunette preserved inside the convent of Sant'Onofrio al Gianicolo in Rome. As a testimony to the evergrowing fame, between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, of Leonardo's attributed and believed works, this atlas includes some prints and the copious Resta’s material collected.

The essay aims to bring new light on the study done on Leonardo da Vinci, from the art expert for the duke of Modena, Francesco Scannelli on his Microcosmo della pittura, printed in 1657. Guido Reni, Francesco Albani and Guercino had an important and significant role in the training of Scannelli and in his comprehension of Leonardo’s precepts. During the time that Scannelli spent in Rome (1654 and 1655) he knew Cassi-ano dal Pozzo, who had an important role in the publication of Leonardo da Vinci’s Trattato in 1651 by Raphaël Trichet du Fresne. During his journey through Italy, Scannelli discovered paintings believed to be Leonardo’s in Milan (Last Supper and the Virgin of the Rocks), in Florence (Fall of Phaeton, lost), in Modena (not identified and hardly autographed) and in Rome (paintings made by Leonardo’s student).

Books by Eliana Monaca
