ABOUT THE JOB

Location: Toronto or remote (anywhere in Canada)

The Walrus provokes new thinking and sparks conversation on matters vital to Canadians. As a registered charity, we publish independent, fact-based journalism and produce national, ideas-focused events.

We are currently accepting applications for a Designer. The Walrus art department is a team of multifaceted designers who work closely together to produce exceptional creative outcomes across digital, social, print, and experiential channels. The designer will also work with members of the editorial, marketing and digital departments to produce high-quality designs that are clear, creative, and consistent with our brand guidelines.

The successful candidate will be integral to the success of the fast-paced production process, a dynamic marketing environment, and will bring innovative ideas to multimedia story content. They should also have a strong design aesthetic and the technical skills to turn digital marketing and communication strategies into beautifully designed assets that strengthen The Walrus brand. This position reports to the design director.

Responsibilities

  • Design marketing materials for web, social media, and print (including newsletters, interactive social content, static and animated ads, email campaigns, event signage, direct mail campaigns and other multi-channel marketing initiatives)
  • Create photo illustrations from stock photography for editorial content
  • Produce designs and wireframes for websites/microsites for special editorial and brand projects (requires knowledge of foundational UX/UI principles)
  • Assist with the magazine’s print production process
  • Design story layouts for the magazine (requires strong skills in typography, colour theory, hierarchy and composition)

Qualifications

  • Two to three years of experience in an editorial/agency environment
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Figma)
  • Familiarity with WordPress and basic HTML markup, or a willingness to learn
  • Familiarity with social media best practices; digital marketing experience is an asset)
  • Knowledge of print production requirements and process
  • Familiarity with animation softwares (AfterEffects, Animate) is an asset
  • Familiarity with The Walrus mandate is an asset
  • Strong work ethic, excellent communication skills (spoken and written), and a collaborative team player
  • Ability to work with remote colleagues across the country
  • Ability to take ownership and pride in your work, from project brief to final execution
  • Interest in current affairs and the news cycle

Compensation and Benefits

The compensation package includes a competitive base salary of $55-$57,000 with a full benefits package consisting of medical, mental health, dental, vision, prescription, employee and family assistance program, and paid vacation. We also have half-day summer Fridays and a week off over the winter holiday break. The Walrus supports flexible, hybrid work, including a collaborative, open office environment in downtown east Toronto. A laptop will be provided, along with a free subscription to the print or digital edition of The Walrus, and a deeply discounted rate for family and friends.
