The transition to a circular economy on a regional scale: A case study on the Buiksloterham area in the Netherlands
    (2024-07-03) Crooijmans, Joris
Within the study, document analysis, qualitative observations and semi-structured interviews are used to obtain data. Through these data, it should become clear how the circular transition in the Buiksloterham area has worked out by looking at the main achievements and biggest challenges in terms of the social, natural and spatial factors. By looking at the Buiksloterham area through the single case study, the ultimate goal is to see how other regional circular economy initiatives can derive insights from the practices and initiatives implemented in the Buiksloterham area, and what specific strategies can be employed to facilitate the spread and adoption of these practices. The research has shown that, unlike in many other trajectories, the social dimension in particular has not been underemphasized in the Buiksloterham area and that there is a strong focus on involving the local community to achieve innovative developments in circular practices. In addition, interventions in the area of policy and regulation within spatial planning have proven to be of great importance to actually get circular practices through and has acted as a stick to actually drop the focus on circularity, which has been stimulating in terms of knowledge generation in the field of circularity.

Urban housing nexus: assessing contractual approaches for affordability, availability and quality in residential real estate development
    (2024-07-07) Keulen, Bas
Within this study, research was conducted into the question: "To what extent do contract forms within real estate development influence the availability, affordability and quality of homes on the local housing market in Belgian and Dutch Limburg?". More specifically, the case cities of Hasselt, Zonhoven, Maastricht and Venray were studied. In order to answer the main question, various sub-questions were formulated. For example, an answer is given to the current state of affairs on the housing market, with research into political, legal and economic factors that influence the affordability, availability and quality of homes. Research was also conducted into the current real estate development process within the cities, as well as the contract forms that are used within the case cities. The focus here is on four case projects: Parkwijk (Hasselt), Agnetenpark (Peer), Sphinxkwartier (Maastricht) and Annahaege (Venray). A qualitative method was used to answer the questions. Semi-structured interviews based on post-positivist epistemology were used. A first general conclusion focuses on the fact that contract forms do indeed influence the availability, affordability and quality of housing on the local housing market, each in their own way. This is due, among other things, to mutual trust, common goals and agendas that the actors involved adopt.

Creating career prospects for university graduates through the reformation of the informal sector in Ghana to achieve decent work for all. A case study of graduates working in the informal sector within the Kumasi Metropolis
    (2024-08-01) Addo, Francisca B.
Africa has always been at the centre of developmental controversies by international organizations. Many theories and recommendations have been thrown to the region to solve its never-ending developmental dilemma. One of the reoccurring issues in the continent is the structure of informal economies and its impact on economic growth. As iterated by Koto (2015), the informal sector accounts for a large portion of most developing countries' economic activities—outside the purview of regulated economic activity. The informal sector is a labour economy encompassing of economic activities that operate without state regulations and protection. It is noted to have many opportunities and quite lucrative if ventured into it. With the increasing rate of graduate unemployment in Ghana and the inability of the formal sector (both private and public) to employ most university graduates, the informal sector can be considered as one of the labour entities to help solve this canker. However, it has issues of its own, that is the negative perceptions attached to it (a place for the uneducated) and less accessibility to financial resources which affects the income earned by the individuals working in this sector. Therefore, this study aimed at understanding how the informal sector can contribute to reducing graduate unemployment if reformed. This is because, it is believed that the informal sector has many career opportunities for individuals including university graduates.

The commons in conflict: Analyzing settled-pastoral conflict in Northern CAR through Common Pool Resource Theory
    (2024-06-13) Coustets, Shaun
The Central African Republic (CAR) remains in conflict 11 years, which has uprooted established dynamics between communities, notably between settled and pastoral groups. This research investigates the conflict dynamics between these two groups in Ouham-Pendé, utilizing Elinor Ostrom’s theories on Common Pool Resources (CPR’s) as a theoretical framework. Ostrom’s eight Institutional Design Principles (IDPs) serve as a lens to analyze common governance structures and their impact on settled-pastoral conflict, drawing on data collected through questionnaires during an internship at Concordis International. The research compared the findings of the CPR analysis against theories in academia on relevant conflicts. The analysis supports inclusive and locally built institutions in CAR, increasing pastoral representation and disagrees with narratives which paint pastoralists as inherently uncooperative. The findings also add an economic dimension to an established political analysis of Chadian pastoralists’ presence in the region. By applying the IDP framework this study offers a multifaceted understanding of the conflict in CAR, what norms are expected between actors and which institutions are vital for cooperation. This creates opportunities for targeted peacebuilding initiatives. Furthermore, this thesis supports the novel application of CPR in analyzing conflict, and contribute to the understanding of challenges faced by CPRs in conflict settings.
