Charles Horman was an American journalist and documentary filmmaker who discovered evidence of U.S. involvement in the events leading up to the overthrow of the socialist government of Chilean leader Salvador Allende. On September 19, 1973, he was executed in the Estadio Nacional in Santiago de Chile by the Chilean military with the support and assistance of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and the U.S. State Department.

Born on May 15, 1942 in New York City, Charles graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire and later from Harvard University. Working as filmmaker at KING-TV in Portland, Oregon, Charles created the short documentary "Napalm," which won a Grand Prize at the Cracow Film Festival in 1967. He wrote articles as an investigative journalist for various magazines and newspapers. Charles protested against the Vietnam War at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, and was honorably discharged from the Air National Guard in 1969. Charles met Joyce Marie Hamren while both were visiting Europe in 1964. They were married four years later. In December 1971, Charles and Joyce embarked on a journey that eventually led them to Chile. They settled in Santiago, where Charles undertook various projects including the production of an animated film for children in conjunction with Chilean friends. He also collaborated with Pueblo Films and wrote the script for a documentary film on the social and economic history of Chile. In early 1973, Charles began editing and publishing a small non-profit news magazine, Fuente de Información Norteamericana (FIN), that focused on social and political issues.

On September 17, 1973, six days after the U.S.-backed military takeover, Charles was kidnapped by CIA agent Ray Davis and the Chilean military and taken to the Estadio Nacional, which had been turned into a make-shift concentration camp. There he was interrogated, tortured and later executed on the orders of Pedro Espinoza. A second American journalist, Frank Terrugi, was killed in the same way. One month later, Charles' body was found in a morgue in the Chilean capital. The murders of Horman and Terrugi were later dramatized in the 1982 film Missing.

People really love to cynically abuse that whole "old dead white men" line don't they. Like there is a very genuine issue with how various systems of oppression (racism, misogyny etc.) mean that thinkers from privileged backgrounds got a disproportionate amount of attention and praise compared to those from a more marginalised position, with the theoretically contributions of the latter getting frequently mis-attributed or outright ignored. It doesn't mean that the contributions from said privileged thinkers are all inherently worthless on that basis alone.

Like it's a classic example of the way that liberals take structural critiques and turn them into a matter of personal morality. "Overrepresentation of privileged thinkers is bad" gets turned into "Privileged thinkers are all bad people". And it always gets used in the most cynical way possible. You hardly ever see this line used on thorough reactionaries like Nietzsche. It's mainly used to denounce progressive thinkers who, whatever flaws they had and bigotries they were unable to escape, still made innumerable contributions to the causes of liberation and laid the groundwork that was later developed and expanded by marginalised theoreticians. Like people should definitely read more Ho Chi Minh and Amilcar Cabral and Angela Davis, but that doesn't diminish the value of Marx and Lenin.

As important as it is to remind people of the contributions that marginalised people all over the world have made to Marxism (if only because even many Marxists themselves fail to appreciate this*), using it counter the whole "dead white guys" gotcha misses the point of why it's such a stupid thing to say. Because that line is a critique of a system, and it loses all power and meaning when removed from that context applied on the level of individuals. Bigotry is a dialectical structure and not a metaphysical condition; possessing privilege matters in terms of interaction with the broader world not as an ontological fact of your existence. Individuals do matter to some extent, but mainly in terms of how they fit into broader systems and not how systems fit around individuals. You need to realise all this if you want to get anywhere. This individualist bullshit only works as a tool for personal gratification and flagellation; it's masturbatory in the worst possible way

*even if you consciously support an ideology of anti-bigotry, it takes discipline and vigilance to properly unlearn all the biases instilled by life under Imperialist Capitalism and not everyone is successful at applying this

psychotrenny

A lot of responses to all that "Marxism is a white ideology" nonsense seem to be missing why that's such a ridiculous thing to say. Like sure this point it incorrect on its own terms because currently a significant majority of the world's Marxists are not white, but these terms themselves are also useless. The fundamental problem here is that the racial character of an ideology's support base means little by itself, detached from all context.

