Renata is the Head of Corn Strategy for LATAM and Asia at Bayer Crop Science. She and her team won the Otto Bayer Medal for a treatment to control the billion-dollar corn rootworm. This insect is called the billion-dollar bug because it costs farmers about $1 billion in lost production each year as the larvae feed on corn roots. These insects are very smart and can develop resistance. Renata and her team developed a new way to protect corn roots from these larvae using a completely new technology called RNA interference, or RNAi.
