one of the houses I walk past on my evening dog walk route has 3 (possibly 4) Bernese mountain dogs and 1 golden retriever. All of them are insanely dog reactive and lose their minds scream-barking and slamming themselves into the windows whenever we walk past. And the people ARE HOME while they do it, like lights on, tv on, cars in the driveway. damn bitch you live like this

eternally thinking about your reddit post where you were like 'will my dogs bangs grow back?' and everyone who had ever even thought about grooming jumped in to inform you it was in fact your fault for not telling the groomer not to trim them and also that your amusement with an inoffensive part of your dogs hair growth was wrong and a little evil. Reddit is a website.

IT WAS SOOOO WEIRD the amount of like, genuine contempt a lot of ppl had was so bizarre to me. especially bc i'm subbed there so i see a lot of posts and they normally love the little silly/unconventional haircuts but for some reason everyone that day decided that i needed to be taught A Lesson ig. jokes on them the bangs are here to stay babey

(i did have a couple ppl dm me and basically apologize on behalf of the community but like. what a ride.)

aughh work been kicking my ass lately i'm late on keps report card

Leash Walking: 🟢/🟡 very pully on a harness, only a bit pully on a martingale.

Manners - People: 🟡 Jumping On You Jumping On You Jumping On You Jumping On You

Manners - Dogs: 🟢 very sociable but also listens to corrections without taking it personally

Manners - Home: 🟢/🟡 demoting him from green here because most of the time he's good but then sometimes he'll randomly decide to chew on a door or unpack an entire vacuum cleaner out of the box.

Manners - Public Spaces: 🟢 very eager to go places but doesn't get worked up beyond control. god it's nice to have a dog i can take places without barking the whole time.

Grooming: 🟡 has gotten a bit better about brushing but a bit worse about nail trims

Recall: 🟡 good unless he's distracted, but that's as expected for his age

Crating: 🟢 still good, has gotten up to an hour un-crated without a problem so hoping to keep building that up

Fear/Anxiety: 🟢 no issues this month

Volume: 🟢 would like if we didnt insist on barking at everyone who walked past the yard but otherwise he's great (by collie standards)

Puberty: 🟢 he's gotten very active in the Piss fandom lately. lifts his leg most of the time and pees about every 10 feet on walks, but he's not doing it in the house and he's not humping (has def thought about it but has listened when i warned him) so no complaints.

all in all doing good! just normal energetic teenage puppy things. we start CGC prep classes next weekend so i'm interested to see if that helps make a difference in some of his manners, but regardless it will be good practice for him.

so when he was pre puberty, you described kep as highly attentive and biddable in regards to training. has he changed now that the hormones hit? has he gotten more annoying in regards to chasing small animals, including our merciful queen butters? sending lots of love

he's definitely had some changes haha but i do think he is still mostly the same dog. he is still very interested in training and very attentive and willing to work - but it's just harder to get him to that state, because he has Teenage Boy brain and gets distracted a lot easier. he's great in our obedience classes, for example, because he is getting 100% of my focus and i have someone guiding me along. but in more casual settings - out on walks, or at home - he's a lot more spacey and impulsive, and i have to work a lot harder to draw his attention off of whatever he's looking at and back onto me. once i have it, he's really good - it's just the first step. but he's a really good worker! he's a lot more confident and more tolerant of drilling than stellina was (and his first instinct is not to Shout At Everything, which is so nice). we can do reps of tasks over and over without him disengaging or getting discouraged. like, i posted a few days ago a gif of him going down a playground slide and slipping and eating shit - for stellina, that would have been the end of the session, fuck that slide, i'm leaving. but kep i was able to encourage him and though he was a bit hesitant, he tried it again and then was fine and kept doing it when asked. i really appreciate that about his character!

he has gotten more insistent on chasing squirrels/deer/rabbits/etc, which is annoying since its now fall and the squirrels are getting more active. he's still good about cats though! butters gives him a smack once a week or so to keep him on his toes, but he doesn't take it personally.