Like there are plenty of explicitly White Supremacist ideologies that manage to gain significant numbers of Non-White collaborators, assimilationists and modified offshoots, but it would be absurd to argue that this fact alone negates their racialist aspects. And there was a point in time when the vast majority of the world's Marxist were indeed White. This isn't because of any inherent feature of the ideology itself, but because of how it was generated through the socio-economic conditions and ideological milieu of Industrial Capitalism which first reached an advanced stage in Western Europe. Western Europe was also the part of the world where White Supremacy, and indeed the specific concept of "Race" and "Whiteness" as we know it today, was developed as a way to justify all the Colonialist atrocities committed to enrich the region to this stage of development.

But while Racism was an ideological construct developed to reinforce brutal inequalities of the society that spawned it, Marxism offers tools to critique and destroy them. As Western Europe's economic influence spread and became ever more materially dominant over the Colonised peoples of the world, West European ideological constructs became relevant and meaningful all over the world. Western-style Racism became a useful tool for all manner of reactionary forces; taking the idea of some biological or spiritual hierarchy and changing around what groups fit into which position in order to suit their current needs, sometimes using pre-colonial prejudices and fitting them into this new mould and other times fabricating entirely novel bigotries. Meanwhile progressives forces use Marxism to understand the oppression they were subjected to on a structural level. This allows them to scientifically formulate an effective strategy of resistance and therefore makes Marxism a tool of liberation for billions of people all over the planet. So while Marxism might be a product of Western Europe, it has no metaphysical ties to the place or to its people. Those who first pioneered it may be those classified as "white" but it is not an inherently "white ideology"

And we need to understand this because Racism is very significant contradiction in contemporary Capitalism. It's a force that inflicts untold suffering, directly maintaining the subjugation and exploitation of billions of people worldwide while being heavily interwoven with other oppressive structures like Capitalist Patriarchy and (current the most important contradiction of them all) Imperialism. So the relationship that an ideology has to race and racial oppression is a very important subject matter. But to properly analyse this relationship you need to consider the context, thinking in terms how it actually interacts with broader social structures. You won't reach any useful conclusions doing a vulgar headcount of how many adherents have what skin colour.

thewebcomicsreview

Bob and George is a comic that ran from 2000 to 2007. The author, David Anez, has set a plan to start doing a comic, but wasn’t able to acquire a scanner before his self-imposed deadline. In order to kill time, his first ever strip was a filler comic, which normally a pretty bad sign. Not having the ability to put art into a computer, he used a sprite from Mega Man 7, floating in an empty void.

image

Thus began what is arguably the most influential webcomic of all time.

Bob and George invented the concept of using game sprites as “art” in a comic strip, an idea often wrongly credited to 8-Bit Theater. And while “First sprite comic” is sufficient to get Bob and George into the webcomic history books all by itself, it was a pioneer in many other ways as well.

image

Some of these ideas were small, like adding a 4-Koma style title to every single strip, now a nearly ubiquitous practice. Bob and George wasn’t the first to do this (Sinfest beat it by a few months, and possibly so too did other comics lost to history), but it was the one that popularized it.

image

Some ideas were bigger, like these animated updates with sound. These had voice acting instead of being music videos, but a few other comics would go on to experiment with these [S] pages.Speaking of which

image

One of the many ideas Bob and George had that would become facepalm-worthy cliches later is the idea of the comic’s author actually showing up and being a character in a weird fourth-wall-breaky way that was also part of the plot.

image

As were alternate versions of the characters from other timelines

image

The world of the comic being disrupted by the metanarrative

image

And even the author being sexually creepy towards a character in his own comic.

image

You see where I’m going with this, I’m sure

Anyway, parts of Bob and George have aged rather poorly (gosh and golly, there are a lot more gay jokes than I remembered), but it was staggeringly important and has kind of faded into the mists of history.

image

With over 80 comics by various creators hosted on the Bob and George site itself, B and G may have more clones and direct influences than even Penny Arcade

image

Not to mention the entire concept of “Sprite comics”.

It’s worth a read as a piece of Webcomic History!
