Price of Life third Nucleon guardian.jpg
The Nucleon guardians are a trio of unfortunate souls from the Marvel portion of the Generation 1 continuity family.

The "Nucleon guardians" were once normal Hydrusian mechanoids, albeit ones stricken by grave ailments. But there was hope for them. A new substance was discovered on the island of Farooth, which was said to be capable of healing any robot lifeform. This substance was christened Nucleon, and the three robots would be the first patients of the medi-center erected on the island.

As things went, the unreliable Nucleon did secure their life, but only to prolong and intensify their suffering. Two of the trio went mad because of it and slaughtered their doctors. Then the three together sealed off the island, so that no one else could get to the Nucleon. Contrary to the story that spread, this was not to keep the substance for themselves. Rather, they wanted to prevent others from sharing their gruesome fate, even if it meant killing them.

"Are you John Connor?"

When Grimlock learnt of the miracle substance Nucleon, he packed the bodies of his deactivated team and left for Hydrus Four. There he hired a local to be his guide and "followed" him to the coast from where he could travel to Farooth. At the shore, Grimlock spotted one of the three guardians floating above the sea's surface, but failed to keep his guide from betraying their presence. The guardian attacked them, chasing off the guide but underestimating Grimlock's warrior mindset. While Grimlock was confused by its repetition of "None must feed", "None must pass" and "Defend the well", he didn't bother about it and fought back until he tried to swing the mechanoid away but instead ended up ripping its decaying leg off. Taken aback, Grimlock finished his opponent off, noting he was acting less like a warrior and more like a surgeon cutting away diseased tissue.

Grimlock collected his teammates on a small boat to Farooth. During the trip, he wondered about the creature's intentions, realizing that aside from madness, the creature appeared to having been acting out of desperation and fear. Unsure what this meant for the revival-by-Nucleon he intended for the Dinobots, he got little time to ponder over it when another of the guardians shot out of the sea. Muttering the same lines as the previous guy, this one pulled Grimlock off his boat to attack him subsurface. Having learnt from the previous encounter, Grimlock managed to destroy him, though it bothered him greatly that he still didn't understand why it had to come that far.

On the island itself, Grimlock met the last of the three guardians and enquired if he was looking for a fight too. The guardian replied that he merely intended to warn about the Nucleon. Finally giving Grimlock the answers to the questions that had accumulated during the trip to Farooth, the guardian explained that Nucleon cures and grants power, but that it affects no type of mechanoid the same way and has a tendency to come with too high a price. In his case, he was revived after having succumbed to a disease that slowly ate away at his circuits, only to be forced to wait for another death much more intense. Being handed a few more examples of what could happen to the Dinobots if he revived them with Nucleon, Grimlock decided to test the substance on himself first. It made him "feel great", as he put it. The guardian solemnly replied that time would tell. The Pri¢e of Life!
