Here comes a special boy!

Philippe Bowen is as talented with words as he is with the explosives that are his stock in trade. Well-spoken and well-read with an apparent fondness for that wonderful new genre known as "science fiction", there seems to be a bit more to this demolitions expert than he lets on. He's seen and done a few strange things in his time, but when asked about his familiarity with the fantastic, the most he'll ever coyly reply is that he's "been around".

Bowen is a member of the First Seven, the group who would eventually found the covert government organization Sector Seven.

Fiction

IDW Publishing comics

Bowen impressed Walter Simmons when they worked together in Burma at some point before 1898, so Simmons knew that he had a good man on his team when Billy North recruited Bowen to join their expedition to the Arctic to investigate Archibald Witwicky's claims of a frozen metal man. When these claims proved true, Bowen calmly sat and read The War of the Worlds while metallurgist Jack Arden examined the giant creature, grousing to Bowen about the attitudes of their comrades and the general situation all the while. Eventually, Arden was forced to conclude that he did not recognize the metal, and unfortunately, without this knowledge, geologist Theodore Grant could not tell Bowen where to place the explosive that would free the titan from the ice. Bowen's demolition skills were soon put to a different use when another of the metal man's kind arrived and attacked them; following the directions of Grant and Reginald Danco, Bowen used his explosives to blow the ice sheet out from underneath the second robot, sending it to a watery grave. Unfortunately, Agent North did not survive the altercation, but Bowen vowed to stay by Simmons's side as they continued their endeavour to learn more about these robots and defend the Earth against them (although he looked at it a bit more logically, thinking more in terms of manpower rather than the revenge the others were contemplating). Notes

  • Sector 7 author John Barber designed the First Seven to represent disparate parts of the era their story takes place in. In his own words, Bowen is basically "Oscar Wilde as an explosives expert".
