South17 is an artist space located on Route 17 in York, Alabama. Our primary mission is to build an alternative marketplace for the creative talent in rural communities located along the western corridor of Alabama. From the Tennessee border to the Gulf Coast and adjoining regions.

South17 is a community-based entrepreneurial project. With marketing and sales at its core, it will also function as a resource and development center, supporting original ideas from conceptualization to realization.

Selected artists and makers will have full access to studio space, materials, supplies and equipment as well as an open forum with other members of the South17 artist community who may provide valuable exchanges, collaborations, and mentoring.

South17 welcomes the participation of visual artists, craftspeople and makers of every kind including furniture builders, fashion and jewelry designers, musicians, and health, beauty and food artisans.

Conceived by Garland Farwell under the basic premise that creative hubs and artist cooperatives have the potential to attract interest and opportunities that are typically inaccessible to solitary rural artists, South17 will help provide access to broader global platforms.
