Understanding "institutionalization" as the social process of construction , affirmation and legitimation of an authority that justifies itself as imperative , we aim to offer a theoretical approach to how some Rusian clergymen legitimized themselves and the Church between the XI and XII centuries, focused on the attempts to control the privilege to determine what is sacred. By admitting that the Church as an institution is historicized, that is, permeated by human relations, and approaching two examples-anti-Latin literature and the Klim Smolyatich controversy, we believe that what was perceived as attacks based on unofficial conceptions or order was interpreted a challenge to the churchly authority and, by the same token, forced clergymen to think about the nature of what they considered sacred.

Abstract: We propose on the following article a rhetorical reading of the epistolary response from the metropolitan John II of Kiev (c. 1076-1089) to "antipope" Clement III (1080-1100). With the message expressing the metropolitan's concern over the supposed deviant practices of the Latin rite's followers, the document is often considered by the historiography as a Byzantine affront to an alleged tentative of unification between the Rus and the Imperial Churches. We argue that the ecclesiastic leader of Kiev legitimates his own Church, which keeps a crystalized sacred, when dessacralizing the Latin faith community, the latter which insists in tampering with the tradition. We call "anecclesing" this process of affirmation of an ecclesiastic community through the negation of another Church's prerogatives of determining the sacred.

In the following article, we aim to examine the meaning of a Rusian church (understood by us here as the community of Christian faith rather than the sacerdotal body) according to Serapion, bishop of Vladimir during the 13th century. The prelate wrote several sermons during his life, five of which managed to survive until the present times, and all being about catastrophes that happened to Rus by the Rusians’ own fault. By the source’s nature and rhetoric, it is possible to identify ecclesiological elements that, in Serapion’s mind, would constitute the idea of a community of faith that was attacked and severely damaged. The practices of the members that were responsible for said destruction, therefore, are practices against the “institutionalized sacred” that binds the entire community.

The so-called «Great Schism» of 1054 was responsible for the increased production of writings against the Latin faith and practices in the lands that followed the Constantinopolitan Patriarchate, especially in Kievan Rus where most bore the authorship of the metropolitans. This kind of literature, mostly lists enumerating errors, have been discussed in detail by several authors, but little attention has been given to how the lists show a conception of community of faith, which is constructed against the notion of Latin Ecclesia. Therefore, this article aims to analyze how a conception of Church is thought in the polemical writings attributed to two metropolitans of Kiev ‒ Georgy and Ioann II ‒ in a process we’ll call «anecclesing», that is, desacralization of a community of faith and thus revoking its right to be considered a Church.

Two years have passed since its defense, and there are several points that today I disagree with (as well having now a broader bibliographical scope and access) or feel that should've been written better/clearer, but as I plan to publish it in the near future, it will be meticulously revised until there.
