Another one bites the dust. Google has announced that it will discontinue its Stack PDF Scanner app on September 23, 2024. The company is urging users to switch to Google Drive's built-in document scanning features instead.
Stack, developed by Google's Area 120 incubator team, allowed users to scan and organise documents and receipts on their mobile devices.
The app offered convenient features like automatic edge detection, document capture, and smart categorization.
Google has already removed Stack from the Play Store. Users who still have the app installed can export their scanned documents to Google Drive before the September shutdown date.
To transfer all documents from Stack to Drive, users should:
1. Open the Stack app
2. Go to Account > Settings > Export all documents to Drive
3. Tap Export to confirm
Exported documents will appear in a green folder labelled "Stack" within Google Drive.
Google Drive now includes similar document scanning capabilities that were previously unique to Stack. In November, Google updated Drive's mobile apps with a dedicated "Scan" button and redesigned scanning interface. The new scanning tool in Drive offers features like:
- Auto-capture mode
- Crop and rotate options
- Filters
- Multi-page PDF creation
- AI-powered title suggestions
While Drive lacks some of Stack's organisational features, like a dedicated home screen for scanned documents, Google believes it provides a suitable replacement for most users' needs.
Users are advised to export their Stack documents to Google Drive well before the September 23 cutoff date to ensure they retain access to all their scanned files and information.
