Analysing the concept of conspiracy in the Spanish monarchy during
the first decades of the 19th century, the article emphasises that the obsession for conspiracy theories was far from being an exclusive concern of conservatives and reactionaries at the time. Especially during the profound crisis of the Spanish monarchy in the Liberal Triennium (1820-1823), conspiracies helped to sharpen clashes and political conflicts between constitutionalists and legitimists. In a broader European perspective, the spreading around the world of Cadiz constitutionalism elicited a real transnational discourse about conspiracy theories. This phenomenon calls for new research about the secret societies in a comparative and transnational perspective.

This article proposes a reassessment of the Spanish Restoration through a study of its connections with, and departures from, European post-war strategies. Dominating accounts focus on two intertwined narratives: the definitive displacement of Spain from the category of great power, and the political involution of King Ferdinand VII’s reactionary monarchy. These aspects were highlighted by numerous contemporaries and have been considered by most historians, yet they would benefit from a reappraisal that is comparative and considers transnational entanglements. This article addresses whether the character of the Spanish Restoration differed from the processes that were experimented in other parts of Europe and, if so, what the consequences of its particular situation were both for Spain and the international order.

This article explores the troubled relationship of the court of King Ferdinand vii with international public opinion. Spanish diplomats in northern Europe aimed to challenge negative news about Spain published across the European press, which was mostly in favour of the Spanish liberal cause. While formally repudiating the concept of public opinion, the Spanish monarchy was forced not only to acknowledge its existence, but also the necessity of intervening in it, turning public opinion into a battlefield where international reputation was at stake. Concern about «abuses» of the freedom of the press was shared by other regimes of the Restoration, such as the German Confederation, which adopted instruments of control over the press in 1819 in order to limit the spread of liberalism.

This bibliographical essay seeks to evaluate the impact that the
historiographical trend known as Atlantic history, which emerged in the Anglo-Saxon academia, has had on the Spanish-American one. It also considers the criticisms and reticence that it has triggered. The analysis focuses on the applicability and relevance as an analytical tool for the Spanish case of the concept of Atlantic revolutions. It also wants to assess the benefits that geographically broad approaches —even beyond the Atlantic— present to nineteenth-century Spanish historiography.
