The Wagner-Hebb polarization technique, usually applied to solids, has been employed to measure electronic conductivity in molten KCL. Steady-state currents were measured at various applied voltages for the cell Ta(s) / KCl(l) / K-Bi(l). Results showed the electronic conductivity to be proportional to the activity of K in KCl at temperatures between 800 and 860°C and for activities of potassium

The Sheffield low-level radioactive waste disposal site, which ceased operation in 1978, has been the focus of modeling efforts by the NRC for the purpose of predicting long-term site behavior. To provide the NRC with the information required for its modeling effort, a study to define the source term for tritium in eight trenches at the Sheffield site has been
The entropy of a material obeying a Mie-Grüneisen equation of state and a Debye specific heat is obtained in closed form. Expressions for temperature, isothermal compression, and adiabatic compression are also deduced.

In this paper a model of the processes involved in multispectral remote sensing and data classification is developed as a tool for designing and evaluating smart sensors. The model has both stochastic and deterministic elements and accounts for solar radiation, atmospheric radiative transfer, surface reflectance, sensor spectral reponses, and classification algorithms. Preliminary results are presented which indicate the validity and

A computational model of the processes involved in multispectral remote sensing and data classification is developed as a tool for designing smart sensors which can process, edit, and classify the data that they acquire. An evaluation of sensor system performance and design tradeoffs involves classification rates and errors as a function of number and location of spectral channels, radiometric sensitivity

Understanding the exchanges of carbon between the atmosphere and ocean and the fate of carbon delivered to the deep sea is fundamental to the evaluation of ocean carbon sequestration options. An additional key requirement is that sequestration must be verifiable and that environmental effects be monitored and minimized. These needs can be addressed by carbon system observations made from low-cost autonomous ocean-profiling floats and gliders. We have developed a prototype ocean carbon system profiler based on the Sounding Oceanographic Lagrangian Observer (SOLO; Davis et al., 1999). The SOLO/ carbon profiler will measure the two biomass components of the carbon system and their relationship to physical variables, such as upper ocean stratification and mixing. The autonomous observations within the upper 1500 m will be made on daily time scales for periods of months to seasons and will be carried out in biologically dynamic locations in the world's oceans that are difficult to ac...

The autonomous ocean profiler is a vertically cycling instrument for gathering ocean profile data over long periods of time and relaying it through the Argos satellite system which also locates the buoys. The objective of the present program is to develop a profiler capable of reporting sound speed profiles with an accuracy of 0.25 m/s over many months of operation and order 50 cycles. It is based on the ALACE float which is an uninstrumented float used to measure subsurface currents through observed displacement between successive surfacing.

Affordable platforms underpin our ability to make sustained in situ observations of the ocean. Autonomous vehicles, such as drifting and profiling floats, already complement research, survey and voluntary ships. Floats are but one, more mature, member of what can be considered a family of autonomous platforms. The more recent additions to the family include moored profilers, autonomous surface craft, gliders and propelled autonomous underwater vehicles. Research communities of scientists and technologists are rapidly gaining experience of these newer vehicles, building on the proven attributes of today's technology. This experience will provide a firm foundation for the introduction of new platforms into the arena of sustained observations.

During this period, activity focused on three tasks: continued testing and improvement of the basic ALACE float which will do the profiling; preliminary selection of an appropriate set of sensors from which at least sound speed profiles can be determined; development of an improved controller to handle the data stream. Keywords: Oceanographic/Acoustic equipment; Autonomous Lagrangian Circulation Explorer (ALACE) float; Autonomous measuring systems, Oceanographic measurements; Oceanographic data acquisition.
