31 hours

change

I'm sorry for disturbing you, but I have a question. Why is the first block always 31 hours? It seems like a strange number when it comes to lengths of time. 🪐 Haumeon the Adventurer 🪐 03:42, 3 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

w:Wikipedia:Administrators'_guide/Blocking#When_to_block says that 31 hours is the standard, and due to WP:FOLLOW it is also adopted in this project. The enwiki documentation says that 24 hour blocks are used for WP:3RR, and I guess that 31 hours comes from a number between 24 and 48. However, I'm not sure where 31 has come. I'm also an admin at Simple English Wiktionary and the English Wikiversity, but their blocks start from 24 hours. Maybe 31 is not a global standard. Asking at WP:ST may be helpful. I hope this can help you. MathXplore (talk) 03:56, 3 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
(Note) The enwiki 31 hour standard is written since w:special:diff/689598380. MathXplore (talk) 04:01, 3 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
(talk page stalker) @Haumeon: I think the idea is that the vandal might be editing at the same time each day. If you catch them vandalizing at, for example, 3 pm and you block them for 31 hours, you've stopped their editing for that day and possibly for the next day, too. It can keep them from getting into the habit of messing with Wikipedia at the same time every day. However, I don't know how effective it is at that. -- Auntof6 (talk) 05:33, 3 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for the feedback. MathXplore (talk) 05:34, 3 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
It does make sense now that I think about it. If the user edits at 3 PM on the first day, then on the third they would have to wait for 10PM. If anything, it would take some dedication for a vandal to edit at night. 🪐 Haumeon the Adventurer 🪐 05:40, 3 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Patrolling pages

change

Hi Math! I have a question about patrolling pages. Do we only mark pages in the mainspace (articles, templates, modules e.t.c) as patrolled, or do we also patrol pages in the user space (userpages, wikiprojects, e.t.c)? – Cyber.Eyes.2005Talk 14:25, 6 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

In general we are expected to check all pages wherever the namespace is. For user pages, we need to check them to halt linkspams, self-ads, and impersonations. I think we were currently discussing when to mark articles as patrolled (but I forgot the discussion venue). I don't remember discussions about when to patrol other types of pages. When you are not sure if the page needs to be patrolled, don't do anything. As same as any other permissions, persistent misuse will easily lead to rights removal. MathXplore (talk) 02:33, 7 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Please also note that in the context of MediaWiki, "mainspace" only means articles (w:Wikipedia:What_is_an_article?#Namespace). Please avoid using the term in completely different meanings. MathXplore (talk) 02:35, 7 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for the detailed reply. I’ll focus on patrolling only "articles" in the namespace for now. The reason I used the term "mainspace" (which includes articles, templates, modules, etc.) was to clarify if those also need to be marked as patrolled. I'd appreciate it if you could provide the link to the discussion once you find it. Thanks again. – Cyber.Eyes.2005Talk 06:09, 7 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
(talk page stalker) I don't think "mainspace" includes anything but articles. -- Auntof6 (talk) 06:13, 7 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for clarifying. – Cyber.Eyes.2005Talk 07:20, 7 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
I think User:Auntof6/Things_I_would_like_Wikipedia_editors_to_know#How_to_patrol is also helpful for you. MathXplore (talk) 07:10, 7 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
